Just started the venerable Airfix release of the Sepecat Jaguar. This release is dated 1989

The build.
First step is the - somewhat sparse - cockpit!


The pilot figure is basic but it is an old kit. Paints up reasonably well though but I'm the first to.admit my figure painting skills remain dire!!

Next step is the intakes on each fuselage half - which is where the age of the kit really becomes apparent with the parts fit. First use of filler and its not going to be the last....


Then the fuselage haves were joined. There was a fair amount of flash on one side that needed trimming first. As can be seen - a fair amount of clamping was required to join the halves and I suspect this one is going to turn into a filller queen!!




Lastly for this one - the decals are past their best, the covering paper is stuck to the sheet so I suspect I'm going to need to find replacements!

Progressing on.... The fuselage has the wings, tail planes, nose and tail cones on. And the filler.... LOTS of filler......




Ventral pod and the alternate bomb loads are done, needing sanding - esp. the pod which also needed filling...


This release must have been at Airfix's low times - one half of the bomb casings should have 2 holes to fit the hard points. "Should" was the operative word. Two of them had a solid plug where the hole should have been necessitating the plug to be cut out and the hole drilled. Hopefully I got them in the right place.

A days solid filling and sanding - and filling and sanding has progressed the build this far. Everything has a coat of Ultimate Grey primer.

Probably a little bit longer for me as I remember this one as a new release. I used to go to a little shop in Ilford when I had saved enough money to get a model and as I was a regular the shopkeeer had put one aside for me. That would have been 1970 so nigh on 53.5 years ago......

Anyways - the result of todays works. Undersides coated in Light Aircraft Grey using Hataka Blue Line paints amd a 3mm flat brush. Payload has had 2 coats of Camouflage Beige - also Hataka. Wheel wells, undercarriage legs and air brake internals all done with Tamiya Flat Aluminium.




And Dark Sea Grey applied all over:


Decals remain an issue - I found a set on eBay and am bidding for them. Hopefilly I'll be lucky.

Cross my fingers you'll be successfull.
The build looks really good.

I did the 1/48 Revell.which is a rebox of the Airfix kit from the 90s. Even given the more recent tooling, it was NOT the greatest fitting thing. I can only imagine how fun this one has been. LOL

It sounds like we built this kit about 10 years apart. I had 2 toy shops that sold models I could walk too back in the day. Matthews and Selecta, both in the town of Swanley, which was about a mile away. For paint, our local hardware store had the full range of Humbrol enamels to choose from. I can still remember the smell of the place, it was called Wards.

Then a few years later I could get the bus to Lewisham where there was a Beatties store and that was just heaven.

I can't, for the life of me, remember the name of the little shop in Ilford - but it was a one man band operation and shortly after that he retired & closed down. Couple of months later a Beatties opened in Romford. That lasted till I was mid 20's then that closed when the big store in Thurrock Lakeside opened. I've literally just finished the bottle of adhesive I bought from Romford just before it closed. I can remember the big event they had when Humbrol launched their "authentic colours" range of paint sets. They were selling matched kits at half price if you bought the full set of enamels.

Green overlay went on today. Letting that dry for 24 hours then its a coat of gloss varnish in preparation for any decals I can find.


Once decals are on it will be a coat of silk clearcoat to finish it.

Had an early start to the day too - yesterday was Armed Forces day here in the UK and the supermarket chain Tesco announced that all.serving personnel and veterans would get a free breakfast in their cafe's this morning so the OH & I toddled off to the Hastings branch. It was rather nice, even more so for being free....

Well done Tesco. What an excellent gesture.

As for decals, check out Hannants. They have some decal sets £6-£11 for a 1/72 Jaguar, one example below

Thanks Stokesy. I've ordered a set of those from Hannants. And a set of Swedish AF paints by Hataka ready for a Swedish build at some point.... So until these are delivered we move onto the next project......

New decals arrived so they went on today. A bit disappointing - they are the markings for 5 different aircraft - BUT all the stencilling common to all is in another pack. Luckily I'd tried the "leave it in sunlight" trick on the OE ones and - I admit to my total surprise - the tissue cover pulled off easily apart from one spot and that was a unique decal I didn't need! Unfortunately they were printed slightly out of register with the white part - hopefully not too noticeably so.

So - decals applied:
