Whippet 1/35 by Meng

A WW1 British early light tank.

The road wheels have a tricky distribution given there is 2 different types and the instructions don't make it exactly clear.

My fault I needed all those pegs as I forgot to add the mud slides and it required me to be forceful. The other side was fine.

I've only got one track set to finish, guns to do and she's all built.

At least half of those slab sides were one piece that had a line through the mold so it needed to be bent by the builder carefully and only once. Marvellous bit of engineering as they all came together with no gaps or over laps.
Might be this painters nightmare all those nooks and crannies...

Looks good Digger. Those little Whippets were quite nippy for their time and, the story goes, gave Hans Guderian the basis of his ideas on panzer warfare.

Right now the tracks are giving me a issue. They are the click together type, which they do. However they also fall apart.
So how do I proceed painting them, atm I have them stretched out in a straight line all glued up. With the idea when the time comes I will just apply some tet to soften them and wrap them around. Painting them before I do that is the idea I was pursuing. I can just mask where the drive sprockets work on the track. Should work unless the tet leaks through the links and stuffs up the paint....

Sounds a good plan. I had similar issues with an Italeri BMP-1 that had a click together system. The instruction had you make the tracks in 4 groups:
* The ground section,
* The return section,
* The section that linked the two around the drive sprocket,
* The section that linked the idler sprocket.
Perhaps you could do something similar? Minimises the risk of the tet damaging the paint....

Just a word of warning. If you use TET on a visible painted surface, IT WILL damage your paintwork. I'd strongly consider adding the tracks to the tank and painting afterwards.

Certainly an interesting subject. I seem to remember seeing a video on the Whippet by David Fletcher. Quite the storied combat history. Out of curiosity, what's the livery going to look like?

I really prefer the Whippet than the Mark family, only missing a turret and it looks so modern! Very good build, the paint is perfect!

I have a question about those horrible tracks. Did you use the number Meng said to use or add one extra link. I found I had to really stretch the links even then I am .05mm short and if I add a extra link they are way too lose and sloppy...

Digger, you never cease to amaze me with your selection of kit builds. Seems by the photos that you managed to fully cover the kit as you were initially concerned about the davits and crannies. Weathering this should be real fun.

This is looking really nice so far.

Only the tracks causing a bit of a issue. All falling apart and now seem to be slightly short. However I've cheated with CA and the tracks don't quite close, but it's hard to pick with a casual glance. I've extra links, but using even only one extra makes it look horrible as the links are so large.
Weathering is going to be fairly light this time. No mud, a touch of light rust, muffler and this time some oil dot fading in a restrained manner. Well that's the plan today. It will have to wait until I come back as I'm off again for 5 days. My niece is getting married 2 days to get there and 2 days to get back ...stupid I know.

I went back and reread your build thread (so good) and it was 4 yrs ago so your memory isn't as bad as you think. You got your tracks to fit, but mine must be riding up the sprockets slightly.
It took me ages to set all 20 cable hooks in place and I was so careful not to bend any. Two days later I forgot and bent 3

Gloss coated, pin washed and working on the tracks at the moment having just added a light rust wash.

Here it is fella's all done. I've just been doing a bit occasionally and it kind of sneaks up on ya then you step back and say it's DONE !
I went a little heavier on the weathering than I intended. Mainly because I didn't like it and I kept adding bits.

you know that here, whippets used to be the favorites cookies for kids when I was one or when my parents were !

Didn't like them but still they were quite popular. Marshmallow cream dip in chocolate

Thanks for the kindness...Yes it didn't really take too long to build and it all mostly went together pretty well.
The cookies sound a bit like snowballs. Thin biscuit base, marshmallow with a thin layer of milk chocolate.....pretty damn nice. I'm a bit like the
cookie monster of old...

Superb result. I dont think the weathering is overdone at all. It looks awesome. Its great that it hasnt just made the tank darker, the contrast with the insignia marking and the main hull color still look really metallic and realistic.

I love it.

In service, in the field, they used to collect a lot of muck so you may well have got the weathering off pat for active service as opposed to parade ground!!

I'm always partial to WW1, but don't have a lot in my stash.
Maybe 2 or 3 more tanks and 3 armoured cars from that era.
I am painting a m114 atm and a old Tamiya Jackson, but after that I'm not sure what to build.
