Ok I'm in - I've had this project in the stash for a couple of years and now seems like an eggcellent time to break it out

First up is this...


And here are the bits and pieces


And the instructions


And decals


Since I wanted to have it "in flight" I was a little disappointed there were no crew included so went out and found these from resicast


And the first job was to see if they could be butchered to fit into the cockpit and the answer was... sort of


Mav looks ok, but Goose is not much more than a bit of a blob - with 20/20 hindsight I'd have probably been better off just trying to create something from a ball of putty but anyway tis done and with the canopy in place it'll do...


Talking of the canopy it seems that just being in the same room as CA was enough to fog it up so I've cleaned that up with a trick I found on the interweb involving smearing a small amount of Vaseline and then polishing with cotton buds - again not perfect but good enough for this project once everything is together


That's it for now, next up will be throwing some paint at the cockpit & crew and filling in some more gaps

Did the same with the Phantom so #2 looks like a child’s head but oh well

Thanks for all the eggcellent encouragement lads; I hope I manage to live up to eggspectations and don't cluck this up completely!

Have spent most of today sorting out Mav & Goose and their environs and here's how they finished up


I've also added the lower fuselage and engine pods - this is part way through sorting out the eggcessive seams


I also carried out some minor surgery to the wings, as they come with a loop to allow them to swing but makes painting a challenge so I snipped out a bit which should allow them to just pop on once they're painted up


A little more clean up tomorrow and then we should be good for primer and base coat methinks

Ok so the F-14 is now in the paint shop and has had a coat of Ultimate black followed by Vallejo Model Air Light Gull Grey which has shown up that I need to do a little more work on a couple of seams (plus one that I missed completely!) so that's all been put to one side to dry off properly before I start messing with it again.

So what could I do in the meantime... well in the movie the eggressor aircraft was the top secret MIG-28 which as any Top Gun fan will know was portrayed in the movie by black painted F-5s. And as it happens AFV Club released an F-5 Egg Plane set


This contains two identical aircraft so I'll build them both at the same time - here's one set of parts


And the instructions - just as well I had two planes to play with as I missed that some parts need to be attached to the upper fuselage half before joining the top and bottom together on the first go around (section 4 - the air intakes & jet pipes)


Loads of decals so I'll be using one set of these and raiding the spares for this project


And finally for completeness here are the kit colour schemes from the back of the box


Aside from the slight screw up in attaching parts in the wrong sequence mentioned above there was nothing too strenuous and after a couple of hours of therapeutic chopping and gluing I have the built MEGG-28 reading for filling and sanding


So I'll pull apart the dry fitted parts and spend some time filling and sanding on both aircraft ready for the next stages

Did you encounter a problem with the aircraft's inverted flight tanks? Have you tried a negative G pushover?

Anyways back to the plot, or what's left of it...

Despite my airbrush developing a case of splatterfest (job one for the weekend appears to be a strip down and clean) I got the F14 more or less done paintwise and will start decaling next. Excuse the rough work around the cockpit, that should all sort itself out once the decals are on and the masking removed


Meanwhile our Megg-28 pilot was painted up and installed


Before getting a decent (if ironic) hosing of NATO black


So decals for the F14, and painting up the engine section on the black jet and we should be getting close to completion this weekend all being well.

Thanks mate - unfortunately I can't find a star small enough in my decal collection and don't trust myself to paint one on without ballsing it up

Most of today has been spent getting the F14 close to the finish line; decals have been added, tail fins & arrester hook added and panel lines washed with MiG blue-black. I'll leave it to dry overnight and then give it a coat of ultramatte tomorrow before taking the masking off the cockpit and finishing any touching up


The opposition was masked off and had the engine section painted up in a combo of steel & aluminium (with hindsight I probably should have taken this shot from the rear )


Finally the only markings on the Mig-28 were a pair of red stars in a yellow circle either side of the tail fin, so I had a play with my circle cutter and after some experimentation think I've got the sizes right (bottom right)


So tomorrow it's a matte coat for the F14 and some masking & painting for the Mig before a panel wash and just about ready for the final reveal with a little bit of luck and a following wind!

You could colour photocopy your red decal stars, then cut one out, white glue it your helmet then clear coat it
Or print one off the Internet

That circle cutter doesn't leave any ragged edges when it cuts....like that.

Yep really happy with this - it's the first time I've played with it properly; stuck the tape to a clean cutting mat that I had tucked away and set the depth of the blade and all done

Made some more progress today - the F-14 I'm calling done unless I can see something else to fettle. The cockpit is still a bit foggy but the dudes are still visible


The Mig is almost done... here's the rear end shot I should have done yesterday


As you can see the masking worked and I have a yellow circle on the tail


So why aren't there red stars in it? Because the feckity feckin decals from the feckity stash feckity disintegrated as soon as they hit the feckity feckin water - so there's a sheet of various sized stars on their way from e-bay hopefully it'll be here in a few days so that gives me a little time to see if I can figure out the tiny star on the pilot's hat as the canopy is still removable

So here are the two together for the first time...

The new decals turned up this morning and were duly attached to the Mig - including one size small enough to fit on the pilot's hat


And with the canopy popped back in place


Ok Goose, time to have a little fun with this guy
