1/24 Pagani Huayra - Aoshimi w/ Aoshima detail up set

Post by cor »

Hi all. I havent been posting much for a while, but I've been doing a lot of modelling.

1/24 cars are not normally my ideal kit, but sometimes I like to give them a go, especially if there is a lot of detail.
This kit was a very complicated model, but the end result is very nice. The Aoshima detail up set of pe, aluminium exhausts, and metallic stickers was a great addition.

Nice kit and fantastic modeling skills. The clean work, fine details and textures, carbon and paint make this appear able to hop in, turn the key, and drive away. Pagani's have always been a very artful designed car and your model captures it in perfect scale splendor, great job!
On the table or recently completed:

1/18 AV8-B Harrier - WIP
1/35 Churchill AVRE with SBG Bridge Diorama - DONE
75mm BMW R75 WW2 motorcycle with rider - DONE

Thank you
No photos of it but I'll describe it - it is very basic

One piece of large white card as the horizontal base
Another piece of large white card behind it as the vertical backdrop
Sun as light source - so position the model for the sun to light up the main area you want revealed.
camera - crappy old samsung phone - it doesnt matter what camera you use, the white background is the key.

Im a photographer, so I like to make sure that the white base and backdrop remove any distractions. You dont need a fancy setup, just a clean backdrop and concentrate on framing the subject, which is the main thing, finding the best angle to show off your model.

Perhaps I should also mention a few other things about the photos that might help you. The background and lighting are pretty basic to achieve, using the sun, whether full sun or cloudy day, does not matter, either will be good. What helps a lot is how you set the cameras exposure, how you process the image, and also how you set the angles which you take the model in - ie how you frame each shot, which is the real art of photography.

When taking the photo on the phone I pushed the exposure up a lot, almost to the max, to give the shadows plenty of detail, otherwise the phone exposes for the large white background to be neutral grey, and the images will come out too dark, especially in the shadows, which will be totally black. To do this, you will probably have to put your phone camera on 'pro' mode, or some such thing so you can control the features of the camera.

Another way to get detail in the shadow and highlight is to set the phone to HDR mode so that there would be plenty of detail in the shadow and highlight areas.

Then I worked on the photo using photoshop lite, free phone app by adobe - basically a mini version of photoshop, to reduce any highlight blowout (overexposure), bring more shadow detail out (lighten the blacks), and then added a bit of contrast and clarity for the final pop. I also crop the image nice and tight to bring the viewing focus onto the subject.

If you have any questions about photographing your models I will be happy to help.

Thank you for that reply! I understand almost everything except for the post processing you describe. Is this something you do on every WIP-pictures aswell? Sounds like it takes alot of time! Ive constructed a simple lightbox and will try your method of maxing the exposure next time!

I only do the post processing on the final reveal photos. The wip photos are just snapshots to show the work because yes, it takes a bit of time.

If you want your photos to be better, you really do need to do some kind of editing / post processing. Most phones have pretty good software built in to do editing - lightening the shadows and toning down the highlights. Its necessary if you want to improve the final quality of your images. Even just bumping up the contrast can make a boring photo look punchier.

Cheers! I posted my final reveal of the A-Wing in the gallery section now. I edited the lighting somewhat in the built in tool of my iPhone. If you have any feedback on it, it would be helpful! :welcome:
