Masking Tape is ripping off decals

Hi guys,

I hope you can help me. I just destroyed my second car kit as the masking tape was ripping off almost all my decals. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and it’s frustrating.

I try to paint the window frames and other parts of the body after I applied the decals.

I clear coated the body with the decals (Tamiya TS-13) and let it dry for 2 days.
The I sanded everything with Micromesh (6000-12000) and finally polished with the Tamiya compounds.

So I think I did. the correct steps. However, after all this steps the tape was peeling the decals. I’m using Tamiya masking tape.

Appreciate your advice

Thanks
Thomas

Thank you Francis. For my next kit I’m planning on using the Tamiya X22 acrylic clear coat. Hopefully it’s less hot.

I wreaked two car kits with clear coats like that
One the Tamiya clear, the other with mr hobby or something clear. The thinners you need to spray them make them too ‘hot’ for decals, paint and plastic IMHO.
The 2k clears are the way to go as they do not affect decals BUT, you have to be safe with them meaning a good spray booth or outside
I have used a Gravity Spain (not USA) and now Splash 2k

Once you do it, you will not go back to anything else, seriously

Just convinced the better half to airbrush in the apartment :-)
I have a good spray booth but I don’t want to overstretch it (yet)

Thank you though. Let’s see how it works with X22. If that doesn’t bring a good result I might try 2k
