A complete newbie from Edinburgh

Hi,

I'm Toto from Edinburgh and new to scale modeling. I usually model railway models in 7mm O Gauge but started to look towards military modeling as an alternative change of scene.

My modeling skills are very basic but will have some transferable skills from my interest in rai,way modelling.

My interest was I initially grabbed on seeing some phenomenal military dioramas and I thought ...... I must have a go at that. There again, it's one thing buying the kits, but another altogether in trying to build and finish them to the standards that are out there. Needless to say it could be a while before I post up any progress photos.

I'm looking to see what's available kit wise and also to sap your knowledge at the same time. So, there could be loads of newbie questions getting thrown out there.

Don't be shy about putting early works up we all started at the bottom and you've already been modeling...we don't bit or criticize, but you want some friendly pointers just ask.

Cheers. I will post up my efforts as I get going. I should be able to make a reasonable job. I have not done a huge amount with plastic kits as I have currently been modeling in etched brass ( where I am also a beginner). However I am a firm believer in what you say about starting somewhere. It's part of the ethos of my own railway modeling forum. " everybody welcome " regardless of ability.

The thing with modeling is the many different facets of the hobby .... the build, painting, detailing, weathering etc etc and they are all steep learning curves. Time, patience and growing experience are the key and you cant accelerate any of them.

It should be enjoyable or it ain't a hobby.

As a rule of thumb, what are the " better " manufacturers to look for in terms of detail and quality for ww2 military modeling ?

I'd rather spend a bit more and get something decent and buildable. I have learned through the 7mm etched brass kits that there is a huge difference in quality and buildability.

It depends is the answer, but that's not what you want to hear.
Tamiya generally the easy builds with everything fitting well,but they do take short cuts at times with details. Having said that they do rebox some from Icm and Italeri and you can expect more issues with those. Nothing I'm sure you can't handle.
Bronco do great kits but expect more complexity.
Dragon are good too, instructions can be vague and misleading.
Your best bet is find a subject you want to build then go to scalemates and check all the reviews , because it really does vary between manufacturers and subject to subject.
I would say to avoid the eastern manufacturers for now. These days Tamiya, Meng ,RFM, Bronco,AFV, Trumpeter,Takom and Dragon are your better mainstream companies for armor that's what I mainly build.

I had been looming for an American half track type gun / personnel carrier but not that tamiyas are like hens teeth.

I'm off to check stalemates to see if I can find one in 1/ 35th scale under any of your recommended brands. I bought about 4 or 5 kits last night from modelhobbies .co.uk .... various brands ... hobby boss, tamiya, thunder and Rilch.

I will be looking to build some small dioramas so the type of vehicles may not match any particular scene. Just a little of what I liked whilst searching. Mostly just a ww2 theme of some sort.

Welcome to the board! The only way to get better is to build more models, post up what you've done and check out other peoples work to see how they do it. Try something new with every build and soon you will find ways to do what you like. There is always something new to try.

Yes I forgot to mention Hobbyboss ( sometimes detail soft ) and the Hobbyboss/ Tristar kits are very nice. Thunder ( Mirror and LZ are the same group) is a bit more complicated , but good and Rilch is also good. However not too common and whilst I do own a couple of theirs I haven't built one yet. The Hobbyboss/ Tristar kits are very nice.
Build Tamiya then Hobby Boss as a starter is what I would say.
