Academy 1:72 A-10A Thunderbolt II

Post by Pedronski »

For the Cold war Built I'll be having a go at the Academy A-10A Thunderbolt II

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is an American twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic in the early 1970s. The only United States Air Force aircraft designed solely for close air support of ground forces, the A-10 was built to attack tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets with limited air defenses.

The A-10 was designed around the GAU-8 Avenger, a rotary cannon that is the airplane's primary armament and the heaviest such cannon mounted on an aircraft. The A-10's airframe was designed for survivability, with protective measures such as 1,200 pounds (540 kg) of armor to enable the aircraft to continue flying after taking significant damage.

The A-10's official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a fighter that was particularly effective at close air support. The A-10 is more commonly known by its nicknames "Warthog" or "Hog".

The first prototype Thunderbolt II made its initial flight on May 10, 1972. A-10A production commenced in 1975. Delivery of aircraft to USAF units began in 1976 and ended in 1984.

This has been the most challenging kit I've built so far (only 3), loads of flash, ejector pin marks everywhere. Also the pieces didn't seem to fit together very well at all. There was a lot of sanding and filling, but I'm pleased now it's getting near completion.

More soon...

I've finished the A-10A but I've fogged the canopy.

Here are the final Photos...

A few other problems were the nose landing gear doors, I broke them off and the front decals, I didn't apply them very well.

Thanks for all your comments.
