Was there an earlier Conqueror tank developed in about the same era as the Centurion? Seem to recollect seeing a prototype at Duxford, unless I have the name wrong!

Conqueror followed Centurion as an answer to the Soviet JS-3 heavy tank.

Wasn't the Conqueror originally intended to be a support tank to the existing Centurions much like the firefly's were used during WW2 ?

Not to the best of my knowledge - which isn't saying much I admit.
Centurion was meant to be the answer to the Panther/Tiger/King Tiger. Then at the victory parade in Berlin the Russians rolled out the JS-3 - which scared the crap out of the West. Hence the Conqueror heavy tank.
Thats my understanding - but as ever always open to correction.... :) :)

Ahh - seems I was at least partially right :)

"Despite its weight as a heavy tank, its mobility and speed was good enough for it to keep pace with the lighter medium Centurion Tanks it was tasked to provide anti-tank support for against the Soviet Joseph Stalin IS-3 heavy tank."

Interesting to note the designation of the main gun - L1A1. This is the same designation given to the 7.62mm SLR that replaced the Enfield Mk IV...... No prizes for guessing the cock-ups that caused.....

Guys, further to my earlier post, can anyone confirm if the subject of this kit is the tank at Duxford that I think may be a prototype Conqueror?

The tank museums Conqueror has the Mil Reg 40 BA 86 - the kit appears to be 03 08 72?? There aren't many Conquerors around now and the photos of Bovingtons one has differences in the nose at least. Possibly the one at Saumur was the basis??

That's a huge tank (even if it's not the best heavy tank) and a huge weathering work! 👍👏👏👏
