1/24 Italeri Daf XF105 Smokey Jr

Hi, My first model kit of 2026 is the Italeri Daf XF105 Smokey Joe


The first job was priming. For this I tried a new primer than my usual grey Humbrol spray can. I decided to try Ultimate modelling products white primer through my airbrush. I did most of the parts with this but was struggling to get it to go right so ended up going back to the grey primer for one of the sprues. Turns out it was my airbrush playing up which is why I was struggling so will give the Ultimate primer another go in the future.

With the cab being in separate parts on the spruce I decided use masking tape to build the cab up to make it easier to paint especially with this cab being two tone as in the past I have painted the parts separately and it has been noticeable.



For the front panel I glued the front grill in as well as the handles as these are both white and won’t cause any issues later when i start building the model up. I then used tape to temporarily put the cab together.




I then painted the cab in Revell aqua colour 04 white gloss as well as the bits for the spoiler that I couldn’t attach at this point

I'd build a truck or 2 , but all th shiny stuff puts me off. Maybe I'm just lazy

Yeah I made a few trucks in the past and always enjoy them.

Today was painting the red onto the cab. Italeri included a stencil to be able to paint on the design on and then I used masking tape to fill out the rest. Once this was done I used Revell Italian red 34 aqua colour to paint the red onto the cab and the side skirts. Next job will be do spray the gloss clear coat on and then will be starting the rest of the model.

Another weekend on the Daf and this time I’m actually staring to build.

But first i had to paint the parts which would be Revell aluminium.


Then i was onto building up the chassis which went together quite well. The worse part was cutting of a pipe that wasn’t needed for the model but was tightly attached to the rest of the part.





























Then I had to cut 4mm off each of the front mudflaps


It was at this point I noticed that the wheel guards were meant to be in red even though the instructions didn’t show this. Italeri instructions arnt great at showing paint. So I painted these as well as a couple of other bits that needed to be red for the chassis. If I had noticed this at the beginning I would’ve done this before building up the chassis as the rest is Matt black

Done a little bit more this evening now all the red is dry.

First I attached the fifth wheel, rear mudflaps.




Then I masked of the red and sprayed the chassis in Revell Matt Black. As well as painting on some of the details on the tanks.

Next it will be going back and adding all of the parts of the chassis that I haven’t attached yet.

Just caught up with this build. Nice going. I'M surprise at the amount of detail for a truck.

Another day on the Daf

The first job was to attach the silver parts of the tanks to the chassis



Then it was onto the wheels. Which was going ok until the hub covers which the manual had the wrong part numbers with them all showing the same when there was a difference so I hope I put them on the right way.











Then I made up the exhaust which comprised of plastic chrome pieces as tubing.







Then I made up another tank and attached it to the chassis along with a light




Finally for today I painted on the side markers and chrome steps on the side skirts and also put the transfers on. This was another part where the instructions had the wrong number for the decals.

Few more updates today.

I attached the side skirts to the chassis and attached the exhaust pipes.




Then added the parts to the bottom of the the cabs floor which was then painted black but forgot to take a photo of this.


Then it was onto attach the steering column, the door cards and the overhead lockers and then masked off the outside the cab and painted these in Revell gold. The other side of the floor was painted in gold and Humbrol Matt brown.

Today was mostly spent adding details to the interior

First I painted the seat and the steering wheel in black and brown


Then I just started adding chrome and black details for the dash and beds and roof lockers. These weren’t part of the instructions but added them as the interior looked pretty basic with just the gold paint.







I then painted the lights in chrome and added the rubber around the sunroof and windows. As well as yellow around the roof lights.



Then i added the speedo transfers to the dash and the steering wheel with the Daf logo.



I then added the seats and the dashboard and gear stick to the floor and then drilled out some holes in the back panel then attached this to the floor.

Today was building up the cab as well as painting the rest of the parts. I was hoping to finish at least the main part of the cab today but things have taken longer to stick than I thought but it is coming on well

Over the last two evenings been completing the Daf.

The first thing I did was attach the cab to the chassis .



Then it was onto the rear and adding the chassis covers as well as the rear mudflaps and lights.



Then I added all the transfers to the truck. This was quite hard as they were quite big so it them into 3 but even still they were splitting. This is a problem I have had every time I make an Italeri model. But they don’t look to bad.




Then all I had to do was add the side mirrors and the roof light bar. This was also quite hard to stick on and I also had the two beacon covers missing of the sprue. It strange both were missing but the sprue they were in were in a separate bag that I didn’t open until the end when I needed them and they weren’t there. So I just painted the becons on the bar orange so it doesn’t really notice.

that livery looks REALLY tricky, I don't fancy that at all! You've done a sterling job

I really fancy having a go at one of these Italeri trucks, my only experience with them was when I was about 12 and I built a Magnum, I remember it fighting me the whole way and never turned out great, would like another bash now I'm almost competent and have a little bit more patience!

Thanks yeah the hardest part of this one was the livery but out of all the Italeri trucks I have made this one has been the easiest to put together.
