1960's Nuke Sub...

This seems an appropriate intro for what is to follow - as well as introducing the build subject itself....



And now the kit...



Its Doyusha's version of the Gerry Andeson submarine "Stingray" from the 1960's TV series of that name (not to be confused with the Corvette of the same name!). The unboxing - bear with me on this - first time I've tried filming myself work:



There isn't actually an awful lot to this kit - three sprues plus clear sprue plus electrics plus decals plus instructions:

As you can see - the first hurdle is the fact all the instructions are in Japanese - a language I know absolutely zero about.!! So hopefully Google Translate will be a bosom buddy here. :lol
The plan is to modify the rather basic and barren interior to look a bit more like the submarine in the series. maybes wapping the LED's for fibre optics. We shall see.
Second hurdle is there are NO paint instructions at all so it will be suck it and see colour-wise as we go.

Lesson learnt from this is find a better way to do filming than holding phone on in one hand whilst wielding a rather sharp knife the other!!

Yep - this was the one before "Thunderbirds". All creations of the late, great, Gerry Anderson and his "Super Marionation". I wanted to get hold of a kit of Thunderbird 2 as that was my favourite - but all the available ones were ridiculously small scale. A lesson learnt from the Tu-160 build is that I am getting too old to drop below 1/72.
The other kit I have that might appear in this build depending on the great upheaval is a 1/48 Eagle Transporter from the series "Space: 1999" - also one of Gerry Andersons creations but this one was with live actors.

Update time.... Before cutting plastic I thought it might be a good idea to workout what the paint colours are. I found some still photos on Pinterest of the original Stingray and used an app on my phone to get a comparison. Results are:

The penalities of youth!!! That means you also missed Fireball XL5 and Supercar!!

If the great upheaval is completed I will also make a start on the Eagle. Got some ideas there - diorama etc. but there are too many small parts to risk losing in the move process.

Now - back to Stingray, I have it in mind to scratch build an interior - que cries of"crazy", "insane" etc all of which would be accurate. I've got a week off work due to a dirty great hole in my ankle that won't heal and is a tad painful and today was the first time I've felt like getting the plastic out. The crew cabin is an enclosed module - top is the glazing, bottom is a semi solid floor. This is the floor:



Note the various holes. The biggie in the centre appears to be to allow turning the periscope to work the dive planes. The one in front of it is for a dome cover over the interior lighting - quite why you would want to illuminate a barren space is beyond me. The scallop on the side - I cannot find a logical reason for - but might find a use for in a revised lighting scenario. You can see what I mean in the instruction sheet:



The box art appears to show another light on the cabin roof in front of the periscope - but it is not shown in this diagram. The only lights are the cabin floor and the "contra-rotating eddy damper" on the stern!

This is how the module looks together (I haven't taken the glass off the sprue to stop scratches - the plastic is VERY soft).





My thoughts - now - are to dispense with the dive plane mechanism and move that central pillar in the cabin. That will let me close the roof off and free up the cabin floor for the central well and and the consoles around the side. I can also close off that hole for the bulb cover in the front floor which is roughly where Phones and Troy Tempests seats should go. So the next job - in progress as I type is to have a look through screen shots of the interior of the sub to get an idea of the layout and then of how to scratch build it.

Oooh nice choice ill be following this one as i have one in my kit sanctuary, im going to be outrageous and put some resin ejector seats in mine , and im scouring ebay for a 'fish' that pursued it in the show , good luck with the build !

Certainly going to try!! May not complete by the build deadline though as the Great Upheaval occurs in 2 weeks.
The upper hull is actually a separate piece thus:



The clear section fits inside it. An odd idea but it fits quite well!

Yes, we did. Used to watch it regularly for a time in Northwestern Ontario, around Thunder Bay. I was about 6, so 1972ish. They ran Stingray, Joe 90 and maybe Thunderbirds.
