Scrap/practice models

Hey all

I'm a complete newb to the hobby with absolute 0 experience of model kits and airbrushing so looking to build up skills and experience and start producing some nice looking kits.

Found the forum via the international scale modeller YouTube channel, more specifically through the 13 part modelling techniques videos which super super informative and crazy helpful.

Currently working on the tamiya mk1 spit so wish me luck. I need as much as can be given.

To build my skills and get some practice in I'd like some practice pieces. Wether it be scrap kits, spare parts or unwanted items.
I'll take anything that can be offered. So if you have anything no matter how big or small, good or bad condition I'dbe very very grateful please.

Facebook sale pages or car boot sales can be treasure troves, but usually you get what you pay for and buying cheap kits maybe even from less than stellar manufacturers can be a mine field. So much so it might even put you off modeling as a hobby forever. I would humbly suggest buying only Tamiya kits to start with use scalemates to check reviews. Build a couple of their kits then maybe start branching out to other makers. Italeri can be found cheap, stay away from smaller old soviet block manufacturers such as Mpm, Mirage, Icm, Zvedza,Eastern Express and the like. Scalemates will help out a lot here. The reason I say all this is because of details and especially fit can be a nightmare and can drive you mad. Best to try these when you have built a 10 or more kits. You didn't actually say what you prefer to build (maybe cars for one) or what scale. A lot of us find a scale we are comfortable with just so all the builds we do kind of match, but it isn't a rule.

Morning mate. Thanks for your helpful reply, especially with the kits to avoid.
There are soo many kit manufacturers out there and as a newb it's a bit of a minefield to know which are suitable and which are for pro level modellers.

I'm a engineer by trade so have a good grasp of how components fit together and the build side of things comes quite naturally to me.

Off the bat ive taken quite well to basic airbrushing. It's the finer and more skilled stuff I need to learn and practice at along with brush painting. Deffo need to learn how to brush paint, especially the small cockpit style stuff.

Mainly looking at building 1:48 military aircraft and have a dabble at cars and bikes in the future maybe.

Canopies, landing gear, wing roots and adding weight ( tail sitters) I would venture to say are the main problem area's.
Painting get a good brush paint for that work and another for air brushing and only buy what you need for the project on hand.
Plenty of good info on this site and scalemates for reviews and tracking down reboxing of kits. Most kits tooled after about 2004 improved markedly.
