Argh, has anyone else experience this before? Never happened to me.

Was masking my WRC Evo VI in order to do the black window rubbers. I had issues in the past with masking tape pulling off decals even through clear coat (Tamiya TS-13, which I haven't gone back to) so this time only used tape on paint areas and used glad wrap/cling film for the rest - pretty standard stuff right? Until I went to remove it and it seemed to stick to the car all over.

The end result was major damage to a key decal, and a few other small bits pulled off, as below.




Also, what appears to be a thin layer of cling film residue has remained in some spots, dulling the clear coat and leaving creases in the finish. I'm hoping most of this can be polished out.

Not too sure what caused this, could be a few things - temperature when painting (wasn't a hot day though), putting on too tight, overspray causing it to be smothered down to the closest surface. I am also wondering if I had would have had the same result if I had left it for another hour or two.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm now doubting what order I should be painting the window rubbers in the future as it has been the stage that I have had the most grief thus far.

Never had that precise problem, no, and I use clingfilm quite a lot for masking off large areas, and have never had a reaction like this. And that looks like a complete PITA to clean up/fix too.
From the pics it looks like something sticky was between the decal/clingfilm. My only guess is that that the clear coat wasn't fully cured?
If it was fully cured, then I have no idea and have never seen anything like it before..

That was my next guess too, but the clear coat had been on for at least a week and I haven't done anything with it since putting it on. Same procedure as usual. I think the clingfilm was just on too tight (I would say the tightest I've done it), and I had quite a bit of overspray (rattle can user here) which caused it to stick down. Hmmm

Not sure on next steps to clean it up. May have to order more decals but that's almost as expensive as a new kit. I guess just try clean up everything else first and see where I land

I had the same problem. The gloss coat (mr hobby super clear) which was sprayed in 5 hands, had cured for more than a month, so this was not the problem. I suspect the problem was that I sprayed it from far too long away, as I feared it would pool and leave marks. So, I had an orange peel effect and obviously, didn’t seal the decals correctly. I guess I ruined it for good...

Oh boy I so feel your pain. I guess one option is to weather it instead?

I've almost completed building it anyway and may weather it one day if I learn that skill. I have spare similar decals for a similar model which I may be able to utilise, I was going to custom design that model anyway. Just can't get to it during lock down

Yeah I did, and the clear coat had cured for at least 4-5 days. Exact same process as usual. I think it was just on too tight and there was too much moisture around

Well tidied it up as much as I could and calling this done. Not my best work but good enough considering the circumstances. Lost a fair bit of its shine from the cling film incident but in too deep to repaint.



You might be able to see on the third image the main side decal looks a bit shoddy and is missing the 'New Zealand' bit. I stole a similar decal from the EVO V model which I'm gonna do a custom paint job on eventually. Will definitely be displaying with the other side showing!

Happy with the underside, getting cleaner each build but could really do with an airbrush for some parts. I battled with if I should put the sump guard on and cover up the nice colours, but did in the end for consistency sakes.

I've never seen that before though.

I use a sandwich bag to mask between the taped portions (in other words the larger areas), and never thought to use cling wrap. The cheap Great Value sandwich bags from Walmart work great and are really thin to cut into any shape, plus they're actually cheaper than good cling-wrap. My 0.02.

I think I might try those out next them. They're a bit thicker than cling film I think so can imagine they'd provide better protection. Cheers for the tip

I think you've done a fantastic job of repairing/saving this one. Looks really great, and you can only 'see the joins' if you look really hard. Great job.
