Tamiya 1/20 Lola T93 Indy car

Post by barryf1fan »

Welp!! Finally got my model space set-up in my "play room". It's been a long time since I was able to work on a model much less post about it.

Image

So I decided to do this one for a friend that helped unload the U-Haul truck when my wife and I moved from Oklahoma to Florida. He's a big Nigel fan, and with this being a somewhat rare kit, decided to do this one for him. Had to order new decals from IndyCals and have used them before, so hopefully these will be great too.

Pics aren't that great - just started it really. Clipped everything off the "trees" and started cleaning, but was so pumped that I snapped a couple of pics (how old am I?? Snapped?!? Really... LOL!!)

And my trusty guard dog keeping watch on the door - although he's scared to death of thunder, and lightning, and rain, well, pretty much anything that isn't clear blue skies...

Thanks for looking in, and am Soooo looking forward to be able to get back at the bench to glue my fingers together.
:cheers2:

Got some primer down and painted some bits black, (sorry for the less-than stellar pics...) and first time using the pink Ultimate primer. Went down great, no problems whatsoever and very smooth. The car is gonna be black and white so will probably have to shoot gray primer where the white is, as I imagine the pink will not be the best for a white color - but anyhoo, wanted to try it out.

Hadn't used the airbrush in almost a year, and being a complete boob - or n00b - if you prefer, at using it, I was pleased that it went better than expected.
Here's a couple of shots - and again, nothing exciting (just to me as the primer turned out great)... OH! And first time using the Tamiya LP paints. That's what I shot the black with there (over the white Ultimate primer) and that paint is the p00p, if you haven't tried it. I will be phasing out all the acrylics I use for these, at least mostly (I have a literal crap-ton of the Tamiya X-series paints...).

[I'll try and do better in the future with the pics... just wasn't thinking]

Probably won't be much done the next couple of days as I was finally able to get a Playstation 5 - the things are just stupid to get... and will probably be playing games most the weekend.

Got the engine and rear of the car done up. Need to be a little more patient with my masking, but came out okay... not super happy with the colors but you won't see the engine once the cowling is installed on the car. Have painted up the brake discs and calipers and started on the seat (sorry, no pics...) and also laid down the black on the car. Next will be the TS-16 Pure White - have already decanted and hope to shoot it tonight. Will be able to start the decals soon and finish it up. Here's a couple of [not so great] pics I grabbed last night before heading to eat.

Masking in progress . . .

Thanks for looking, and hope to have more in the next few days, would like to start decals by the weekend.

Yes Baz! I've been trying to get this kit for a while now, Nige was my hero when I was a 10 yer old back in the day. They crop up on eBay every once in a while, I'll have to try a little harder to bag one.

Great start, that pink primer looks SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH

Thanks for looking in guys!! :hi: Appreciate the comments! :thumb1:

This kit has been pretty easy so far (it is a snap-tite kit after all) bar a couple of pieces that just broke. I mean, they just snapped! 'Course, the kit is about 30 years old and I have no idea how or where it's been stored all that time... other than that, this kit is actually typical Tamiya quality - albeit early 90's Tamiya quality. Having a good time with it and just trying to take my time, and as soon as I start rushing and thinking about getting more and more done, I walk away.

Did make some progress on the #5 Lola over the weekend... Was able to finish masking the pieces for the black/white paint scheme. And the white paint over the pink Ultimate primer turned out great. For the underside of the body pieces I used the Ultimate black primer, the stuff is great!
The white is decanted TS-26 Pure White, and the black is the LP-5 SGB, thinned per Paul's instructions.

Image

Image

Also got the tire decals on (still need to clear them...) and decided to try and use the kit transfer decals. They came out great and look really good. One thing I have noticed with the IndyCal decal set (on this kit anyway, wasn't the case on the Leyton House I did) is that for this kit, the decals are slightly larger than the kit decals. And by that, I don't mean like a different scale or anything, I mean literally just a teensy bit bigger than the kit ones.

Image

Also got the front and rear wing done.

Image

Image

Little mock-up of the body pieces...

Image

Need to finish the decals (the bulk of them to go...) and then clear it. Just hoping nothing else breaks, but don't have too many more pieces to finish it.
You can see in the last pic that I've made a start on the cockpit - it's pretty simple and I'm trying to spruce it up a bit. We'll see. LOL!!!

Thanks guys!! Looking to make a little more progress on it, but have family coming in on Tuesday (curse of now living 30 minutes from Disney World) and have a ton of C_R_A_P to do.

Been kinda "stupid" busy the last week or so... family came in, wife's car died, son had emergency surgery (he's okay :th: ) and also trying to work. But! Got a little time at the table.

worked on the dash (no pics) and started on the steering wheel... but more to do there.
Did get almost all the decals done - just need a couple more and then clear.

Appreciate the kind words guys! :cheers2:
It definitely has a couple of uh-oh's on it but that's par for the course for me. Pretty happy with how it's coming along, I just thought would've had it done by now... but life sometimes, right?

@Twokidsnosleep yes sir, this kit is ridiculous money now - it's like a Rossi MotoGP bike for some reason. They are old, but they're snap-tite kits so I can't figure why they are so much, except they are hard to find. I wish Tamiya would do the new IndyCar... there's only one chassis, so they could tool one model and just print the different decals. Guessing they don't have the license or something - but I would be all over those if they did'em.
