It does make me chuckle when you compare the Meteor's rather clunky lines to the Me 262, how the 2 designs are so different yet contemporary to each other.

Other than 2 days doing all the common stencils most of which are so small you can't see them unaided!!!

It does make me chuckle when you compare the Meteor's rather clunky lines to the Me 262, how the 2 designs are so different yet contemporary to each other.

In the Meteor's favour were the engines were a tad more reliable than the 262's - on average the 262's had a life of 10 hours. Not unknown for luftwaffe pilots to be heading for the bomber stream only to have an engine fail. In which case best case scenario was heading for home before (a) #2 failed or (b) an allied pilot saw you and came a-hunting. Worst case was it grenading on failure - usually non-suvivable. Also not unknown was for the 262's airframe to come apart. They were after all built mainly by slave labour who had absolutely zero incentive for a German win so sly sabotage was very much on the cards.!!! It has to be said, though, the swept wing of the 262 was very much ahead of its time

Adolf Galland flew the Meteor post war and was quoted as saying when comparing the two - the perfect aircraft would have been the 262 with the Meteor's engines.

Just shows what the allied bombing offensive (and the war in general) had done to Germany's supply of raw quality materials by 1944
