Panther G Late. Tamiya kit 35176 1/35

Post by rodders »

Hi All,
Can anyone help. I'm not an expert and have done the 1/35 Italeri Panther A(yes, the one with the zimmeritt panels :ooops: ). So my wife saved up some money and just before Modelzone shut i got Tamiya's kit 35176 Panther G Late. i've looked on Eduard's site and it lists zimmeritt in photo etch for it. Forgive the stupid question, does the Panther G have zimmeritt on it or is it because Tamiya has ommitted it from the kit. I seem to be building tanks with Zimmeritt at the moment as i'm now doing the Italeri 1/35 Tiger 1E with Zimmeritt as well and just want to build one without it on. Can i build it out of the box without putting zimmeritt on,
Thanks for any help.

I think on the G model you could get away without the zimmerit. I believe all tanks after September 1943 had zimmerit (the Ausf D was in production at this time) applied in the factory as standard, and a field order was given to add zimmerit to existing older models. However there are rumours a cease order was issued to stop putting zimmerit on due to problems with vehicle fires if the zimmerit was hit. So if your doing a late model Ausf G I don't see any reason why you couldn't do it "zimmeritless". I believe there are several museum examples of Gs with no zimmerit, so I say go for it!

hi, i asked my grandfather (he was a tank commander in ww2. panther and tiger2) at the end of the war we stopped adding zimmerit because the lack of ressources and because of it's effectiveness. our enemys simply didn't use magnetic hollow charges so it wasn't necessary at all! you can build the panther g definetely without zimmerit!

Wow, straight from the horses mouth! Now that is the kind of reference you want to have for a model!

Thank you so much. You can't beat a primary reference source.
Very much appreciated. :thumb2:

no problem! it's always interesting to talk with him about the war because he saw so much of it! poland, holland, france, chzech republic, belgium, italy, north africa, the baltics east prussia and russia! but a short phone call extends to a talk of over an hour :D he also always asks me about news from the wehrmacht (we are a military family) ... i told him 1 mio times that it's no longer the wehrmacht ... it's the bundeswehr nowadays :D

Andre, your Grandfather sounds a fascinating man. I love hearing about this sort of stuff and could listen for hours - nothing beats hearing it from a person that was actually there.

Hate to be "Captain Accuracy," but your question peaked my interest. Early Panther Gs did have zimmerit. The Tamiya Panther Gs are all late, sporting a debris guard and a chin on the mantlet. These were produced well after zimmerit coatings fell out of use in September 1944.

Hope this helps,

Russ.

PS: Now that would be a nice conversion. Early G with zimmerit. Wouldn't present too difficult a challenge to build. In fact there are a lot of odd ball conversions one can make with Gs, such as one with an A engine deck. Lots of fun :)

as others have said late panther G models the type with extended chin mantlets, and other differences such as raised fan houseing and the 20 or so steel wheeled type were typically Zimmerit free, according the references I have (I havn't been able to find any pictures of any in the books I have any way).
