Hughes 500 Egg-copter

Post by Tankboy76 »

I picked up some egg kits months ago, but was onto other things when the showed up so they stayed on the shelf. I was excited when I saw the SIG, as I was itching for a simpler kit. The kit comes with a figure, which I'm setting aside for now. I like that the theme is a medical helicopter, feels appropriate.

Test fitting to ensure my plan to paint the sub assembly is possible.

Amazing how quick things come tighter when there are only a handful of parts.

Practice with masking.

I decided to mask and paint the stripes on the bird rather than use the decals, as it seemed some of them may leave gaps, and I wasn't interested in a final gloss coat to unify them (as I had removed the masking from the canopy and didn't want to re-apply is. The result looks good from a yard away, but close inspection reveals a lot of overspray where the tape didn't lay flat. Well, the point was to learn about masking something more complicated, and I did, so I'm happy. Some hand painting covered the worst offenders. The small bits were primed and painted quickly with mission models paints.. I just need to clean up the interior of the body to cover some overspray, add red stripes and silver bits to the rotors, and decals then she'll be ready for final assembly.

Looking good! That's a ton of canopy masking.

And complete.

A couple goofs made the build less satisfying than I was hoping, but a quick build was pretty fun and let me try some new things.
