Been working on this for a few weeks, again work is impacting on my bench time
I'm going to do it in the colours mine was, black/red.

Small up date, work is still preventing bench time, but managing to grab some here and there

Wheels painted, looking at a real bike the wheels aren't really high surface finish, think I've captured the finish.

I was just thinking about you build the other day. It's good to see you're still making progress.

I'm with you, I think you got the wheel finish right.

Looks excellent to me, disks are superb!

Good start, and yeah I really like the wheels, captured that cast look perfectly.

These came out really well, great paint Alclad 2, just painted over the stripped plated surface

Very nice so far. I really like the soft color variations of the metals....

Are you going to paint it to match the colors of the box?

The bike is as close as I can get it to be the same bike I had. As such mine had a aluminium sub frame all the early UK (99 -20) bikes did, then reports of them cracking and they were changed to steel. I never had nay issue with mine in the 3 yrs I owned it.

Beautiful work, you guys that build bikes must have real steady hands. If I was applying glue my single drop would be smeared every where, but the the glue point.

Thanks mate, I've had a good few glue issues myself in the past. Luckily I'm still blessed with steady hands and long may it remain, I hope.

she's a beauty Kev, its only the other objects in the photo that tell you its not the real thing! I'm with Digger - if it was mine it would be a big ball of glue by now...

Currently trying to find paint to match the red/black my bike was. The black I've sorted the red is proving a challenge

It looks great. im very impressed with how clean and well fitting everything is. it must have been an awesome bike to ride around on. I had an 87 gsxr750 and that was crazy fast. this thing would have been scary fast.

Thanks mate I had GSX-R1100 which was also an 87 and much later a 1000K2 which was absolutely mine blowing, similar power the the Busa but around 45kg lighter and 60Kg lighter than your 750 with almost 60bhp more.

The Busa was amazing, one of best things about it was you could ride it around at very docile speeds, just open the throttle and it would just go. Absolutely seamless, clean power all the way to the max

Mine was an unrestricted version, back in the day, it did a genuine 202mph through timing lights. To achieve that took a bit of fiddling, with the fuel/ignition maps, rip out the endless filters in the fuel system about 13 of them if memory serves me, replace the fuel pump lines, TRE basically a 4k resistor I think it was in the gear position switch, so it would always run 4th gear map. Cost 90p for 3 at the time. Rip off merchants were charging anything from £20- 60 and still do.

It would still run as sweet as a nut at 20mph in top gear, twist and go faultless roll on power. They handle real well too once set up correctly, you've just got to recalibrate your brain to the speed, mine pulled 100mph at just under 3k in top, standard on the pre restricted was 3.5k or thereabouts, the motor is sublime. I'd recommend anyone ride one, before they say they don't like them.

The light makes the red look like a standard red but it's not, it's a candy red.

All the bodywork is now primed and ready for the colour.

I couldn't find a Suzuki Candy red, all available was either too light/dark or the wrong shade, so set about trying to replicated it. Tried various reds and different undercoats, about 12 different combinations all told.

Settling on Zero paints Pearl Red over Tamiya X11

The black was by contrast much easier, Tamiya LP40 Metallic Black.
Then came putting them together, which would mean, first colour coat the whole lot in LP40, mask off, X11 and then Zero pearl red. This would mean the red being thicker and I'd more than likely have to rub down/feather the masked edges. I then thought why not just pearl over the LP40, it is metallic.

Can you tell which red is over X11?

That paint combo is going to look sweet. I can't wait to see the fairings painted.

Tamiya supply some very nice masks, however you have to cut them out which isn't the easiest of tasks

All done

Applying the large firing mask was a bit of a challenge but managed it.

Hopefully get some paint on them and possibly even finish on the weekend

Friend of mine sold his bikes because he couldn't stop riding fast on them. He had the nick name of Rocket. He did a run To Geraldton to pick up a part needed by his contractor boss so they could bale some hay. He drove 100km and went into the city to get this part so had to slow down for that bit. Which consisted of 5km through the built up area and then came back in 54min total of 200km. Needless to say the cops arrived 1 min after his arrival having blasted past a parked car. The cop said by the time I turned his car around Rocket was gone. They caught him because he ran out of fuel. He still holds the record.
Apparently the bike used to get a wobble up at about 215, but push it a bit more and at 220 it would disappear.

I hate that about tamiya. At the price they sell the kits, it should be precut like Eduard. I just cut those for my Ki-64 for the canopy. And you never know if you have to cut directly on the line, just outside or just inside. I try all of it and it's never the same fit. But great work. My hat to you. Bikes are pretty hard to build and have a good paint finish on, but now with the paints on the market, like the lacquers it makes it a bit easier.

That's a very sad story Scott, one sadly all too common. I've had bikes since I was 16, been riding continuously ever since, I've had just about every big Jap sports bike going over the years, raced for a few years too. Wouldn't be without a bike, given up the racer types and reverted back to what is known as retro. Bikes of the late 70's - 80's for me, slowed down a lot and just enjoy the ride and the scenery

220 in real money 136ish mph, my Busa hit at 202.2mph = 325.4kph, just had a little play with a few simple things, but no mechanical modifications. These things are mind-bendingly fast, as mentioned earlier they restricted them from 2000 onwards.

My wife screams (I kid you not) the same at me. I've had my eye on a Dnepr with sidecar for sometime - Soviet Army used them extensively so its ideal for re-enacting. Everytime I mention it her voice goes up in octaves and decibels on the common theme of "YOU are NOT getting a motorbike".
Wouldn't mind if it was a rocket machine like you guys had... Dneprs for all they are 750cc flat twins are all about torque and not mph. Powered side car and reverse gear are handy off road though....

Got admit model bikes aren't my thing at all but this build is proving compelling watching/reading. I'm really looking forwards to seeing the finished machine!!

I'm having a hard time seeing the mistake. Should there maybe be some red on the bottom of the side fairings?
My front fender was black, as well as the rear plastics. They changed up the paint schemes so much that I'm not sure what's not right with yours. I think mine ('02) was the only year that they did the beak shape on the side fairings. All the other years were the "S" swoop for Suzuki or a winding road. Suzuki was really good with the Easter eggs. I liked the falcon shape of the headlight with the high beam on as well.

Is there supposed to be a bit of red filling in the upper black on the fairing - where the line of front mudguard runs into the fairing?

Nope nothing to do with the lower firing panels or mudguard.

Thanks mate Yes not being precut is a real let down, as you say cutting out can be difficult, it's the curved areas on the side firing panels that is the problem. I had to touch these areas up after removing them, which was very time consuming.

I know of a chap who's got one, plus German WW2 BMW R75 and a Zündapp KS 750, he's big into reenactment.

The nose firing shouldn't have the black area around the screen, I applied the wrong mask from the later model

Sorted now All the decals and clear coat is applied

Well that can't be right then if your questioning it. I thought the writing on the flaring decal was wrong way round.....not right then it must be a one piece decal. Originally I thought the pin on the fuel tank was wrong way around, but what do I know I don't build bikes.
