Magnifier Ford GT-40 mk11 1.12

Post by Hawkmoon »

  I ordered this before last Xmas and have just received the kit so everything else will go on hold for now. Its a re-boxing of the old trumpy kit and must be a short run only as most places are already out of stock. From what I can see the kit is the same just the box being different.

The box is curragated top and bottom so strong packaging to hold the contents I wont be doing a load of sprue pics as this kit has been seen many times now but if your interested in an unboxing video then click the link below:-

I have the Haines manual to provide some input on detailing and I also went straight to KA Model in Korea who do the basic upgrade and super detail sets for the kit opting for the super detail set which has the better resin seats and lots of cast metal and etch in it.

The first thing to be done is to remove all the chrome from the sprues as this kit like the old Trumpy kit has many parts that were never chrome on the real car.

:cheers2: It was on my list for a good while too, if your quick you might be able to grab one of these Magnifier kits at least there selling for around £100 and not the £150 asking price for the Trumpy one and like I said I cant see ant difference between the two kits. :thumb2: :cheers2:

  The instructions start with the power house so the engine fest begins. If like I have you strip the chrome parts this will mean a paint job on the engine and gearbox. I used Tamiya LP Titanium silver on the engine and LP Gun metal on the gear box any brackets and the exhaust ports are LP Semi gloss black . Molotow liquid chrome on the rocker boxes [needs going over again]. One thing to note just like the old Trumpy kit Magnifier chose to leave out the distributor cap and wires which means you will have to scratch build one or get an after market replacement I chose the aftermarket one which is winging its way to me right now.

Spent most of this afternoon cleaning up the white metal parts from the upgrade kit, a nice touch on the exhaust parts is they have reproduced the weld seams on each part. Once all the parts were prepped they all had a coat of grey primer .Im thinking of painting the exhaust parts white like a lot of cars of this period.

Over all the Trumpy kit is pretty good but they did cut some corners on detail of some parts for instance the two drive trains in the kit are very simplistic along with the exhaust parts. The white metal parts in the upgrade set have weld lines included on the exhausts and the drive trains are more scale as per the real thing. The Kit seats again are regarded as being very poor and the resin replacements in the upgrade set again more like the real thing. I have put a link up to show what is included in the set and also picture of the seats the kit ones being white plastic but its your choice on the upgrade set being worth it at the end of the day but personally I think it is.

  Work in progress on the power house the exhaust system has been added along with various other parts like the starter motor, water pump, coolant hoses, oil pipes. The distributor is a work in progress the base being attached to the motor. Still various bits of etch and touch up to do but progressing nicely

Tip- the four exhaust springs provided in the kit have no attachment hooks so run cotton through the spring and then through the mounting plate. When the spring is in the correct place tie of the cotton to hold everything in place. Lastly add a couple of drops of super glue to fix it in position.

  So having recently down sized my modeling area it would seem the box of upgrade parts placed in the 'safe place' is not where I thought it was : : . So whilst I wait for more 1mm distributor wire to arrive I have been adding etch to the body panels. The lower tub had the access panels for the rubber fuel tanks added front and rear. The centre door section has been cleaned up ready for additions to go on after the rear section is complete. The rear section has etch inside and out and still more to go on. More soon .

  The distributor wire arrived so that part of the engine was finished off I used a couple of slivers of heat shrink tube as cable tidys, this finishes the engine for now but there are parts still to add like the Carburettors but the come later in the assembly.

The assembly continues with adding the motor and other parts to the base tub to continue with this it means the base has to be fully painted, decaled and clear coated. The central panels of the base were painted in Tamiya LP Semi Gloss Black and the two side pontoons painted with Zero paints gloss Jet Black. Zero Diamond Clear coat was next and you can see where the gloss has popped nicely but the semi gloss is slightly more subdued which is exactly the finish I was after.

More soon.
