Hi Everyone,

I havent been posting a lot about my builds lately but i decided to keep a threat on the project i just started. As the title says i started on Special Hobby's 1/72 Fouga CM-170 Magister. Its a small jet trainer developed in the 1950's. If you wanna know more about the plane here is the link to Wikipedia.

The plane has been used by a lot of country's, i am gonna build it as a Marineflieger(German Navy) version for with the decals are included in the kit.

This is what the box looks like.


I started work on the cockpit, cutting all the parts from the sprue, cleaning them up and glued some stuff togheter.


The seats looked a bit boring so i added some seatbelts made out of masking tape.


Here are all the cockpit parts ready for some primer.


I continued with cutting the fuselage halves from the sprues and cleaning them up as the needed the same interior color as the cockpit.


all the fuselage and intake parts ready for a primer coat. After filling the ejectorpin markings i found out it wasnt necesary as they wouldnt be visable in the closed fuselage.


Any tips or recomendations are always appreciated.

I made some more progress on the Fouga Cm-170 Magister, I primed the cockpit and insides of the fusalage. As they all had to be black i used Black Ultimate primer to save some time on painting and i think it gives a nice flat black color.





Next step was painting the seats and applying the instrument panel decals. followed with a grey drybrush to bring out the details a bit more. I am pretty happy how it turned out.



The air intakes where painted Aluminum and the exhaust received a "Burnt Iron" paint colour.



After painting i glued the intake and exhaust parts in place.

Thank you Garion, the detail of the kit is pretty good. There are some minor fit issues but i think they are easy to overcome.

Nice work on a more unusual subject - I remember the Patrouille de France flying these way back in the day but honestly didn't realise that any other air arms used them.

I finished the cockpit, all the parts fitted properly. After painting, applying the decals and a bit of drybrushing i sealed everything with a flat coat. After the flat coat i tried adding a glass look to the instruments by applying a little bit of gloss varnish over them. I am pretty happy how it all turned out altough the result isnt clearly visible on the pictures.







I am pretty happy with the result, i am not really sure how much with be visible after assembling.

Some more progress on my Fouga CM-170 Magister, the cockpit is glued into the fusalage and then the fusalage sides where glued togheter.





The fit was pretty good, just some seamlines that needed a little bit of filling.



I Filled the seamlines with sprue goo, wich filled everything up nicely.



After letting the sprue goo cure i sanded if smooth.



After sanding everything nice and smooth i had to restore the lost detail, panellines where rescribed with a sawblade. I made the small plates out of some plastic strip and glued them in place.

I made some more progress on my Fouga CM-170 Magister. I added some fishing weights to the nose and fixed them with some white glue. To prevent having a tail sitter.



Next up was cutting all the wing parts off the sprue and cleaning them up. In this kit you have the option for open or closed air brakes. I choose the later.



I glued the parts in place and painted them MR. Hobby H34 Pale Yellow.



While letting the paint dry i continued working on the fusalage and glued the nose and tail parts in place.



After that i added all the small parts like antenna's and air scoops.



followed by the tails. This is how she looks right now.

A very nice build for a plane which was one of the best of its class at its time.

I made some more progress on the Fouga Magister, I assembled the wings, the overal fit was pretty good. There where some small seams on the fuel tanks, i filled those with some sprue goo after letting that dry properly i sanded everything smooth and restored the panelline detail.

The wings fitted nicely into the fusalage. there where some small seams at the wing roots wich i filled with Vallejo plastic putty and cleaned up with a moisted cotton butt.



Next i glued the canopy's in place, here where also some small seams wich i filled with Vallejo plastic putty and cleaned up with a moisted cotton butt.



After letting the glue dry properly i masked off the canopy and cockpit with some tape. To make sure all the tape would stay in placed i brushed a coat of maskol over it.





Next up will be a primer coat.

Thanks, its pretty do able as long as you take your time.

I made some more progress on the Fouga Magister. First i sprayed a primer coat, for this i used Ultimate black primer.







After letting the primer dry properly i airbrushed a White basecoat on the tip tanks and horizontal stabilzers in preperation for the Dayglow finish. For the White i used Hataka A101





I painted the underside aswell, for this i used Mr Hobby H315 Gray airbrushed in thin coats to build up the finish.





There are still some colors to be applied so i will be painting for a little while.

A little update about the Fouga Magister at the end of 2022.

I masked off the entire underside to prevent overspray from the Dayglow.



After masking off the underside i airbrushed the Dayglow color. I find this a difficult color to airbrush as its pretty translucent. In the passed i used Vallejo paint but i never got good results with it. This time i used Hataka A194 "Luminous Orange". I sprayed multiple thin layers to build up the color and prevent any drips or spiders. In the end i managed to get a proper coverage and am pretty happy with the result.





To protect the Dayglow color on the tiptanks and horizontal stabilizers i masked them off.



After that i sprayed the first camouflage color, for this i used Mr Hobby Aqueous H340 "Field Green" as was mentioned in the instructions..

The dayglow and camouflage came out looking fantastic

Really nice progress since the last time I checked in - especially sorting out those fuselage seam lines; the paintwork really shows off how your work paid off there

The dayglow is a interesting colour and bright, it shows right through the masking tape.
This going to be interesting effect against the camo.

Thank you everybody, i am really happy with the result as in my opinion the dayglow color is a pain in the ass to airbrush properly.

I got my Fouga CM-170 Magister all painted up.

After letting the green camouflage color dry i masked it off, i outlined the masking with some 0.4mm tape and filled it up with some broader pieces of masking tape.



After completing the masking i painted the grey base color, for this i used Mr Hobby Aqueous H301 "gray".



I added some shadows and highlights to the gray. I made the shadows by adding some black to the base color, the highlights where made by adding some light gray to the base color. This is how it turned out.



I let the paint dry for a bit and then i removed all the masking tape. I have to say i am pretty happy with what came out from under the tape.





There where some small parts that needed to get some different colors. These where masked of and airbrushed. First the intakes recieved a red color.



Followed with some black and silver on the tail.



And some burned metal on the engine exhausts. The blad antenna behind the cockpit was painted with a brush.



I painted the lights in the tiptanks silver later in the build i will install some glasses over this wich i painted clear blue and red.



All the little bits recieved some paint aswell these are ready for final assembly.

Now its time for a gloss coat and some decals.

Paint looks good and the panel lines showing nicely adding interest.

Thanks, havent applied a wash or anything yet. The surface detail on the kit is verry nice out of the box.

Its been a couple of weeks sinds the last update, i managed to make some more progress on the Fouga Magister. Here is what i have been up to lately.

I sprayed a glosscoat in preperation for decalling, for this i used Mr. Color GX100. I have good experiances with this gloss varnish, its verry glossy and cures really hard. It is even possible to polish it with a wet sandpaper, i never experianced any issues with damagin my paint coat during decalling or weathering with this gloss varnish.


After letting the gloss varnish dry it was time to start decalling.


The kit supplied decals are nice and thin and comform perfectly to the surface detail with some Microscale set and sol.


After finishing the decals i sprayed a second coat of Mr. Color GX100 to protect them for weathering.


The wheeldoors and landinggear where also sprayed with a glosscoat after wich i applied a "Dark brown" panelliner wash, for this i used a Tamiya one.


The wash was cleaned up with a cotton bud, brush and some oderless thinner.


Next up was weatherin the bottom part of the Fouga Magister, here i applied a Ammo Mig "Dark Grey" panelline wash.


This was also cleaned up with a cotton bud, brush and some oderless thinner.


Lastly it was time to weather the top part of the model, here i used a Tamiya "black" panelliner wash.


After cleaning it up it looked like this.


After letting everything dry for a bit it was time to assemble the last small parts like the landinggear before they where added to the model.


This is how it all lookes assembled.


In the mean while i sprayed a flat varnish and finished the kit. I will try to shoot some end result pics soon and share them here.

Decals always bring a kit to life a little bit more but in this case they're just adding to the stunning paintwork you've already laid down.

I finished my special hobby Fouga CM-170 Magister and took some "final result" photo's. I have to say it was a fun build, the overall fit of the kit was pretty good, there where some small parts that needed some extra attention but nothing that couldnt be overcome. Overall i am pretty happy how she turned out, the only part i could have given a bit more attention is the canopy and the fit isnt perfect with some more care it would have looked better. I wonder what you guys think of here so here are the pics.
