1/9 Ducati 996 superbike... Revell (ex Protar)

Bought this recently from a guy on scale mates.
Has has a tiny bit done to the engine and many parts are off the sprues.
Have checked and all parts are there.
Kit decals very old. Carbon fibre in the kit decals it too scale large. I have ordered some 1/12 carbon decals which should look a lot better.
I dont like the Power Horse logo, so the bike will still be a racing bike, but stripped of most of the sponsorship and rider info. There were lots of these things around, so it should look like something our there in a musuem...
Compared to a 1/12 bike

It looks as though it'll be a tough fight, but you're already showing the upper hand.

Lots of work already, but what you're doing is defanately much better than the kit and well worth the effort.
Keep up the great work!

Thanks Ben.
Reworked the discs, and fixed up the wheels a bit.

The rim recovery and brake surface treatment is brilliant.
Have you ever tried Molotow Gold for the fork sliders? It turns out like gold chrome... sort of.
That engine should paint up to something very nice too....
Keep at it, looking wonderful!

I have tried chrome pens, which look great but never seem to fully cure.
I will investigate those ones, as I'm looking for a good gold. Thanks.
The engine will get the bare minimum treatment as it's mostly invisible with the cowling on... That's called laziness.

Getting there. Your duke is coming along nicely.
Test fitting.
This bike is all about the wheels and the fairing. I've decided to do another Marlboro livery as the last one looked so good.
The paper it's sitting on is A4, bit smaller that letter size. It's a big bike, much larger than the 1/12 kits.

Apologies accepted. Thanks for the compliments.
Bit of work done cleaning up exhausts.
Rear spring is now fatter, the other was just too thin.
Front axle fashioned from a spring, then aluminium wire slid though that.
Rear axle right side used aluminium washer and a standard steel nut
Swing arm sprayed more silver
Starting to show it's potential.

Nice looking bike
The decals are a bit rough

You stop off in the hood or something?

Its Honky though. An old black term for white people.
I was worried national lampoon movies might not translate into UK

Whereas 'Honking' refers to 'large', as in 'Big and Honking'.

See the latest new releases thread post for a reference to Trumpeter's big and honking 1/16 Ferdinand.

It's a K. Just hard to write on the angle.
Great movie

So I was polishing it a bit and it snapped one of the pipes off. Glued it up, repainted. Spent more time on this exhaust than I do building a 1/12 bike.

Thanks mate. Scale motorsport make the decals
They are very forgiving on the curvey bits.

.they are much better than the kit decals and look good under a gloss cost.

Looks really good with the fairings on. Cannot wait to see the paint job after all that effort

Lot of work getting the fairings clean and evenly covered. Still a bit of work smoothing out the front one around the vents.
I started painting it white. But even after a lot of coats could still see the filler. So have been painting successive shades of lighter grey. I started rushing it a bit and it all went wobbly. So ive finished for the day and will take my time getting it right.
I'll get it all gloss white, then mask the white areas and lay down the red. If it was the other way around the withe would always have a red tint.

The fairing is a huge job. Sand. Prime. Find defects. Repeat. Taking far longer than I anticipated. Oh well.
Got the chain on. Another fiddly job. Drilling and pinning.
These bikes are from a gent who I build a lot of bikes for.
He has a lot of toy-like bikes in his collection and he's engaged me to spruce them up a bit.
The silver one has had the wheels n forks done. Compared to the red one.
Photos don't really show it, but they look far less toy like when I'm done.
Been chipping away at them while I take my mind off the Ducati, which is really stretching out the build, especially compared to a 1/12 bike, which is all I've built all year.
Ordered an X-Wing from eBay as my next build to get away from bikes
For all my complaining it really looks quite the model.

possoms here mate
finally got the white on. a huge amount of work to sand the fairing where the superglue filled the seam thats only on the street version of this bike. the seam kept showing through after id filled it, primed it, sanded it, painted it again. It kept showing up. anyway, you do what you gotta do.
the paint was mr colour Super White. Kind of an off white, and over the grey primer it has a dark white feel, vintage. it looks very nice.
next up is a mask and the red paint. will leave it to dry for a bit first.
