Tamiya 1/24 Toyota Corolla WRC 1997

This will be a side build along with the delta build im doing [something to do whilst paint dries ] The kit is typical Tamiya although not a great deal of parts sprue wise but some nice detail as always. The instructions are typical tamiya and they include pre cut window masks.

Started by giving the lower tub a coat of undercoat then a coat of white.

Did some more work on the floor pan by painting various areas then adding the front/rear suspension along with the exhaust pipe. Forgot to say I have the etch set for this kit too so that is being added as the build asks for it to be added. Next we start on the cabin fittings.

More done on the interior a couple of decals still to add here and there. The main body has been de-seemed and have started putting the dash together.

Not much done today prepped a load of parts and then gave them a grey undercoat. Decanted some TS 26 but need to leave it to degas for about 12 hours

Interiors looking great! What paint is that on the dash? Tamiya always recommend XF-1 I think, which doesn't feel right in most cases - that's a part of modelling I struggle with, knowing when to stray from instructions

Thanks for looking in and your comments as for the dash the instructions called for XF-63 German Grey which I thought would be a little too dark so went with XF-83 Medium Sea Grey. The reason being I remember a lot of cars of Japanese origin having those light grey plastic interiors around that time and just went for a good match. Dont fret too much about trying other colors as you can always remove/spry over if it dont look right.

I agree with what your saying with the white interior and things plonked on top its more a case of weight saving here though as they left out all the sound proofing and carpets for weight saving on the car. With a full set of carpets she would look pretty bog standard I think.

Most rally cars of that period would’ve had a flocked dash to reduce glare and so a flat black would be about right for most things, like Hawk though, I like to go a few shades lighter for interior paints as when it is all boxed in it tends to just disappear if it’s too dark, you can always change the colour if you don’t like it, look at reference photos alongside the instruction call outs and go with what you think is right.

PS great build so far Hawk, but that goes without saying now!

The inner tub is now complete. The body has been sprayed with de-canted TS-26 White paint so the decals will go on tomorrow

Yeah I agree with both of you re the dash. I think in a lot of cases they're right with a flat black but it gets so lost when tucked behind a windscreen, and you lose a lot of the detail. Think I will experiment with a lighter colour next time, and as you say, spray over it if I don't like it.

Looking forward to seeing more progess on this one!

Hi Cris the TS paint when decanted is very much like Zero in consistency and should not need to be thinned further, I did find with the white though that I was starting to get dry spray in places so I added some self leveling thinner and this cured the problem. I was spraying at around 20 PSI .

Looking good Hawk! Just watch out for the green decals that wrap around the rear bumper - they have a reputation of being a bit of a pain!

The glass has had the black banding done and the wheels have had there decals added. The main car body has been decaled made a mess of the rear but hey ho should be ready for clear coating tomorrow.

Decals look great to me, I really like the blue sections which sets it aside from the other Castrol themes a bit.

Love the spare wheel in the boot too
