My First Model in 34+ yrs...Revell 1/72 Macchi C.200 Saetta

Okay what I mean is my first REAL model in 34 years....

As most of you know I have over the last couple of years been slowly moving back into some model building.
I have been making my own Sci-fi models( poorly I might add!).... and scratch building every part and in any scale that it came out at..

Well I have promised a real build for a while and some time a go took a liking to all these wonderful creations you guys have built and displayed on ISM..
Now its my turn....

First aircraft since about 1977/78 and first kit since about 1980......So not long, only seems like last week..

Now some of you guys may remember me posting my " look what the postman delivered" Saetta and Corsair and the fact I got the Saetta at a steal costing only £2.15 in the end due to the company wrongly advertising the product and then offering me a 50% refund.. Bargain... but what do I do with a cheap, old tooling Revell piece of tat??

So do I bin this or do I work the butt off it and try to turn it into something one of you "real" professional modelling types might produce??
Our very own Hobby Modeller built this very model and posted just about the only helpful video on Youtube about this kit..

Best get busy and post some sprue shots..

Now most of you will have noticed some flash, a thick lump of clear canopy and NO DETAIL in the cockpit.....
NO instruments.....NO real seat ( not shown in the sprue shots ).......NO wheel bay detail..... NOTHING but a great big hole you can see from the cockpit to the floor....

..... Poor Italian Pilots, hanging on for dear life....and so drafty??

Now what can I do to make it more than it is????

Wow thank you very much Andy I'm blushing

Not sure about aftermarket stuff but a lot could be done scratch building in the cockpit area and perhaps around the engine/exhausts also you will NEED to scratch build to make a wheel well but as I only did a sheet of plasticard I'm sure there's a more detailed approach you could follow. Rescribing panel lines would help as well

Not to sure about accuracy on this kit but I know there are a couple of books out there and possibly some stuff on the internet

... and Yes sir I have the PDF's got the build logs, walk rounds and old photo links....

Yeah its a shame Ian, we'll have to compare stashes with Nige and a couple of others in the near future for our own buddy build mate.

Nick and Nige... I think I have about pulled it off, and included extras and cross hobby built to boot......
You'll see... Its a little piece with our very own master, Bagpiper Jim in mind..
All will become clearer soon I promise...

Ian, UKscalemodeller you mentioned that you have this same kit and would be looking out for hints and tips for your build??

First then I think a little internet read and catch up along with some reference sites should keep you informed mate..

Now hopefully I can do this Saetta justice... its old, ( like its an old Matchbox kit old ).... but supposedly a good fit needing little filler and looks the part once "camo'd" up..

.... for colour and decal reference in case I chose a different scheme to the one pictured on the box and to better understand the pilots, crew and airfields they flew out of...

Anyways aftermarket kits for the cockpit etc... are available but only for the larger scale and for those who have never seen the "detailed" cockpit in the 1/72 scale just pop over to Hobby modeller's Youtube channel and watch his fantastic build as he displays the poorly crafted bucket seat and pilot and uses them, very well I might add.

This last shot is detail from the newer Macchi 202 cockpit...

Also there is no wheel well detail and amazingly these Italian pilots flew without radio's until later when some where fitted optionally??

1/72 kit comes with NO radio antenna but shows one on the box shot??

So lots of options, lots of ideas and lots to do!!
....and this is me.... you can guarantee things are gonna get worked here as I hate having only half a kit just because its the smaller scale..

So a bigger update outlining my ideas and some build shots will be my next post over the next couple of days..

They are from the 1/32 scale and are my inspiration to improve my non existent cockpit in the 1/72 scale..

Okay I am back for an update with hopefully some build pictures and some progress...

Right so I got some old seat and pilot screen grabs from Hobby Modellers video.. # Thanks mate #

As you can see the seat and detail is non existant and the Pilot himself is just wrong..
I started a thread querying the scale of said pilot and some Airfix pilots and ground crew I purchased and decided he may be wrong..
Well I brought some Airfix New tool kits in 1/72 a short while back from Wilkinsons store in the UK and decided to compare pilots... Take a look...

as you can see the first picture shows the Revell pilot to be smaller than the Airfix 1/72 one, then on comparessen with the standing pilot I think they are damn close to the same scale making my initial thoughts right.
My original revel Italian Pilot is about 10 years old and flying for his country..

So I don't wanna use the original meaning my cockpit is gonna be semi visible ( the canopy glass is real thick and scratched )
I am going to use a standing Pilot, Force slight perspective maybe and have to doctor the cockpit and seat if its going to be visible...

Lets start with the seat then? But first I want to blank off the floor area so you cannot see the loor through the cockpit when viewed at a certain angle..

Now on to building a seat...

And here you can see my child pilot readying for flight....

Instrument panel and as it will be barely visible I am going to make it bigger than it should be to bring emphasis to it..

While that drys abit I will drop back to ribbing the wheel well areas for detail...

Well this is 1/72.... very small and poorly built.... and my first plane in many many years....
I will try and detail the inside of the cockpit with wire and some bits and bobs to simulate handles, extinguishers exc....

Drilling out for fuel lines and hydraulic cables running in the wheel wells to the engine etc...

Now to proceed quickly I decided to paint up light grey then give an oil wash of black to mucky the interior greeblies up a bit...

Engine too, after a coat of aluminium...

So next time I will put some bits together and add some wires, belts and some dry brush on the cockpit and engine..
I have also got an idea as to what I want from this build and it includes a diorama.

A diorama with a slight difference as I want to portray a runway/hanger.... early morning patrol flying from Grottaglie airfield in Italy in early 1941........ and the hanger will be made from a different modelling material all together, our own Mr Bagpiper Jim would be proud I'm sure as I know he is a master at this style of build and his Youtube channel shows his skill.

This may get a little crazy but from where I'm sitting with this build today its gonna turn out fine I'm sure....

Ha ha ha .... thanks guys for the comments...and Ian, its me dude who is so glad you have decided to hold off with the build until I get a couple more REAL kits under my belt...

Like I said this is the first kit since forever ago... Its just me being me I gotta try and add some bits to it.....

So where was I ??..... Oh yeah mucking the hidden bits up abit...and the last pictures showed it looking pretty dirty...
Well it did get a little wipe off in the cockpit area as I did go a little overboard...

So gonna button up the wings and dry fit abit...

Dry fit time....

Oooooww... ribbed wheel wells....

and a mucky cockpit...

Still needs a stick and some harnesses I think....

...But first remember I mentioned some hydraulic hoses and fuel lines and stuff?? framework and support for the undercarriage? Lets build some....

And dry fitted for test.....

In bits again for some overkill paint and drybrush work...

Yeah that's the same chrome spray on the seat and used to drybrush as the Solarcar got sprayed...

Dry brushed and stick fitted....

Harness time and I am going with the usual masking tape creation....

...and painted a Khaki colour...

Dry fit again...

Okay so maybe its not the best or the prettiest, my photo's are all grainy and blurred and there are lots of them... for that I am sorry guys...... but hopefully I have made the wheel wells and cockpit just a little bit more interesting than the bare, boring hole through the plane that it was before...

Okay just a couple more pictures of the plane getting fitted with my add-ons and glued up ready for some filler and sanding then we done for this post....

Thanks guys, glad you like the wheel wells and pipe detail...

...and Ian, mate on a plus mine has gone together a treat.... Wheels and undercarriage is a bit frail and not too great, and the detail is none existent with raised panel lines etc... But for an old matchbox kit the fit is fantastic with next to no filler required.
I superglued my undercarriage on and fiddled with fit as it cured getting a good clean near invisible joint. Check the pictures above where you can see the cockpit as I glue it all shut, and underneath on the tail and wheel well shot... Only a small joint visible where the wing section joins the fuselage..

I am on the home straight with mine now, decals on, gloss coated ready for some light weathering before the flatcoat, but if I can help or offer advise as you build yours let me know...
I have gone for the Italian finish so got the German markings if you need spares for yours mate..
Good luck, if you got the time and space for another build, go for it dude..

Thanks Andy, you should give one ago.... I either did this old kit or the same Airfix Spitfire Mk1a new tooling that you have on the go..

So I am going to bring this up to the primer stage to keep it moving along...
First a quick look at the seams and wing roots, maybe a quick sand and some filler... we'll see..

Just a little seam visible there..
Wingroots....

Nose seam and wingroot...

A little seam work again though most will be hidden by the nose cowl..

Canopy time and as I worried before, you can see the crap standard masking tape trimmed and applied under a magnifying many hands tool..
I did dip this thick piece of clear plastic in "Klear" and left it to dry under cover for 2 days prior to masking up...

...and attached using white PVA glue....hope it holds okay...

The next picture shows where I lost the very topmost raised panel edge lightly sanding the sprue piece from the fuselage.. Damn...

Masked off the cockpit prior to painting..

....and the engine detail..... did I mention I had dry brushed the viewable engine with the "Solar car" chrome spray??

And best not forget to mask off the wheel wells?

Grey primer applied....

Can see some filler is required...

Taped and some filler sparingly applied..

Taped up for the underside grey spray...

And painted light grey...

Airbrush...Generic £20 rubbish that came with my small not so good compressor...

The Pilot comparison as discussed in the "when is 1/72 scale, 1/72 scale?" in modelling chat, and as shown earlier compared with the Airfix pilot with an unstarted kit...

and finally trimmed off his stand and parachute taken from his hand and added to his back....

Next time guys we going to get a little bit lost with this build, but hopefully in a good way.

Andy thanks dude...
I used a selection of 0.5 and 1.0mm styrene for the chair curved around a pencil to give it the bucket seat shape, and cut to size for the wheel well section.
I cut the enlarged clock detail on the instrument panel from a cut up thinly sliced cotton bud and the smaller bits from tiny square cut 1mm styrene.
Wire in the wheel wells are from some old computer spares, laptop I think, again two different sizes, while the steel framework in there is a chopped paperclip.

The side detail in the cockpit is again some of the smaller gauge wire along with a scratch built throttle handle on the left, a piece of heavy gauge wire ( like paperclip ) again for the stick and an old resistor from some circuit board for other greeblies on the other cockpit inner wall.

Thanks Nige, glad you like it...... and as you have seen the finished build has turned out okay!

Back again guys and even though my build log isn't, my Saetta is finished and a couple of days ago I posted the first Finished build pictures exclusively on ISM's facebook group page. A handful of members have seen, liked and commented so if you are feeling left out and would like to see the finished plane get over to the Group page, register if you haven't already and drop a like or a comment on the post!

Okay, I've promoted the FB page for the newcomers who didn't know about it, so I best continue with the build and as always I can never just build something....... I have always got ideas and display options buzzing through my head.
As I mentioned earlier, the Saetta is finished but I have also been busy tinkering with something to go with it.

Followers of this build will remember my little pilot figure and the walking pilot I have asked advise and opinions about.
Well he is going to be involved now, along with a couple of friends and an Entirely different build idea and style...

Sometimes I stumble across some clever and imaginative things as I surf the interwebs and view the tubes...

I also occasionally log on to a forum that is entirely paper modelling based.... Planes, trains, boats, dioramas and Sci-fi a plenty.
It is this medium that I am going to show now..

While searching for Hanger and airfield diorama builds and posts I stumbled across a little something I want to share with you.
The scale is 1/144 but as a backdrop and dressed as a small airfield hanger/shelter this will do..

The first site I found was by the creator himself and a clever builder indeed.
A guy called Tom way back in 1995 built himself a diorama display for his Luftwaffe 1/144 models. Using different coloured card he built and displayed and personally I think it looks amazing. Take a look.......

Then I discovered a revised version and thought "Yes i'm using that.."
Take a look, this guy has used textures and recovered the walls and roof area even adding an interior option to dress the inside walls.

Is paper modelling cheating in plastic scale modelling??
Some of the "other" modelling sites who rivet count may think so...... but I think i'm safe at ISM..

Pictures then....

Roof first...

Out buildings on the sides built around a foam core for strength..

Side walls built and 2mm cardstock used to strengthen the walls then the optional interior wall detail added..

Gotta bend the roof to curve but am going to line it with corrugated card for strength again..

Interior floor area..

So I have found an old picture frame in the loft saved for such an occasion and I position the idea out to see if it will fit...

So you can see where I am going with this, the pilot is gonna be on an early morning outing from the old repair hut/hanger 13 at Grottaglie, Italy 1941..

Thanks Ian...... It matches the purple wall in the room apparently so it gets the weekly wash and straight back on again so the purple theme doesn't get disrupted much..

Okay quick update and probably gonna mix it up a little with some painting and diorama display building...
At the moment in real time I am about finished with this entire build but you guys are seeing things from a couple of weeks ago..
So I best show some pictures to entertain you all...
Quick Paper hanger reminder picture...

Trust me it looks loads better now....

Lets blow some paint on the Saetta then eh??
Light grey undercarriage masked off..

Humbrol dark green matt applied..

The light has made this look very pale and washed out sorry...

The guns got a coat of flat black then when dry I used the dust from a lead pencil and buffed up the black giving a metal like appearance..

Masking off the engine cowl ready for the yellow of the Italian air force..

A couple of coats brushed on of the yellow..

Tips of the propeller too....

Okay so while all that was drying I started on the figures.... Yeah started as 1 pilot, then 2 pilots and todate we got 4 figures in this little build now.... and I have never painted a single figure before until now.....

And I think a little work on the diorama base just to show an effort...
First I am going to cover the surface in newspaper and pva glue to lose the shiny finish..

Then instead of using clay or building taped mounds of newspaper as I did my Solar car dio, this time I am going to soak some torn up newspaper in a bowl of water over night..... you'll see...

Okay so I am after fronting my Paper Hanger with a concrete concourse edged with grass and mud etc... and to have some muddy, sandy pathways going off the edges and around the hanger. Using modelling card/ plain grey mountboard from the art supplies shop I cut up some squares then set about the soaked paper. I drained the paper and am left with a paper pulp, grey in colour and after mixing with PVA becomes an excellent modelling medium....

Card squares glued in place, roughly sketched walkways and grassed areas... time to get messy, Disney art attack style...

And finally the paper hanger positioned to give a rough idea how this dio will look...... well lots to do yet but you get the idea!

Thanks Dan... The Hanger is finished now.... The base is all but complete and the Saetta was finished a couple of weeks ago.... Its at that.. Bring all the bits together stage to finish and well I am happy with it..

Its just so damn big I ain't got a clue where to put it once I put it all together...

The diorama base is just missing a couple of little bits to complete but Royal mail ain't delivered my supplies yet..

Okay guys all of you on the Facebook page can now see the finished build but for those not joined up we are still building this Saetta and the Hanger Diorama.
Lets paint the bird and build some bits then...

The 3 Revell colours required..

and here we go with the first of the spots...

Second colour added...

With the prop and engine in place.. you can now see the scratch built radio aerial made from a small pin and a couple of strands of wire twisted and glued to the tail.

Taped up ready for the white band..

Painted...

Clear lacquer time and again i am using the local £1 store. this is a standard gloss coat so i can apply decals...

Now while the Lacquer dries ithink i will start and make some bits for the Hanger..
This Hanger will include a work bench, a makeshift work bench for welding etc... some tools and bits, a sweeping broom, sheet metal, a mini compressor and some welding gear along with various planks, bits of wood and some chocks for the wheels on the floor..
Starting with the bench and some fuel and oil drums made from the eraser end from a pencil....

with the pilot for scale..

...and the scratch built cutting gear...

compressor tank without its added extra bits...

and a quick coat of grey primer on the base area. This will be the base colour of my concrete concourse also....

Work bench stained..

Back to the plane and i superglue the undercarriage for strength..

Guns on...

Starting to paint the cutting gear...

and the fuel and oil drums... rust for fuel, grey for oil and a sand one ...and i scratch built the handpump for the fuel..

little mechanic for the hanger interior...

Painted and weathered....

Right so next time i will finish up the Saetta and sort out the Hanger. I have decided to add a small L.E.D to the inside of the Hanger to light up all the details i am going to add....

Thanks Dan, have you had a look on the FB page at the finished build?

I think it turned out good for only my second go at a diorama base.
The workshop/hanger repair shop was something I came up with while looking at all those Saetta pages I listed at the start of the build.
This Saetta is just getting ready for a return to the air from Hanger 13, the unlucky little repair shop....

Love the girder work in the roof.... The tiny tool rack etc ... Is superb.

I reckon I have seen this piece of yours before...

..... Have you shown it anywhere else? Or maybe just a Google search I did brought it up from your flikr account I dunno..

Its amazing to say the least... I hope with practice I can create such pieces..
Though as I look at the finished build of mine, I am quite impressed with how it turned out...
There's hope for my work yet!!!!
