I'm wondering if there is a resource that would help me find out the size of various scratch-built items would be at scale. Essentially, I have no idea of the dimensions of a fuel barrel at full scale, so if I want to scratch build one, how big should it be at 1/24, 1/48 etc? It's too expensive to buy aftermarket stuff to use, so I'd rather take the time to learn to scratch build but I realized today that I have no idea about actual sizes of these items.

If you have any suggestions, I'd very much appreciate some feedback!

There are a couple of Apps available nowadays dude to help with the scale thing..
Model scaler from woodland scenics and Imodelkit from iTunes should help you out.

iModelKit is a good app one of the sections is scaling so you could use that but for the size of the real items I guess you could research on the web, I'm sure there are some sites with dimensions of standard army crates etc

Thanks, guys! Hopefully I can find Android versions of them - I'm not an Apple guy - but my wife is, so at the very least I can pinch her phone!

Come on guys you don't need an app, do the maths in your head. Its easy.

Look here is an example, all you have to do to convert 3.5 feet into 1/72 scale is use this easy to learn formula.

x=($6/e*2)-(y+z)+5.700-(100/3)+72

See its simple and works for every scale now put those gadgets away .....

I found an app that allows you to search for a colour and it gives you the equivalent colour from other brands of paint, if one exists. Nice.

I'm still trying to find some kind of resource that charts the physical dimensions of some common objects. So far I have found a website where you can buy resin parts and some of the items have dimensions, so I can work out scale from that. Maybe I will create a spreadsheet of what I find and then share it for all to use and add to if desired.

Let's say you want to scratch build an object that's 2 feet wide in 1/35 scale. First, convert to inches; 2x12=24, then divide by 35, 24/35= .6857 inches. Works the same in metric: ? meters x 100 = centimeters or ? meters x 1000 = millimeters; then divide by 35 to get 1/35 scale. So an object 1 meter wide is 100 cm / 35 = 2.8571 cm or 28.571 mm. Round your number up or down if you use a ruler to build instead of calipers.

Found a conversion app for computers --- I don't now, & never will own a "smart" phone. Couldn't read the screen for most things if I did, lol!

You can google the size of various objects to find the 1:1 size.

I would approach the problem by trying to `buy` the item online and hope to hit somewhere that provides dimensions, even if just for shipping.
Tried to find a jerry can and bingo ... a 20L Jerry Can is 468mm high X 345mm X 165mm
after that the online scale converters do the rest.
