Tamiya TS paint is making me crazy

Post by erased »

Ive built models on and off for 20 plus years. Started around 6 and 30 now. Ive used Tamiya paint plenty of times. TS aswell, without any issues. I started a joint-built of 4 tamiya f2001 and 2 f2000. So far 2 noses and 2 engine covers have been painted with ts49. And it is making me nuts. I have washed the plastic, wet sanded, primed, wet sanded and the damn primer did not stick. I wet sanded the primer, before painting with the ts49 the first time and same damn problem again. Paint did not stick and ended up thick in some places. I know how to paint and I did quick light passes etc. The way you paint with a can. Ive no damn idea WHY Im getting these issues. I sanded and painted a 2nd time earlier, but I feel like the same issues will occur. Im thinking of to just stripping the paint, re paint with 2 layers of primer and re paint with 1-3 light coats of ts49.

Im painting the exact same way this guy is doing in this video with the ts49 can. And he has no issues at all.

There's no guarantee the paint of free of contamination. Try another can from a different source.

Maybe it's the primer. I had this issue recently after using tamiya primer in can. I had it for a really long time. Decanted it to put it in my airbrush. And the result was a kind of glossy primer where the paint had trouble sticking too... I tried another can and an another primer and it was fine.

The primer went fine. The ts30 wasnt any issues. Neither the ts29. Maybe a bad can of ts49.

Tried with another can. Same damn problem. Smashed the nose cone on the ground so it cracked and broke. Next up fix it with some putty and glue, then try and re do everything. Prime and paint.

Im gonna remove as much as possible with some P600 wet sand and a knife. And start from the beginning again. The ts29 and ts30 were no problems at all with the kit.

Use Mr Levelling Thinner and an old brush to remove the paint. Work the brush until everything is loose and wipe off the excess. Then spray more MLT through the airbrush and wipe clean again. Now lacquer thinners need neutralising so wipe the model down with Ultimate Airbrush Cleaner, Thinners or similar and then wear gloves to handle the model. This should get the plastic clean and ready for primer. Sorry if this sounds like I'm preaching but there's so much body oils gets on models whilst building that it needs removed well before the priming/painting process.

Let us know how you get on and well done for sticking with it :th:
