Global Scale Modeller

Appropriately the third of my current projects, this Ducati is my second motorcycle. As with the Suzuki I recently finished, I'm really, really enjoying this kit. It seems a bit less detailed than the GSX-RR in its out of the box state, but I've added the Top Studio detail-up set which is making up some of that difference. I don't own an airbrush, so mixing some of the paints to get the proper shades has been a new and interesting learning experience for me. I'd say I'm reasonably happy with it, although I feel I have a lot still to learn.

You don't need an airbrush to do top quality work.

Thank you, Cor. I'm getting better with the brush as time goes on, although I'm still making my fair share of mistakes too.

The set includes lots of bolt heads, rivet heads, etc... There's a more detailed shock, front and rear discs and rotors, hose clamps, handle bar ends and a few other bits and bobs. I also bought a Falcon Scale Models 3D printed chain. It should all add up to lots of fun.

That will be a sweet build.

Up next on my bench is a 1/9 Ducati 996 racing bike, just to keep this theme alive.

Oooh, cool!

I've been making slow progress on this and likely even slower going forward as I'll be traveling a fair amount soon. The detail kit from Top Studio has been intimidating to me. I'm really apprehensive about making a mistake, especially when it requires cutting into the kit parts. That said, once I get up the nerve, it's all gone together quite well.






All in all, I'm becoming more of a Tamiya motorcycle kit fan with every step. I can definitely see myself doing more of them in the future.

Thank you for the kind words, and yeah, I have to say, these kits have quickly become my favorites. I'm thinking maybe a Kawasaki next .

I am of course talking about myself here! I am teetering on joining the dark side and building a bike but it would definitely be an out of the box build with no extras and it would surely test my meagre skills - particularly as I have never built one before

I think you're being overly humble. Judging from some of the builds you've posted I would bet that skill will not be an issue for you at all. The dark side beckons...

Yes. They are complicated but easy enough. If you put the effort in they reward immensely.

I bet that detail up set cost a fair bit more than the bike, but the extra detail really kicks it off.

Agreed. As challenging as they are, Tamiya's engineering always seems to make it all just work.

I got the simpler Top Studio kit, but yeah, between it, the Tamiya fork and the resin chain it all added up to a bit more than the bike itself.

That's a very nice build so far indeed! And Cor is 100% right - you don't need an airbrush to do good work. I've been modelling since 2010 and am only just setting up my first AB, before then it was hairy stick and rattle can all the way. I wouldn't say I do top work, but if you need any tips or advice with brush painting I'm always happy to help - as I'm sure if everyone else.
