For my next build, I will be tackling a sportbike. This will be a huge test of my skills as the paint will require some careful masking and I picked up some extra detail parts.
The first thing I did was to cut all of the parts off the sprues and separate them into smaller containers based on the base color.
I have about 10 base colors to paint. That should get me pretty close to just having assembly and detail painting. I built up the Virago (cruiser bike) this way and it worked out well. It saves a bunch of time switching out paint colors.
Next up will be cleaning up all of the parts and building any sub-components. There is a good deal of going over the instructions carefully building it this way. I have highlighted the instructions where the detailed parts go as well.

Love this kit for multiple reasons, the main one is how well engineered Tamiya kits are and how everything fits together.

I edited my post to host images from Flickr instead of directly from Scalemates. Not sure why you couldn't see them before, but they should be visible now.

Yep clear as a bell now.
Seeing as your bit of a tech wizz maybe you could help me with a small probem. My camera sometimes doesn't record a pic I'v just taken to the SD card properly or not at all. Is this a card issue or a camera problem do you think ? I took a pic last night of the camo I'm doing, but viewing it directly from the card it shows as a blank icon with Fi under it. I go into the preview screen on Picasa Photo viewer and I could see it in the bottom thumb nails but I couldn't actually view it full size. Then I closed it and went back and couldn't even see that....Is the card corrupted ?

My guess would be the card is buggered. Anytime you have intermittent issues with recording the image; the first suspect should be the card. You could try a reformat of the card, but they are cheap enough to just pop in a new one.

Oooh, I've never done two kits at once. But I am working on a different Ducati right now - may have to "whip-it-out" and start it.

And please, for the safety of others... Wear a mask, and some gloves, and probably a surgical gown, and definitely a diaper. Again, for
everyone's safety!!
So Hawk, I guess you're gonna take your time with this one, huh?!?

I hate to change the subject, but this is my build thread. I am still in a prepping stage. I have built up as many same color sub assemblies as possible. For some of the more visible pieces I used sprue goo as the cement.
I also drilled out the exhaust ports.
I also built up the top studio rear break disc.
Once the rest of the goo dries I should be able to start priming the parts.

If you don’t post in the thread, us homeless squatter rif raf start taking it over

There used to be a forum member who got really pissed when other people posted in his build...especially me and memes
Taking notes...gonna look for some PE to fit my disk

I will drill out the exhaust openings
I did the sprue glue thing on exhaust last night, but forgot the little “y” section at the bottom of the pipes, so gotta wait another day
Keep at it, coming along

I cut my sprue goo with Toluene. It seems to have improved the drying time. I was able to sand easily after about 12 hours. I didn’t take any specific measurements but I think the Toluene to TET was about 2:3.

Finally! I made some actual progress!
I got the engine parts painted up. I used Xtreme Metals Matte Aluminum (AK488) for the block. I mixed up a custom color for "gold" parts.
First to get the Titanium Gold as specified I did a 1:1 mix of Gold (AK472) and Titanium (AK669). I mixed that at about 3:1 with Bronze (AK474). Then I added a little more Gold because I thought the mix was still too dark.
Next, I mounted up the "Semi-Gloss Black" parts and slapped on some gray primer. I don't like painting black parts with black primer.
Upon inspection I have a few spots to clean up and to paint the wheels which I somehow forgot about.

After having finished this step I think I can give everyone a heads up. However much, Semi-Gloss Black, you think you will need... You need more. That was quite a lot of paint. Almost an entire 10ml jar (thinned heavily with MLT). Lots of small parts and wasted overspray. Glad that part is done!

So I finished the Semi-Gloss Black painting (I really love those LP paints, so smooth).
I then used Ultimate Gloss Black primer and painted the titanium bits using AK Titanium (AK 669). I am really liking this paint as well. I was using the Vallejo Metal Colors, but this is better. I also painted the seats with Splash Black for Upholstery. The flat black parts are just badger black primer.
I did a bit of CF work last night. Completly borked up the front fender so that will need to get repainted today. I did manage to get the coil guard covered decently. I will fix the remaining bumps today, but the surface area is good enough for me.
EDIT: I forgot I also Aquaglossed the engine to prep for weathering.

Front and rear fenders are both B's to carbon fiber. Usually I love doing CF, but these shapes are murder!!!!
I had two tries at both of my fenders and still have a wrinkle seam in them
Will see if I go for a third attempt or F it
Your cover looks excellent.

I got some of the extra bits attached to the engine. I also heat stained the exhaust and attached. It is a little overdone but will not be highly visible.

I have got a few spots to touch up, but overall I’m happy.
