Tamiya 1/24 Mercedes 300 SL

Post by deniall83 »

The body was primed using Tamiya spray primer, painted using Tamiya Gloss Aluminium and cleared with Mr Hobby Super Clear III. I have huge issues with dust (thanks to two fluffy cats) and getting nice even coats through my airbrush so I have found using spray cans give a much better finish as long as I put in the time to properly wet sand and polish at the end.

The frame goes together beautifully and looks superb. A little tricky to paint all the areas but not too bad.

Pictures don't do the body justice. The finish is like glass after wet sanding several grits and polishing/waxing. Very happy with how it turned out, especially since I only used spray cans.

Chrome trim done with Molotow chrome pens.

Nearly complete.

Thanks for the comments guys.

To address a few questions; the spray booth is Sparmax and I only use it while airbrushing. I use spray cans in the courtyard. The kit is absolutely superb and goes together beautifully. Only tricky part is making sure the frame is all together properly. Take your time and you’ll be fine. Make sure the bonnet is added in the correct step. I left it off and then had to jimmy it in afterwards. Very scary! Molotow chrome pens are great but they stay sticky for a long time. Make sure you don’t touch them!
