1:12 Enzo Ferrari WIP

Hello, I am new to the modeling forum and am a little out of touch with forum practices, so forgive me until I get back into the swing of things.

For a little introduction. I have been an off and on again modeler for most of my life however, I was never very good at it. I expect that in my more earlier years, I had a complete and utter lack of not only skill, but patience.

I had bought this 1:12 scale Enzo Ferrari when I was in my early 20's and took a crack at building it... I absolutely destroyed most of what I was trying to do at the time, the parts I painted were full of dust. Everything I glued was absolutely caked in Loctite superglue, the PE details I tried to add were poorly bent, etc, etc. I was terrible. Thankfully, I had the sense to just put it back in the box an tote it around for a little over 10 years, until I decided that I may be patient enough to take on the challenge and satisfy my undiagnosed OCD.

While I got back into the swing of things, I had to resupply my collection of modeling tools and supplies... This stuff has gotten EXPENSIVE!!

So, now to opening the box... I had to strip all prior attempts from the monocoque... not fun with all of the superglue.



To add to the realism of the car, I'd cut off both the front chassis, and the engine cradle. From the engine cradle, there are supports that mount the exhaust and rear bumper cover. I'd cut those off as well and added some styrene brackets with weld lines. I'd also cut off the bell crank and shock mount and added some weld lines then painted them with metallic gray as per the cars original color.






There is plenty more to share, but I'll need to update the pictures on my Flickr account when I get home from work.

As I'm sure you'll notice, the mockup engine in the cradle is not the original engine from the kit. While working on the original last year, I'd absolutely despised the lack of detail and inaccuracies provided. Over the last winter, I'd taken up some 3D modeling and spent close to 500 hours digging up resources and reference pictures to scale and model a more accurate engine and transmission. I'll add more details.and pictures on this a little later on as well.

This is The Tamiya kit. Thank you, I'll add some more details on the engine and 3D printed parts that I've designed.

It definitely turned into a disaster. I think the recovery has taken a good potion of the time put into the build.

I have made some good progress and made a couple of changes to the engine cradle.

So far, I have completed skinning the monocoque with the Scale Motorsports carbon fiber and did a coat of clear lacquer.




After finishing the carbon and clear coat, I added some leather to the rear firewall. I still have to do a bit of trimming, but am waiting on the adhesive to set a little more to keep it in place.





Here is a shot of my stencil work and storage, I found it handy to keep it on a spare sheet of styrene.




I also finished up on the detail set for the suspension. Rather than using superglue on the coil adjusters, I chose to use solder to keep the parts together, I think it turned out quite well! When the paint is fully set, I will get the 3,000 grit paper and polishing compound out for the pistons to give a more realistic look.



and last, but not least, the front frame has been reattached and some detail bolts added.

As per the request, here are some shots of the 3D printed engine that I'd designed. I chose to do this for the sake that I not only nearly ruined the original engine, but I wasn't at all happy with the detail. Every little nut, bolt, and part are separate items for a total of somewhere in the ballpark of 1,200 pieces, including hardware to assemble.




The engine has a full functioning rotating assembly.

And, just a testament to the level of detail, copper windings in the alternator.

Your a brave man cutting the front and rear frame off, but fair play you have knocked it out the park !
After the three or four years the pain has just about subsided so i'll tag along if you dont mind

Thank you! Your Enzo build was actually a huge motivator for me back in the day when I was "trying" to go along with mine. I couldn't even come close to your level of quality lol.

Here's a bit more progress, I wasn't fond of how poorly my scratch modified original brakes were coming along, so I decided to take an evening and just design a whole new set, along with knuckles, ball joints, and a few other little doodads to help with some detail.









I was a little worried that the ball joints were going to be too small for the holes in the control arms, but it turned out that they're too big, so I'll have to massage one or the other to get them to fit snugly and properly.

I'm pleased it was of some use to you. It was far from perfect but i was pleased overall with it.

Loving the detail on the calipers and the seperate pads.......hope they're genuine ferodo lol

Many apologies for having been MIA for the past couple of years. I am still alive, and have been slowly plucking away at the Enzo.

Where to start... I continually found myself unhappy with the amount of detail with the rear subframe and ultimately chose to 3D model and print out a new one. Keeping these items in scale to the original monocoque was a huge challenge and took a few remodels and reprints. Luckily I managed to get it dialed in enough to keep the body lines accurate.

I was also very unhappy with the clear lacquer that I'd used and chose to use some Zero Paints 2K clear over everything and went especially thick over all of the carbon fiber to seem as though it was resin like.

For now though, the body work was completed and I managed to get it all done in Rosso Red and used the same Zero Paints 2K clear to finish it off.

Ill hopefully have some more pictures of the redone carbon parts sooner than later.

I've been managing to make some good progress on this project. At this rate, I might see the end of it by the time summer rolls around.

So far, body work is nearing its end, ive lined the more exposed inner panels with carbon and have begun the endless wet sand and polish stage. I've also started dry fitting some parts to make sure that others will fit properly.

When all of this bodywork is complete, I can begin building the final engine

I've managed to get quite a lot done over the past couple of weeks. My ideas of excessive detail are getting a little out of hand.

Enjoy some miniature wiring harnesses and a nearly complete engine.
