Revell Ford GT Le Mans 2017 1:24

Well my mojo is right up there at the moment so I'm going to keep pushing until it crashes....whenever that may be, but here is my next project, I've always been a big fan of Le Mans and GT cars, and I wanted something a bit less 'road car' after my last couple of projects, so looking forward to the decals on this one. Fairly new Revell kit, I'm not expecting Tamiya build quality but we shall see!

Pre 'blacked' clear parts, although they look a bit rushed

So this evening I made a quick start cutting the parts out and organising them a litlle bit:

Following this one! I just bought the Revell Corvette C5-R as I'm also a fan of the Le Mans and GT cars from the early 2000s, being a big fan of the early Gran Turismo games.

Interested to compare the quality of these kits as I've only done Tamiya so far.

Looking forward to seeing the progress

Thanks Hawk! Something you said the other week resonated with me a little bit, something about just build the bloody things! I know your circumstances obviously, but most of us have a stash that will take years to build, and I still have two more kits en route as I type, so I know that will just keep growing

So while my mojo is high I'm just going to forge ahead and build!

Made a bit of a start on the body tonight, it’s definitely not Tamiya quality, the moulding just isn’t as crisp...BUT....with a bit of effort and elbow grease I think it could be a nice model when it’s done, some seams needed sanding out on the two part shell:

After a couple of hours sanding and a quick wet sand, she’s silky smooth and ready for some primer, I opened up the central NACA duct on the bonnet as there is just a decal for this, but it was easily done and will look a bit more realistic when it’s finished I think

I’m a Tamiya fan boy, so it’s hard for me not to be ultra critical of a Revell kit, so it’s the little things, like the exhaust tips are moulded into the rear section of the body instead of being separate pieces, you wouldn’t get that from Tamiya, especially when they are such a prominent feature of the rear of this car, but considering the cost of the kit I guess they had to be economical with the engineering. I’ll have a think of I want to scratch build something to replace them or live with it.

But like I said I think it will be a nice model, the plastic sands up really smooth and seems nice and strong, quietly confident the paint will lay down nicely on it.

I stand corrected, after doing a bit of reading, those two huge round things between the rear lights are not actually exhaust outlets on the race car, they are a rear view camera and a radar believe it or not, the exhausts actually exit just in front of the rear wheels, so I’ll let Revell off this time!

Revell use the side opening box for one reason it saves money. Only 1 side wall on the box instead of four double sides on a traditional box for the top and base carton like Tamiya for instance. If its a long run of kits the saving mounts up on the packaging side

I like an upper and a lower box as the lower half holds the sprues needed for the initial part of the build and the top half holds the clear,decals and last to fit parts, just the way I have always done my builds.

Looking good so far and nice work ,laying down an undercoat on the body will show anything missed.

I’ve not been updating much as I haven’t had much to show yet, just beavering away in the background cleaning up all the parts, there is a fair bit of cleanup required but it’s pretty much all done now and most parts are in various stages of paint. I will get some more photos up in the next few days but the body has progressed.

Primered in grey and then the whole thing given a base coat of Tamiya LP2, and tonight I’ve done the worst of the masking jobs and painted the main body blue. They provide decals in the kit for the white stripe that runs down the centre and the white inserts to the two bonnet vents, but I thought this will look better painted, extra work but I’m pretty happy with how it’s turned out, pretty clean, a few very minor touch ups needed here and there but they will disappear once the decals and 2K go down.

I’ll lay the red down on the rear half of the body tomorrow, it’s all masked and ready to go.

I’m enjoying this kit so far, I have to admit!

One thing that’s bemused me though is why some of Revells other kits are 1/25th scale and this is 1/24th to match Tamiya?? I was just about to buy the Revell C7 Corvette to sit alongside this but then noticed the scale difference and that was a deal breaker for me, sorry Revell.

I too wondering about Revell's used of the 1/25 scale but wondered how much of a difference it will really make. 4% doesn't seem like it will be too drastic to the naked eye? My Revell Corvette C5-R just arrived so I guess I'll soon find out

All looking good on the the color side Gary. As for scales there have been a few strange ones over the years I lot of Airfix vehicles came in 1/32 scale years ago

there was a reason for this but it escapes me right now.

Things are moving now, the red is down, again happy with how it went.

Looking forward to getting stuck into the decals now!

And some other bits and pieces just to show you it’s all ticking over in the background, these aren’t finished parts yet, still some clear and Matt coats and some detail painting etc, but things are slowly starting to take shape:

I like the steering wheel, this is just one decal which although isn’t perfect (I don’t see how it would go down evenly over so many knobs and buttons anyway?!) but it looks good to me and will be fine through the glass once it’s finished. Gloss coat to go over the whole thing then I’ll brush paint the hand grips in a dark matt grey, I’ll post a pic of the finished article for reference once it’s done

I couldn’t resist a quick dry fit mock up of roughly how it’s going to look, pretty happy with my masking and paint overall on the body, the stripe runs nice and true the whole length I think.

I'm growing myself a mullet and going full 'murica mode on this one

The Revell 'destructions' call for a blue mix with a bit of ultramarine thrown in there, but that is more like the newer car, the ACTUAL 2017 car which the kit is trying to depict was just a basic blue, see pic below for reference of the difference:

2017 car (that I'm building):

Newer car, the red is also more metallic:

You can get aftermarket decals for the newer car, I might have a stab at it one day, using the different Blue and Red

My red and blue will become a lot more 'rich' once the 2K is down and polsihed, it is very Captain America at the moment

Another thing that Revell don't tell you is that the A-pillar should be gloss black as well, so I will be addressing that before 2K, don't worry all you rivet counters out there, I'm on it

Decals are pretty much complete now, LOTS of them considering most of the livery is paintwork, loads of tiny detail ones, but it's coming along now, I think I'll 2K it next and then paint the black bits in semi gloss to give it a bit of contrast.

Brakes are in the photo as I'd just finished the Brembo decals on those

I still haven’t had time to 2K it yet, but I will get it done over the weekend, promise! I have been messing about applying some carbon decal film to a few bits and bobs though, first time using carbon film for ‘custom’ areas so it’s a bit of a learning curve, but I’m impressed with it. I could go to town and cover everything in this stuff, but it’s a relatively cheap kit and not ultra detailed, so I’m only choosing to do the most visible parts and the rest have been painted semi gloss black.

Canards were tricky but turned out ok:

Side skirts and front splitter had the carbon treatment too:

This is nearing completion now, body is 2K’d and has been curing for a few days now, I think I’m going to flat it right back to remove the decal lines and paint colour lines and then clear it again, rather than just polish the first application, but that is for another day once fully cured.

The rolling chassis is pretty much complete now, fitment was a bit fiddly and not as 'positive’ as a Tamiya kit, some fixing points were vague at best...BUT it came together in the end, ignore the scruffy bits they will be 100% covered by the body shell, I don’t spend thousands of hours detailing stuff that will never be seen, so please forgive me for that!

Haha yeah that’s why I’m often reluctant to post progress pics sometimes as the work often looks scruffy until it’s finished! I have taken to signing my initials somewhere on every model now, seems like a fun thing to do. Thanks for looking in and the encouragement everyone.

I’m at a complete loss as to what to build next though, stash is up to 50 odd kits now, how do people decide what to build next?!

The 2K came up pretty well after a wet sand and some polishing, so I don't think it needs another top coat, but I have got the wing mirrors to 2K, and I'm also going to have a go at 2K'ing the clear parts as an experiment, so whilst it's mixed I could lay another coat down, I'll think about it today.

Mock up looks promising to me though:

Once the polish is cleaned out of the panel lines and the finishing touches are added and the body fixed in place properly it might turn into a nice model.

I have already given it a go on my test mule Capri, it actually turned out ok, improved the clarity if anything

I also saw a Japanese chap on Youtube building this exact kit and he did the same thing to his model and it turned out well, I like to live dangerously so no one is going to talk me out of it now

, even if I have to scrap the model, if you don't try you'll never know....so watch this space!
