Pig Models 8,8cm Pzgr. 39 (APCBC) L/56

Post by aur0ra145 »

This right here is a 1/1 scale Tiger I shell model. There are only 4 parts to the kit; but, a lot of sanding was involved to get the seam lines out.

Overall I've primed the projectile in Ultimate Gray and the shell casing in Ultimate Gloss Black. I'm expecting to use AK Xtreme Metal Brass for the shell casing. Projectile with be XF-85 Rubber Black with a XF-2 white tip.

Also snapped a picture of my reloading bench. I thought it was funny that on one side I was making a fake Tiger shell and on the other I was making real 30-06.

Tragedy has struck.

I watched the AK Interactive videos on how to use their Xtreme Metal paints and thought it'd be okay to make pretty quick after painting... Well, it was too quick and peeled off the paint, which is oddly more latex like than anything; but it's an enamel? Weird stuff but it sprays nice.

So, I have to wait for this thing to dry over night to sand and fix it tomorrow. Luckily the projectile came out really well! I first painted the tip X-2 Gloss White. Then I was having real trouble figuring out how to make it. and a thought popped into my head. Use the mini dixie cups I use for paint mixing. So, I cut the bottom off of it and slid it on the tip. Perfect mask! For the black, I just used Ultimate Gloss Black primer. Seems to do the job well!

Bad news on that paint. That would make me a sad panda.
Looks like it's going to turn out all OK though; looking forward to seeing it completed.

I am just not having any luck with this guy. Easily the most humbling kit I've built in a while. Which is insane because it only had 4 parts total. Basically, I've learned that I'm not good at metalic finishes and using a gloss primer with paint on it will peel very easily if you must mask over it. I believe I had this same issue with the MiG-21 I did a few years ago. However, I didn't remember any of those lessons learned working on this one. :bash:

But.... I think it eventually came out very nicely. One of the peeled strips is unnoticeable after I fixed it. The other section of peel is just on the backside of the shell. Hidden from view. :thumb1:

Also, when sanding the peeled section, some of it peeled even more.

It's a good addition to the Man Cave.
