brfd's Ducati BBB - I present, The ugly Duckling!!

So when I saw the Ducati buddy bike build that just sorta materialized... I had just built the Ducati Pramac MotoGP bike.
Not really wanting to do another bike, was really jones'n to do an F1 kit (I buy them like cups of coffee. ), but thought, "Don't know if I'll ever build this street version Ducati Panigale..." Figured I would jump in and do the BBB and try something different with this bike. Read: not do the model like the box art.

WHAT!?!? You're gonna try what?!?

You are not READY!!! This is how I felt about that endeavor. . .

So, some may have realized, most probably don't give two poops, but I'm a big MotoGP (bikes in general - goal in life is to make the TT someday) fan and I love the beginning of the season. New bikes, sometimes new faces, etc., etc...
Well, the MotoGP bikes test in Sepang and are generally just carbon fiber, like this:

Here is Cal testing the Ducati back in 2013 in preparation for the 2014 season:

My idea was to do this bike up like a MotoGP test bike - with all CF panels like the one Crutchlow is on, and I was hoping I had a number from one of the bikes I recently built...
Didn't like the way the numbers sat on the front fairing - wasn't quite enough room for them (and besides, I wanted a realistic number).
Thought about doing a number on the sides somewhere, but in the end just scrapped it - and I thought about ordering a new decal sheet from hiroboy or something, but that would've been expensive for just a couple of decals (not to mention, taking the numbers would pretty much make the rest of the sheet useless - maybe not : )

Here's what I came up with, and there are mistakes galore. I had times where I wanted to chuck this against the wall and other times I really enjoyed it. I tried lots of little things with this bike, like, I used the Rubber Black for the seat and it came out great, kinda looks like a real motorcycle seat. Obviously the first time I tried to CF on so much surface area. I learned that the more free time you have doesn't necessarily mean you will get good results. For me, Trial and Error were key. Emphasis being error. Many errors. Many, many errors. I went through two and half sheets of the 1424 SMS CF and still have wrinkles ALL over this Biaatch!

But in the end, it was a fun build and learned a few new techniques with the AB along with testing my firecracker fuse patience...
here she is.

You can see here I left off the, what I call the butt pad, rear cowl pad as I just liked the design of the three openings without it.
What do you guys think??

Here is where I got the most frustrated - the tank was killing me. Did it 3 pieces and really it should've been 5.
One night I spent over 3 hours trying to get it done with 1 piece of CF... and almost just HULK smashed the tank in my hand!!!
Pulled the decal off and went to bed to cry! Just had to sing myself to sleep to, The sun will come out tomorrow...

Overall, thoughts... hmmm. :scratch:: :scratch::
There are definitely things I would do differently and things that I would take more time on.
In the end though I am pleased with it - my skill levels have definitely improved, and have several of you guys on here to thank for that.
Appreciate you guys, and I enjoy being involved here. :thumb2:

And as always, thanks for looking!! :hi:

That ain't no ugly duckling...it is a beautiful Black Swan!!!

CF decals are unforgiving for the most part, so good on you for doing full fairings :jd:

Thanks bud!! :cheers2:

Meant to add in there this was the first time I did clear coat through the AB.
Used the Alclad clear coat. Came out pretty good, just needed to do a couple more coats. :D

You bet, and if I'm honest - it turned out better than I thought I would manage.
I've enjoyed every kit I've done in the last year and a half, and more importantly I have learned so much on each one.

Thanks for looking in BW!! :cheers2:

Very cool and exotic.. I'd have never thought of doing a carbon fiber bike.
