Global Scale Modeller

Hi everyone, so I'm about to work on a 1:72 boat model (Revell Luxury Yacht) so its pretty large. The hull colors are called out to be gloss black and white. Now the questions I have are in painting the hull, Do I after primer:

1. Airbrush gloss paint on? I have enough Tamiya gloss X1 and X2. If so what are the finishing techniques for the inevitable imperfections. Wet sand, polish? Do I then add a clear gloss coat like Alcad Aqua gloss

2. Do it like a car, as Paul does - paint then 2K (I would be using Gravity 2K? If so do I need a gloss paint before I 2K or could I just some Tamiya flat for the colors? Or Mr Color. I would prefer not purchasing some Gravity color?

If it is smoking glossy, I would go to 2K as you say like a car. That is the easiest and most direct
My current motorcycle project with Splash 2k clear on it's tank, no polish no nothing. Nice wet look clear.


Once you get the hang of 2k clear it is prety straighforward to get darn good clear. The others you mention are kinda shiny, but no hwere near the 2k level.
But 2K is dangerous, needs good ventilation, protection and a booth.
You can get some good clear out of a spray can too
I don't know where you are on the modelling skill curve to say definitevely

Here is a yacht of same size; it is pretty glossy like a 2K


I don’t think you can go wrong either way you asked about.
You could paint your Tamiya gloss paints and then use the gravity 2k overtop. That is what I would do.
If you get it in smooth, you wouldn’t even have to sand and polish...I don’t as cannot get it shiny as 2k untouched

Well the more I thought about it today and looked at where all the white was (top of deck, etc.) and I want to all to look similar - this might be a real pain with 2K. So I think I'm going to try with the alcald after the gloss paint is polished witrh Novus. That said I am doing some test styrene squares both black and white, using the gloss paints and then doing alclad aqua gloss, alclad clear gloss and gravity 2k. I'll post the results.

Nice yacht and a cool model kit. I see you can borrow a real one for £12,000 a week
