After hosting the Emmys, Jimmy Kimmel showed this pic of some famous guys at a model store in Burbank while interviewing a director Guillermo del Toro

JJ Abrams (from Star Trek), Steven Speilberg and Guillermo del Toro (the director for Pinocchino)
At 6:40 in the video they discuss the visit to a model shop and the story behind it

It is such a wonderful pastime to model and I am happy to hear a guy who has made my heros come to life on the silver screen makes models for a hobby. Personally I don't tell many outside the internet groups that I model as the backlash and nerd criticism is ridiculous, so I just avoid.

for example:
Kimmel continues to say "this is crazy".... Funny I guess you are supposed to be depressed and binge drinking while snorting coke all the time when you are a big ass celebrity.
He even asks Guillermo if he has to pay for the models himself...huh?

Thoughts?

Im not surprised at the creative guys doing modelling. Many also do photography as a hobby, and other creative side projects. George Lucas had all those models built for star wars. I bet he was loving every minute of it. Im sure as a kid these guys were fuelling their imagination with model building.

Thanks for the story.

If you watch any of the 'making of' stuff from Raiders of the Lost Ark, he built a model of the entire Tannis desert camp so he could work out his shots.

I like Kimmel, perhaps he's just coming from the angle of how on earth do you find the time.

As for telling people I build models, I have no problem with that. Its not something I would tend to lead with but once I know someone and they say, how was your weekend, my reply is, great, thanks, I watched a load of sport and got some good bench time in on my hobby. Cue next question and most people show genuine interest. I'm also quite self-depreciating and am quite happy to embrace my tinge of nerdyness! I often refer to a perfect weekend as a 'Nerdgasm'.

If people see it as a way to have a pop at me then those people are worthless and their opinions mean sh*t to me anyway.

The hobby and the UK's gun laws mean the public are safer so its a win win for everyone

Here's another one. Rod Stewart has completed his model railway after 26 years of work. Truly EPIC

Wouldn't you just love to see Guillermo del Toro's horror builds?

Adam Savage ex host of Mythbusters is a modeller, and has some good stuff on his YouTube channel.

James May, ex Top Gear.

Al Murray, Comedian.

There’s also a guy on YouTube who was an animator for Aardman (Wallace and Gromit) who posts stop motion videos of the kits appearing to build themselves. His latest is a Border Models Lanc.

Have just finished reading a book about one of the first female tour managers of rock/pop groups and she mentions that when managing Motorhead, she went to see Lemmy (Singer/Bassist) and he was sitting at his kitchen table building an airfix spitfire.🀘🏻🀘🏻🀘🏻
