Going to be an interesting build. How far are you going to take the engine detailing??

Not far, most of it is hidden away so not needed. Got a problem with engine fit atm...it's too wide. The engine mounting brackets are going to be files back a long way.

Not that shame !! Has I had said to you, I thought the engine has good amount of detail and it doesn't fit ?! :( Had the same problem once with an Eduard Bf109. Had to cut out the details of the engine and glue the exhausts stacks using platiscard instead of putting them on engine itself.

Nice start on the engine mate - shame about the fit issues though, that's something pretty fundamental for them to screw up.

Looking forward to comparing notes with the two builds :pop:

Thanks for all the support guys and really reaaaally sorry for confusing some of you....

My kit suffers a little from a good helping of fine flash and a little short shots on a couple of the corners.
Image
Image

I chopped out the offending bit and cemented some thin plastic card back in and although this pic doesn't show it. All cemented in with sprue goo and why it looks so messy.
Image
I used a burr on my drill to carve out the inner half moon where the prop coupler protrudes through.

Image
There is a fair gap or seam at the wing root and I'm not sure whether this is a feature of these aircraft or some sloppy work at Roden.
I shall have to go googling.

ATM continuing on building sub assemblies.
Image
I found the wheel build which has a cap to cover the axle neatly was too big so requires a fair amount of careful sanding. So easy to create a flat spot.

Next up will be fitting those sub assemblies and making sure the fuselage closes properly.
Merry Xmas and lots of :cheers2: :cheers2: :D :D

Ps....despite some small issues I'm actually enjoying this and don't think badly of this kit at all.

Yes it is any side ways pressure and it will collapse. Not going to do much to improve it, this is a testing of the waters kit....my first bi-plane.

Wow looking back at my posts or lack there of it's a bit embrassing...sorry guys.

Fuselage steps one and finial result
Image Image

I got the engine abut this far when I knocked it off the bench leaning over to the paint rack for another colour.
ImageImage
Sod landed right on the most fragile bit....Murphy's been about.
Any way replaced the handle with a brass rod and straightened the plastic up. After much time spent painting little details I banged her into the fuselage. Image
AND this is where things got interesting and rather heated.
Image

Like you I dunno how this is going to turn out. Clamps come off tomorrow.

cheers
Guys.

Thank you for your comfidence Kev you might want to reconsider that comment after seeing this pic.
All that clamping up was for nought as in my blindness and not really thinking too hard I had neglected to thread the guns into their firing ports. Naturally nothing fits well trying to shoe horn them together like that. So prise it all apart and do it properly. Actualy not that easy to seat it in proper if the guns are not algeined properly. They are pararell, but face down a bit and that's the kits fault this time.
When I was prising it apart it with a little cement came apart fairly easy......except the rear fuselage. I did a realy excelent job of fixing that together. and I used a little too much force......
Image

Its back in the clamps now and hopefully back on track.

Oh not good, I think you'll sort that fine with TET and tape. :th: Use a fair bit, get it to ooze into a nice little bead along the crack, once fully cured (12hrs) flatten off to contour, it will be invisible once painted :th: :pop:

Yep slap it on and carve it off

Plus that's pretty much fixed with a glue application and a tiny amount of filler at one end. The fuselage is actually quite thin and gluing the 2 halves together was fiddly.

All is well it's all patched up almost undetectable. What looks like a indentation is just a discoloration.
Image
I made a cushion.....woopeee...
Image
The landing undercarriage back in the day used bungy cords as a shock absorbing system. Simple stuff, but it worked lord knows why 747's went away from this great tech
Image
I've also resorted to pinning the wing struts as the attachment points looked a bit flimsy to me.
Image
AND making turnbuckles.
4mm tubing and 0.2mm brass covered copper wire all soldered.

finished product

cheers

Yes, The engine and frame work around it needed to be trimmed back. Even then I needed to clamp it from every angle to get it to close correctly.

Wow digger, I was surprised to see the poor mold quality. Nice save on the fuselage.

Perhaps they consider the flash, gaps, incomplete corner molds, and ill-fitting parts as features?

At least the internal parts for the cockpit and engine look like they are designed well.

Keep it up as this will indeed be worth it when completed.

I'm also surprise at the poor quality of the kit ! I struggle with mine because they're too much details and Digger struggles because of the poor quality of the kit. And I don't know for all of you, but the Roden kits where I live aren't that cheap to buy ; not that expensive but not cheap also. And it made me realize that may be I shouldn't buy the ones I had on my wishlist.

Strangely I'm not worried about the quality issues. I bought these kits cheap second hand and have a couple more in the stash and I'm thinking they will get built as the build hasn't been as frustrating as it might look.

It's been a good while since I've updated this....sorry guys.
Ok In the last week I've primed, base coated, added the tail guide, control wires for the tail, exhaust system and added the top wing.
Image
Image
It's not a lot, but it's done. The top coat od blue needs going over again , but I thought I might leave that until the rigging is done.
Those of you who have done rigging before ( not me ) will recognize that I'm doing it all wrong. I always do thing the hard way it seems I like reinventing the wheel.... :bash:
I couldn't figure a way to use the turn buckles and brass wire rigging and get it all tight. I'm still kind of in no manes land with this :? , but decided that pontificating over this forever isn't helping. So hoping it will come to me in a flash as I'm doing it.... I'm going to pretend I'm a engineer  and measure it out as I go....:

Had a slight hiccup.....One should watch where one puts hot soldering irons.
Image

All fixed now though and busy installing the rigging and stuffing up my paint job. I've been using a home, made jig to hold the craft. blocks of foam and tooth picks holding it all together.
<a href=" src="" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>
Image

It's not looking to bad, but surprising how much weight is in the fuselage and wings. The undercarriage is decidedly wobbly without the wire struts installed.

cheers guys
