Medieval European Cog (Kogge), built around 1350. Scale 1: 87
Scratch built, three-ply wood inner frame covered with small planks of mahogany veneer.

I am new here on the forum and built several shipmodels, all of scratch and always made of wood, mostly of pear wood. You will find some of my models and other items on my website www.constantwillems.nl

I built this model this year. It is on vieuw at an exhibition in the main museum in my hometown of Zutphen, where it still can be seen as a part of an exhibition of the Hanseatic-League (1250-1500).

I examined the history of ships like these and made use of the publication of a Dutch archeologist Karel Vlierman; “Cogs, small cogs and boats”. This model was accurately built on the basis of the plans which had been drawn after the excavation of the wreck of a Cog near the town of Nijkerk (nl). A lot was found of the original ship, reconstruction of the hull was no problem. Although nothing was found of the mast, the sail and the rigging, it was possible to reconstruct these items. By a close exhamination and by the help of some specialists, I discovered that most of the missing parts were to be seen on old town-seals an original medieval drawings.
