Meng Type VII U-Boat

Post by aur0ra145 »

Gents, I bring to you my addition for this years egg build. Meng has made an eggcellent representation of a Type VII U-Boat. The parts appear to be press together and have a few different options for decals. Haven't made up my mind if I'll stick with a traditional paint scheme or go crazy with Easter themes.

Messing around in photoshop a bit and came up with this as a rough guide.

Got the base colors down. The hull will need to be masked for the pink part. I can do that sometime tomorrow hopefully. The accessories will either be hand painted or take up Easter themes. A carrot for the canon sounds like a fun idea too.

A little masking to start.

Looks like it came out pretty well. I think I'll go with a carrot theme for the periscopes. Haven't decided on the AA and deck gun schemes. I will say the Army Painter Warpaints Air spray really well. I'm impressed with them so far. They behave much more consistently than Vallejo Model Air and are easier to clean up.

The side rails have a pretty neat way of installing. They don't take fine motor skills to put together and look nice to boot.

    Image

Went with the lighter blue deck color, I think it compliments well without being too bright and distracting.

    Image

Also did quiet a bit of painting on the smaller bits. The carrot periscopes will look decent when it's all said and done.

Got the side bubble things masked off. I looked up what they're actually called and all I could come up with is a "Saddle Tank." I've never heard of them referred to that way. Maybe one of ya'll know the proper name?

    Image

I had some Vallejo Game Air 72.732 Escorpena Green laying around and decided to go with it after a few paint tests with other green colors. The color came our really well.

    Image

Upon almost immediately removing the masks I did scrape off some of the wet paint. It's got a nice worn/uneven look that I think most egg dying attempts seem to have. I like it! When I go with a neon green for the stripes it should look great!

Comparison to the guide picture looks nearly spot on.

    Image

As for the eggs on the hull. I'm between masking and spraying, free handing or trying to create a stamp of sorts for the base color. That's a bit in the future so I'll egg it over for a few days.

Maybe go for self-printed waterslide decals for the eggs??

Not bad idea. I do have the decal paper available. Last time they didn't turn out very well, though it's most likely user error.

What I experimented with today is using masking tape as a stick-on decal. It takes the paint fine, just if you must apply any pressure to the tape with a fine edge, it flakes off. Sooo, I may try putting a clear coat over the paint on the tape and see where that leaves me.

Originally I freehanded the masking tape eggs. The wife has a Cricut which I'll use to cut out perfect eggs if I'm able to figure out the flaking problem.

Additionally I airbrushed the deck gun. The breach block will get painted by hand after it dries.

The masking tape, while fragile, did the trick. I'm please with the result!
