I thought I'd crack this one open while waiting for the paint to dry on the Saint Charmond.
Not much to show yet as I've just been sanding the hydraulic rams for elevation. They aren't very round.

Bit of seam filling to do and quite a large gap so I used this . Talc can be used in the same way.
Still reasonably hard to sand , but manageable.
Still a small indentation to fill, but mostly good on the first pass.

A few bits assembled and as you can see I replaced the axle for the elevation adjustment. Trumpeter just had 2 short bits not true to each other and it was just too complicated. This was much easier and will look better
The barrel went together without a big seam, but the sprue attachment points were not easy. The plastic is a bit hard.
The cruciform still has a way to go, but you get the idea.

A hr at the bench last night got the suspension mostly done.
A bit fiddly getting the linkages to attach and the small piece in the centre of the large rocker arm needed shaving to fit the linkage.
Fitting the rubber to the metal rims has resulted in a small gap that will need filling on almost all the 6 wheels. Also the wheels have a lot of slop on the axle so fitting them is going to be a problem.

The kit gives me the option to use either Pe or plastic parts for the gun sheild. Of course I'm taking the harder option ..ha ha
I don't really know if I've got the parts aglined properly as the instructions aren't really clear. So it's a best guess atm.
Cleaned up, surface roughed up and starting to add the spacer bolts. I had them all on the outside piece and then realised they wouldn't fit that way so had to remove and I'm adding them to the inside first this time. Hopefully the 2 shields will mate together properly this time.

Thank you Stokesy.
Heres a quick mock up of present progress. Still loads of things to add yet.
I did run into a little hiccup. The gun pinion gear that elevates the gun is incorrectly positioned. It the rack actually is in contact with the axle and occupies the space where the pinion gear should be. I decided to replace the pinion gear axle with brass rod early on as Trumpter would have you glue in 2 short pieces of thin plastic on each side. So I was able to slide the gear to the side to get it to fit.
Not sure what I'm going to do, maybe just cut a chunk out of the gear so to give the impression as long as you don't look to closely that it's in place. It's almost hidden where it is.

A few more steps forward on this sacrificing the Chamonds camo.
This the suspension for the front towing wheel set.
Platform crucifix
and the cannon assembly. I had some trouble with the gun sheilds. Firstly trying to fit the to layers together was difficult and required brute force. The the whole assembly has no real location points, but I think I got it right in the end. I suspect Trumpeter might have gotten the length dimension a tad too long making it hard to position right as one side comes hard up against the gear ( at least that's what I think it is ) lifting mechanism. Probably houses a roller chain in real life.
Still have a few bits of Pe to add plus tools.
I would like to add brake lines and the hydraulic hoses for the recoil cylinders and oil tank, but I can't find any pic's of this. I might have to make it up

This is coming along well. Nice modeling on the PE too!
Do you have a gun crew planned for it?

Thank you.
I wasn't originally going to worry about a crew, but I'm thinking about it. So much so I was looking at what was available earlier in the day.
Trumpeter has a set for a large howitzer, but the shops are out of stock.
I didn't plan on a crew , because I was thinking I'd have to add a base and bases take up space. If I can I might just add a crew member onto the gun for the sake of scale.

Back again for another update on the kit I was just supposed to be building as I painted the ST Charmond

.
I tried a little pre shading with shakey uncoordinated hands
Here I missed a pic of the base colour....sorry.
Here is where I came off the rails big time. I prepared my matte varnish with a 6 drops of paint in the cup along with the varnish AND added too much thinner. This is the horrible result.

I was so devastated as it was all going pretty well up till now so much so that I couldn't look at it this morning for hrs.....bit silly it's only a bit of plastic.
I'm trying to remove the Alcad with a measure of success, but it's time consuming.
Once this is done I'm going to do it again with way less thinner and half as much paint in a lighter colour. Might be a few days before this happens though. One horrible side effect of this is the paint/varnish sometimes comes off in lumps...clean up will have to be better than normal...

you sir are a salesman and have way too much confidence.
I'm full of disbelief, but I'm not willing to give up entirely just yet.
Today I had too much to do and tonight I'm knackered, but maybe tomorrow after lunch I may be able to take another look. After that it being the Xmas season we have to go visit the wife's friends for the evening....200km trip and probably won't get back until midnight. So I'm not sure how I'm going to pull up on the Sunday.
Have a good weekend kind sir.

I am put in mind of the (in)famous line uttered by Edmund Blackadder in Blackadder series 2:
"
The path of my life is strewn with cow pats from the devil's own satanic herd!"
This does seem to sum up the life of those who kit-bash for a hobby....

Ain't that the truth and I'm not even kit bashing, although I gave myself a verbal bashing.

So I caught up finally !!

I would never thought a gun would have so much details !! But you tempted me at trying my hand at it one day.
Nice work !
