Sheild Gate: Rogue One

Well my stuff has arrived and I am organizing and planning the build




This is the entry gate to the planet Scarif from Rogue one.
It is a bit of a big diorama project effort and I am hoping to pull off something kinda cool

The modelling supplies so far

BANDAI 1:144 X Wing Fighter



Shapeways 3D printed Sheild gate, cost me an arm and a leg plus a left nut. The print is meh but acceptable.









It is messy and dusty so left it in the bag. Will blow it off into the filters of my spray booth

I blew off the printing dust from the gate…I could see there was some from the ziplock plastic bag it came in
So took the airbrush in the fume hood and blasted away those resin bits
Then, well out came the primer





Little base layer to get things started. Lots of potential for panels and seams and weather and such on this.
It is going to look cool

Just one note of caution, its Scarif, not Sharif. You've triggered my inner rivet counter and I apologise on its behalf

Yes I didn't pick that either I'm finding it hard to tie the yellow submarine in there though.
This could be a freaky huge diorama...

Yes I noticed how things have dropped down a notch. If Neil stopped posting we would fall off the map. There is only about 6 or 8 regular posters , but a lot of sightseers who either a bit scared to post or can't be bothered. Bit of a shame because forums have a lot to offer in a more structured way than FB does.

Light Layer of grey Ultimate primer, light layer of Tamiya fine white primer on top…..gives the blue grey white effect
Then some aluminum brushing in the metal lattice supports.
You can see how I have more or less white over the grey in parts
It will dry brush for details as well later





This is fun stuff adding in layers. Can’t wait to black wash and then weather things even more

Cracking work. That gate has got so much detail on it but dont get it too dirty. Those pesky imperials were sticklers for keeping their hardware clean, not like those low down rebel scum!

Back to David’s comment about not too dirty….he is dead on
I tested some panel liners on the backside, where I anticipate minimal viewage
Tamiya panel liners…nope too thin too runny


An oil pen from AK….it is brown, doesn’t look right


My black magic flat wash…this one will do




I will have to go in and highlight the high spots a bit more ála David to keep things Imperial Spic and span

More Shield Gate Shenanigans
White panel line highlights and some grey shadows. Then a gloss clear Future prior to doing panel lines



I found a diorama by a guy who made the two destroyers colliding and then crashing the gate.
Unreal work, especially the round glass back lit base that looks like the planet. Impressive

It is funny the first research research picture shows a red unit X wing…two of those crashed into the gate when they closed the orifice.
Blue leader and four of his squadron plus a couple Y wings made it through the gate and down to the surface of Scarif.
So I will make my X wings part of the Blue Squadron



Finishing off the gate washes. Bit of cleanup and tidy to do still


Have a blue 1/72 X wing, she is a bit big and of the wrong era, but you get the idea




Next is construction of the Bandai 1/144 Blue X wing
Maybe 3D print an even smaller scale X Wing through the gate already
Ordered some stuff for the planet and the base

Happy Father’s Day to the dads out there…got left alone to model for Sunday afternoon

Bandai X Wing assembly. Super easy excellent engineering just follow the directions





Then a prime in grey Ultimate



And a special Star Wars off white Tamiya flat white + grey + MLT I had mixed up previously


So we are looking to do Blue Leader like dis

Onwards and forewords. I got two 12” clear acrylic disks. These will form the planet
Idea is to heat it and drape it over a metal bowl to give it some shape. Possibly using my wife’s oven or maybe the barbecue
Also got some acrylic sticks to act as stand offs and support the gate

Painting up the X Wings for the attack.
Bandai 1/144 kit, not really any cement needed fit is perfect

This larger 1/144 is going to be above the gate and I am going to 3D print two smaller X wings going through the gate
So I have made this X Wing as Blue 3 since the Blue leader (Antoc Merrick) and his wingman blue 2 should be first through the gate
Have some blue insignias to paint still and then clear this X Wing and weather her up a bit

3D print worked out ok….lost the blasters, but expected that
In the slicing program I can dial in the X,y and z dimensions as individual or linked ; these were 20cm X and then mated the other dimensions to match







They should be fun to paint so small

Last couple of days summer holiday at the mountain.
My son came up yesterday to mountain bike and brought some Amazon order stuff…funnily I had another Bandai X Wing coming
So I assembled a model at the kitchen table for the first time in likely 50 yrs while my wife made us lunch.



Had weird flashback to childhood of having a model , puzzle or action figures to occupy me while mom did mom stuff.




I was well behaved so I got some fresh blueberries too

Kind of boring honestly.
It is more theoretical vs practical, not a ton of examples in projects minimal small photos
I am not all the way through it yet front to back, but have been skipping around so maybe it will pick up

Speaking of reviews are you taking the small portable AB and hand held compressor to the lodge for some paint work when away from home ?
