1/24 scale Tamiya 1300 Beetle Herbie

Hi,
For my next project I’m going to be trying something new. I’m going to be trying to recreate Herbie out of the tamiya 1300 1/24 scale beetle. I will be making some modifications to this model which included adding a sunroof and creating my own water slide transfers which I have never done before so hope it comes out ok.

To get ready for this project I had to think of way of adding a sunroof as the model doesn’t have a sunroof whereby Herbie does. While searching for ways to do this I found that on cults3d there was 3d files ready to purchase by blackbox for sale so I purchased this. Not having a 3d printer I found someone on eBay who could make these for me. I decided to go for the open sunroof.

The first job did was to cut the sunroof out of the model using the template




Once this was done I superglued the sunroof frame into place



The next thing I did was start measuring up for the transfers I need to create




I then went to my pc to create herbie livery after a few attempts I think I have got the livery correct.


Then it was onto priming the model.

This week I started by painting the body of the car, with Herbie being pearl white and not pure white i had to mix up some paint. I did this by using Revell white gloss and had a couple of drops of Revell yellow gloss and revell light grey to make this. Once it was painted i sprayed it in Revell clear gloss and polished using ultimate polishing system.








Once this was done I had to make the first part of the engine up and paint it






Then it was onto adding more engine parts and attaching it to the chassis

Today I have done a little bit more to herbie.

The first thing I did was build up the front suspension ready to be painted in black. While in painted this I also painted some other parts that needed to be the same colour.




I then attached this to the front of the chassis


Now to make a start on the interior. I have attached the pedals, gear stick and handbrake to the model.

Getting some work done.
Is there any way in which to post larger images or is it the way with the POSTIMAGE program that only small images can be hosted into the forum. As a viewer I have to click on each image to enlarge it, view it then go back and go through the same procedure for each image. I can't scroll through them as far as I can see.

Are you using the <Direct Link> opton for the images?
Or the <Thumbnail for forums>?
If its the Thumbnail one can I suggest you use the Direct one instead as that then links the full size image here and us oldies (sorry Digger ) can see instantly what you've been working on!!

Marvellous, heck of a nice paint job on the shell.

Today it was carrying on with the interior of herbie. For this I had to spray up a few parts for the form up part of the engine and the front bonnet.


I also sprayed up the wheels and steering wheel



Next i painted up the dashboard for the film the interior was painted grey to help with reflections while filming so I have done the same


Then it was onto making up the rear seats and then attaching it to the chassis.




Then i built up more of the dashboard by attaching the steering wheel and attaching to the front then i had to attach this all to the chassis



Then I had a few extra parts to the engine


Then I stuck in the front seats and door panels

Today I completed herbie.

First I made up wheels and connected them to the model




Then I painted on the chrome trim and put in the windows




Then i had to put the body onto the chassis to do that I had to add the Hinges to the bonnet and engine cover.



Then it was onto adding the finishing pieces such as door handles, lights, mirrors and bumpers









Then it was just to add the transfers to turn the beetle into herbie
