Revell 1/24 VW Barn find

Hi to everyone from sunny Wales
My first post and most recent build is this Barn find project I've been working on for some time now, work stopped a couple of months ago after further surgery on my left hand after a work accident. its all healed up now but I cant make a fist so intricate work and detailing is getting harder to do and like all of us old timers my eye sight isn't what it used to be so two pairs of specs and a magnifying glass is almost always needed
anyway enough about me for now and on with the build. My pics were taken on a mobile phone camera so quality isn't the best sorry.
first up a photo of the kit I'm using. Hope the photo comes out the correct size

Nice set of decals but these wont be used for this model

some damage added here and there with a Dremel


then added some base coats of Vallejo rust over a German red brown primer

The interior of the van had the same treatment with various bits in a Dremel and a scalpel. The Mrs wasn't too happy with all the plastic everywhere

primed with Vallejo German red brown, no need for a perfect finish here

All the parts were given a light coat of different rust colours through a brush

got side tracked and made up a pallet for later


hopefully the scale will be about right

Time to make a mess using Anglesey rock salt and water

first top coat of light blue over the salt. I was hoping to get the washed out look, looks a little darker on the bench.


when dry I used a soft tooth brush to clean all the salt off the parts

Then its on to the inside but this time I used grey

the salt looks perfect for gravel but it will attack the paint so needs to be removed

looking a bit scruffy now after the salt was removed. The roof was done in Vallejo off white and the sides in light blue mixed with a little of the white in areas to give contrast.

I used some stick on lettering to the van before the light blue to give the van some interest but I'm not keen on the type face, hopefully the weathering will hide some of it later.

hub caps were given a spatter of rust


wheels had the same treatment with a off white top coat

front and rear bumpers were also done in the off white

Very nice imaginative work I haven't actually seen the salt medium used before. I was aware of it, tooth paste and Vegemite also of which none of them I have used yet.

Its my first attempt at salt weathering. I think I used a bit too much to be honest as I wanted a little more top coat but its hard to tell until you rub it all off. Gives great results though a little sporadic and makes an awful mess

Started adding weathering here and there using vallejo paints and weathering masters


thats it for the T1 for now.
She sits nicely on this shortened plank

second kit I used for this project was the 1/24 Heller Ferguson TE20
the engine is nicely detailed for an old kit and goes together well

For the engine cover to hinge and close better I needed to remove some material from the inside

Primed and given a coat of Mig red brown

The fuel tank and radiator were given a coat of Vallejo metal color Dull aluminium over the top of Mig chipping fluid then more chipping fluid before painting the red top coat. When it was almost dry I worked it with an old paint brush and toothpick to remove some layers.

I can see it more in it's totality now and I can see it's going to be stunning.
What are you going to use for dust and rotting debris on the roof of the combi ?

Hopefully it will make a little more sense as I go along I'm going to have a go at weathering the van up with pigments and washes later in the build, I did do a little bit but there's lots more to do and it can wait for a little bit.

back to the Ferguson
painted up the wheels and engine cover in the same way as the van using less salt this time


I added a bit of styrene to the assembly on the rear of the tractor and added some nuts and bolts then it was fixed in place with 0.6mm brass rod

time to move onto the stand, I cut an old plank up (about 14") and reattached the metal strip to the end then give it a good coat of PVA to seal the wood.



I was going to use static grass on the base but I had this Mig "stony steppe" mat sitting in a draw for weeks so decided to use it here for speed and it looks cool

Made up a few rocks to add interest

A good PVA (not the rubbish from the £ shops) was used to stick the mat down and pinned in place over night

now its dry I can add the groundwork, using mats really saves time and you can add to it later.

I made up a thin mix of plaster and modelling compound with a touch of PVA and spread it about half an inch thick over the wood, it dry's pretty quickly but gives plenty of time so you can work it. I love working with plaster its so versatile.




The VW was wrapped in clingfilm (I hate that stuff) and placed on the wet plaster so it leaves a seat for the wheels and Used a set of tractor wheels from a revell kit to make some track channels in the plaster.

With the matting you need to dress in the edges with the plaster otherwise it looks like a badly laid carpet, more layers later to hide the join.
As you can probably tell I am further ahead with this build but its still under construction, I thought I would show you guys how I do things and how I mess up from time to time:roll: learning every day. tips and tricks gladly recieved

first a base coat of diluted Mig mud using an old brush




Then I used some Mig washes (splashes) wet ground and damp earth around the edges, excellent washes. The rocks were given a wash with acrylics to blend in with the small rocks in the matting

Time to build some sort of Barn, well its a shed really would need a bigger plank
I drilled two fixing holes in the base for the posts and started to make up the sides of the shed using balsa and lollypop sticks, If I were to do this again I would use a better wood for the planks as the lolly sticks are a little dense and harder to work with but on with the build.

At first I used mod podge pva to help stick the wood together but found it was a little messy and looked awful when you start to add washes so switched to superglue and sowing needles as nails cut to length and pushed home, adds a little more detail.



dry fit to check height I'm working to eye so trying to get the correct sizes or somewhere near is a bit hit and miss

The windows were made from mobile phone screen protectors and cut to size with a pair of scissors

started building the small gable end of the shed ruffing up the wood a little and using pins in the joints

I have some corrugated card that was airbrushed when I did some work on the VW that gives a good look but decided to do the roof using tin trays from the £ shop.
If you make a few you have plenty to throw away

hopefully in my friends house if it doesn't end up in the bin before then I tend to build things on a whim depending on the day and use what's to hand, I also build what interests me rather than stick to one subject and just have fun with what I'm building. Never done a wooden building before so I thought it would be fun to do and fancied trying out the salt weathering, its a lot of fun

thanks the sticks were a pain to fettle into shape, a softer wood would have been easier to work and it would have taken the glue and washes better but valuable lesson learned.
now I have half a shed I can start to add washes


you can see here the problem I had with the PVA glue residue that should have been cleaned up earlier this had to be removed but as it got sucked into the wood it leaves a mark DOH!


also the multitude of pins needed trimming off on one side

this photo was taken when it was still damp, it gets a lot lighter as it dries so its a long process to get some colour into the wood but once the base washes are added it takes the top washes better and its great fun

I used a drop of Gorilla glue to stick the shed to the base to give it a firm hold

its about now my barn idea went out of the window and even the shed was looking a bit small to get a T1 into but we will carry on. As I mentioned earlier I just have fun with what I do and if it works its all good
