Looks like the Red Baron will have two entries (so far). I am building the Suyata version with the figure.



For an egg kit, there is quite a bit of plastic in the box. It is all molded very well and, in some places, pre-painted.



It also comes with two fuselage shells to show the interior cage.



I don't care for translucent parts that aren't supposed to be so. I will use the regular part, because the plastic feels better and I don't want any paint to react differently. The problem is that the white band they have pre-painted is very thick so I sanded it down and finished with a Ultimate buffer.



The tailpiece is also pre-painted, but it won't cause a problem because of how it is separated from the plane. I feared the tail breaking off, so I used a thin scribing tool and removed it myself.



I have cleaned up the the wing parts and will prime in Stynylrez pink.

Fun build! I did this one a few years ago and it was a joy to assemble.

I ran into a bit of a snag yesterday. I glued up the wing halves in preparation for priming and found a couple of issues. I sanded down the sprue gates too aggressively before assembly, and when I joined the two halves, the edges no longer lined up correctly. I am experimenting with a UV-reactive auto-body filler. The first use is promising. The second issue is the trailing edge of the wings doesn't close up precisely. Since the scalloped edge is a prominent feature, I needed to correct it. I glued up the wings with Revell Contacta as I felt it was a better cement for two flat surfaces. I used many clamps for a good bond. I then used a small drum sander on my Foredom rotary tool and sanded the scalloped edges. Once they were roughed in, I cleaned up the edges with sanding sponges and a coat of Tamiya Quick Drying Extra Thin. They now look like a single piece of plastic!

The UV test was a mixed bag. I bought a tube of UV putty last year and just now used it.

It works great, but the tube was 80% hardened when I opened it for the first time.

The product page states that it has a 12-month shelf life. I used it about 11 months after I bought it. What I don't know is how long it sat in Amazon's warehouse before they shipped it to me. It is a significant amount in the tube for $20, so it may be worthwhile to try again. It sure was nice to sand a seam less than a minute after applying the putty!

I have been doing a little more work on my egg plane. The first update is a dud. I wanted to drill out the heat shield on the Spandau machine guns. My hands are not steady enough and the holes are too rough. I have found a 3D file and will print some better guns.



I got the engine painted up. I actually decided to use the kit paint on the main engine halves but painted the other parts in assorted lacquers.



I primed the wood parts using a "light flesh" primer from Stynylrez.



I then used a "Grainer" brush and streaked on some Vallejo Air Mahogany.



I finished them off with some Tamiya Clear Orange.



As par for the course, I forgot the prop.

I did some detail painting and simple weathering on the wooden parts.



The inner frame was painted up and detailed with some smaller kit parts. Not much of this will be visible, though.





The engine got some weathering and was mounted to the inner frame. I also went back and painted the prop temporarily installed on the engine.



One thing to note is that the parts fit VERY tightly. If you paint them, you will also have to scrape off paint to get the pieces to fit.

I couldn’t move forward until I got the guns attached. My printer decided to quit working so a new one got ordered. I now have machine guns to paint!

I got all of the red parts primed in Ultimate pink.



Pro Tip #1. If you are running low on primer you can use Pepto Bismol.

Pro Tip #2. I often lie for comedic effect.
