Hasagawa 1/48 F4 Phantom

I started this over two years ago, but back then I wasn't impressed by jets, so it was shelved.

It was a present of my gf hanna so I thought I would get it done one day.

Having recently completed an F22 my appetite for jets has been wetted.

So here it is again.

I've tidied it up from where I was at, it's not perfect but ill make the most of it.

I've filled the seem lines with plastic putty and tidied up the pilots and primered them.

A first for me this will be a hanging model from the bat caves ceiling, haven't done that since I was a kid

Yeah it's a fairly big bird norm

It's built well so far, just at the filling and sanding stage so once past that itll fly together.

Just a quick progress iPhone pic update.

Nose cone,Wings and tail sections glued in place, and filled with some mr dissolved putty, I'll leave this till tomorrow then sand and polish it. Had a worrying moment when I could find the canopy, I had taken it out the box and stored it separately found that along with a eduard mask set I must have bought for it

Hey norm, they are tamiyas pointy q tips, they are very expensive £3.50 for 50 but are very pointy and rock hard so great for getting right,into wing roots, wheel wells and more so great for cleaning the airbrushes.

I saw them ages ago and thought "I'm not paying that" but then got some in a modelling joblot I won on ebay and once I'd used them they are a must have, I don't use many but so useful when needed.

Ok so the aircraft has been fully sanded, polished and rescribed. All the seams have and filler were it was needed too.

I painted the two pilots, using mr hobby paints and applied a black wash using Vallejo acrylic wash.
I removed and repainted the ejector seats, and glued them back in position with the pilots in situ. I also sprayed the cockpit edges with flat black ready for the canopy

The canopy was masked using an eduard masking set (superb) and glued in position with Krystal klear

The F4 was then given a coat of Vallejo grey primer, tomorrow I will get the wheel wells painted and the plane preshaded.

How long do you leave your Vallejo primer for? I leave it for three days to cure fully....

If I'm sanding it (which I very rarely do) it'll be left a couple of days, if I'm spraying straight on it I'll leave it 24 hours.

So. . . what finally turned you over to jets? I'm right there. Just can't see the appeal at the moment. However, I do have a A-10 warthog. It's a jet, but with a close relationship to armor. THE SHOOT'M UP kind

I've aways liked liked jets, but never enjoyed modelling them. I was bought this kit by my gf when I got back into the hobby a few years ago and I think I bit off more than I could chew and I think it's that that put me off them. I badly rescribed this as well as left alot of glue marks and rather than completely ruin a £40 kit I put it away.

I recently started video building for emodels.co.uk and was asked by them to build a jet, so I built a academy F22 Raptor and really enjoyed the build. So I started looking around at other jets and saw the GWH Mig they just released so ive bought it and thought this would be a good project to finish to ease me into the mig build.

Looks great Paul, i built the F4 many years ago in 1/72 scale, ive been really thinking latley about getting one in 1/48 scale. The Hasagawa version looks like a great kit.

Yeah it's a good kit, goes,together fairly easy too.

I'm currently spraying this, trying to cover the preshading but it's taking a few coats, some,pics will be up later

I watched a program on youtube last night about the Mig 29 and its development etc. And I must say I was impressed, its tempted me to get a hold of a Mig kit at somepoint. I know Airfix have just released a new tooling of a 1/72 Mig 29 so I might look into that.

F4 is coming on nicely though.

Yeah gotta love the mig 29 beautiful aircraft.

Anyway didn't get a shot of the preshading as I forgot.

The underneath has been sprayed in mr hobby 316 and the top in 315, one thing I will say about the mr hobby (non flat) whites and light greys is it takes loads of paint to get good coverage, there's 4 coats on that, nearly half a bottle of grey, and i reckon it needs,one more. Wish i hadnt done the preshading so dark now.

Done, paint needed stirring at the bottom, never had to do that before ever, but it went down a lot better after the sludge at the bottom was given a right good stir and a dose of thinner so that explains why the paint was thin, new paints to me so all a learning curve.

The preshading doesn't look anywhere near as dark in the flesh, really shows up on camera.

More progress over the last couple of days, I've masked up and sprayed the white wing and tail sections as well the edge of the wing tips and nose in black. I've then masked up the tricky tail for the silver and steel exhaust protection. The exhaust nozzles were also sprayed in mr hobby buffable stainless steel and then given a light coat of alclad jet exhaust. I managed to get a bit of overspray on the right wing and sods law when I went over it again with the FS grey its gone down darker, ah well it can be a ground crew respray on that section

Got the steel panels sprayed on the tail and the silver in front of the engine nozzles.

That wing Mis match colour is bothering me, so am going to try sort it tomorrow.

I will be honest, I can't see where the mis-match is on the wing?

Things like that are a pain to sort, I wouldn't know how too so would just leave it lol.

I sorted it now left the paint bottle to settle for a few days and then preshaded and resprayed that section without shaking the bottle, looks spot on now

Having a break from decaling, this is all the big decals on, just all the title stencils to do, well over 100 still left to do. Load of these have fallen apart and I've managed to save all bar 2 that will need a touch up with paint.

Only about 150 decals in total

I was tempted

What I think I'm going to do, this is going to be hung from the Batcave ceiling on an angle such that the underneath cannot be seen at all, so I may (not sure yet) leave the underneath stencils off along with the undercarriage.

Ill decide later taking a break again as I'm getting eye strain.

Yep, bugs the crap outta me too! I must admit I tend to usually leave the underside ones off if I CBA....

Decals all done (thank god) another clearcoat of johnsons to protect them and I've just put a wash on now.

So once dry I'll remove most of it then give it a Matt coat and get some pics up

Ok finally finished

Far from perfect but it was a butchered kit to begin with. The decals were a nightmare too falling apart but I saved most of them.

No landing gear as its to be hung of my bat caves ceiling

I really like this build, just enough dirt to show off the aircraft without going towards ready for the scrapheap. This is just right for a naval aircraft of that era IMHO. The aircraft itself is just a classic look, it looks like it means business in a kind of sawn-off shotgun sort of way. If you have one you feel all warm n' fuzzy inside, if you're looking down the wrong end you would like to be somewhere else! I have a 1/72 model in the stash that is moving up my must do list!

I got this about 4 years ago for the bargain price of £9.99 I believe its the same hasegawa kit
started but moved on to other projects, I wasn't very good at filling and scribing then and it look like it was going to need some
and the number of decals was frightening

I was planning to build it with the pilots and hang from the ceiling in the den
