Wingnut Wings the 'Duelists' Felixstowe [early] and Hansa-Brandenburg

Post by Hawkmoon »

  This one is up next and has been my holy grail kit for a while and its now going to be built. I did a kit review on this a while back , Link below-

viewtopic.php?f=352&t=26832

Its a typical WnW kits but the theme of the 'Duelists' kits is they are based on real life airial battles from the 1st WW so there are just the two painting sets one for each aircraft involved in the duel. I have decided to try the HGW wood decals on the Felixstowe and the only other option was the glazing masks. As for the Brandenberg HGW do a comprehensive set that gives in etch, masks and wood effect decals for the W.12- seatbelts, interior, engine, armament, exterior and masks. For reference if needed I have the windsocks books for each aircraft. The build will start with the Brandenberg.

As an aside for those worried that Wingnut Wings might be ceasing operations - this was in the latest Aeroscale newsletter: a firm called AIMS are planning on producing stainless steel bracing wires for WnW starting with their 1/32 Sopwith Pup.

I think in the last update on Andy's Hobby Headquarters he said that they'd already ceased trading. Maybe he got given some wrong information; they certainly don't mention it on their website, but I notice that their Lancaster project hasn't gone anywhere...

:thumb2: Thanks for looking in and your comments both. British rigging wires tended to be flat and had to point into the wind to cause less drag the German type was usually round :thumb2:

Oh yes. One has most definitely pulled up a comfy chair for this one. I doubt we'll see many more WNW builds  so every one should be savoured.

  As I said earlier I will be trying out the HGW wood decals on these two kits so starting with the fuselage and any other parts that will need decaling on the kit by spraying them all gloss white. The decals are transparent so you need a background color, the 1st picture shows the fuselage decals in place. I also started to assemble the cockpit instruments begining with adding the wood decal.

The cockpit parts after decaling and painting were made up this includes the metal wing spar being glued in position . The cockpit sides are wood with metal brackets and a metal frame that runs along the bottom of each side. The two parts were 1st sprayed white and when dry given a generous coating of liquid water color deep ochre. Again when dry use a brush with just water to even out the coating again leave to dry. Next use water color pencils to add dark and light highlights and after thats dry spray the whole thing with clear orange to seal everything in. The grey metal parts were the last thing painted.

      More soon

      Andy

  The two cockpit sides were added to the cockpit assembly then the joystick, fuselage divider and pedals were assembled prepared and then fitted to the cockpit along with the rear seat and the seatbelts from the upgrade set. Next the control wires were added the the fuselage assembly. The two fuselage sides had some molded detail removed that was replaced with etch from the upgrade set. The cockpit is only shown dry fitted to the fuselage half but it shows how the cockpit looks with the wood decals on the inner sides of the fuslage.

:cheers2: Thanks for looking in and your comments both. I thought maybe the wood decals were the wrong shade but as its a sea plane they varnished all the wood surfaces they could to keep it as water tight as possible. The more I look at it now the more I think it looks like clear varnished marine ply that would have been used in its construction. :cheers2:

  The cockpit dash was completed and glued to the engine bearer various tanks, chutes and magazines were also fitted. Next the two fuselage sides went on followed by the pilots and rear gunner fuselage pods. The rear stabiliser has been glued in place and the two floats assembled . Work has started on assembling the engine.

Yh the 2nd WW Georing was the over weight drug addict version but in WW 1 he was the opposite and quite thin it was after he got injured in the Beer Hall Putsch during 1923 that he became addicted to morphine that was to dog him for the rest of his life.

  The engine was assembled then dirtied up a little before fitting to the fuselage. Next came the front radiator and fittings along with the Pilots mascot. The wings and float struts were made up and for now there only dry fitted to the fuselage.

  The two forward firing guns have been made up the rear mount and Parabelum are the only things left to assemble now. The odds n sods around the engine were fitted and any grab handles also fitted along with the two bottom fuselage windows masked off with the aftermarket masking set. The supplied display pieces for the aircraft namely the two float dollys and the forward and rear tressles were assembled.

All the assembled parts were given two light coats of grey primer and should be ready for top coats in the morning.

:cheers2: Thanks for looking in and your comments Stokesy. WnW always give you choices in their kits like some seats they recommend shaving off the back parts to expose the wicker work on some British seats with jacketed guns like the ones above they give you a fully molded version or one with just the barrel. The jacket is made from the provided PE . The PE provided is high quality and thin as long as you have a semi soft piece of rubber and the correct size rods the jackets are quite easy to produce. :cheers2:

        Guns are spectacular :pistols:
Really coming together fast and furious but oh so well :th:
Very sweet work at a speed I can only dream of :jd:

I agree about WNW options in their kits. Multiple decal patterns, numerous props and wheels...
My SE5a kit had an entire second fuselage. It is too nice to just toss out.
So, I am going to make another plane by scratching the missing bits and using the extra parts to cobble together something. I have a Roden Viper engine already made for it and the fuselage has already been painted in oil paint. Just time.

Thanks for looking in and your comments Scott and I agree with what your saying you could even just make up the battered fuselage stuck up the corner in an old hangar with something say from the 1920's-30s in front of it.

  Paints all but done except for some touch up here and there. The floats and underwing struts called out for matt black but knowing the paint used would be a waterproofing bitumen based paint I opted for Rail match's 'weathered Black' its a sweaty loco black with blue and brown undertones. All the trellises and dollys were finished of in dark grey. The upper wings fuselage and tail had a coat of gloss black ready for the decals to go on. The underwings and elevator had a coat of buff to represent doped linen and the rest of the fuselage had coats of light grey and blue white.

I do hope the WNW shutdown isn't final. Gutted to see a quality company and dedicated staff go like that.

I also had my eye on their Lancaster too so its doubly gutting.
