Dragon 1/35 Nashorn

Hey guys.....

The leopard2 is about 90% finish and I kinda run out of steam on that so that cat is shelved for a week or two until I can decide on which weathering effects I will go through with ...

Hence, I have decided to work on my third dragon and second open-topped vehicle, beautiful vehicle known as the Nashorn.
This is the kit -


I would love to show the sprues but there are just so many in this case that it will become so long. But, I can tell you that this kit has - 1,103 parts (798 in grey styrene, 240 “Magic Track” links, 35 etched brass, 24 clear styrene, 2 springs, 2 coil springs, 1 length of wire, 1 turned aluminium gun barrel)
That really is a LOT of sprues. Most of them are not even for this kit. Usual dragon .. you know.. anyway
I started on the shock absorbers -


and the bogies -


Which was relatively easy, compared with my Dicker Max.
Followed that up with the first part of the front glacis plate; the hooks -


And then, there's the second part which is the visors and the hatch. The visors can be made workable but I looked at the instructions and having no intention of showing any interior nor to get frustrated over putting together some complicated stuffs , I just skipped all the steps and just closed the driver visors shut.


now if you are also building this kit - be aware of the following -


The four little hinges that I circled on the manual is not labelled and I had to spend a good deal of time trying to find them. They are actually on the F sprues. So if you are building this, be on the look out for this.
After that, I put on the rear plate on the hull tub -


and I glued on the glacis. A bit of patient and filling is required -


After that, I went back to the back plate again and put on the bibs and bobs as instructed. Naturally, I left the muffler off for now -


After that, I decided to put on the exhaust pipes that leads to the muffler. The kit is a 3-in-1 comprising of initial, initial-modified and early. I went for the initial-modified and put on the pipes on both side like so -

AS you can I have also put on the wheels and idler.

I then attached the little box that is associated with the initial-modified version which also have the mud-flap on it. Too bad I don't have any brass sheet lying around. I couldn't damage it as it was plastic. ''sob ''
You can also see the two ends of the exhaust pipes which will in turn go into the muffler later on -


After that, I finished up the front fenders. Much to my surprise, that was all there is on the front fenders-

Hey guys ... Got an update here ...

Last time, I left off at the fenders so lets continue from that.
I attached the fenders and put on the first base coat so that I can put on the Tracks ASAP -


After that, I painted the wheels, put up the tracks after that and painted them so that I can get it out of my way and concentrate on more stuffs -




After that, I started on the gun-
I honestly have no idea what this is called but this it the one that hold the barrel and goes into the cradle ( somebody please tell me what this is )


After that, the breech ( quite a lot of steps and parts just for that ) -


Followed up by the Muzzle brake -


the whole thing -


I followed that up with a recoil cylinder -


Started building up the left armour-struts for the cradle -


and this is the right -


and this is the gun sight -


And if you are building this, becareful of this step on the left armour-strut


D20 is supposed to go into the little hole where it says D-14 and D-14 is actually supposed to go into the the half-circle slot above D-7. I learned about the mistake the hard way so if you guys are building this, be careful of this.

And I moved on to some small bibs-and-bobs on the inside of the sides of the super-structure -


Also, if you are building this, be mindful of this step as well -


MA7 is a PE part and it's kinda situated very low and conflicting with M31 swing arc so you might want to move it up so that M31 can swing properly. But that's your choice.

And I will leave you guys at this step. I will keep you guys updated.

it looks like you're making the hornisse (early type) variant of the nashorn as they would have the exhaust leading to the back and have a muffler
the only ways to recognize a early type (as far as i know) are the exhausts with the muffler and the lack of a round bar on top of the guncradle just behind the gun shield
i have one i my stash aswell just not.the exact same.kit
i have the premium edition kit got it from a private seller at a convention with some extra stuff he had put in the box already
i also built 2 hornisse vehicles in the past (older kit) and theae tank hunters are cool looking vehicles
looking forward how you do the interior and the rest ofcourse

Thanks Mark... but to be perfectly honest, I have no idea what version is this historically. I am building a '' initial-modified '' as stated in the instructions. Sadly, I cannot find any good informations about it

Right... Time to update this -

Last time, I left off after putting on the small stuffs on the side wall of the super structure.

Now, it's time for the rear wall -


and this is the rear of the vehicle ( the outside wall of superstructure )


Finished the gun shield. I just had to put on those two little things ( what are those? ) -


Finished one of the magazines -


I had to modified them a little bit to have those little round holders on the empty rack folded down.
I will be showing one magazines open and one closed -


And this is how this baby is looking now -


After that, I finished up the front glacis by adding on the remote-controlled gun-travel lock -


Followed that by closing the angled walls and by adding the extra spare wheels to show a '' initial-modified '' version -

Also managed to find a spare tow cable to put on.

And with that finished, I put on the base coat -

Gary that looks awesome. I have never built one in 1/35, but I have a soft spot for PzIVs and the vehicles that use the same chassis, such as this, the Hummel etc.

I might just have to look this kit out in the future!

and after seeing these pics i can say that it is a nashorn as they have the measuring poles on the back panel and that bend round bar on the gun so i.was wrong on that one
but the nashorn is coming together nicely

Right guys - time to update this;

Last time, I stopped after I put on the first base coat so let's carry on after that.
After putting on the base coat, I was bored that day so I decided to do something fun, which is chipping and the only place I can chip before putting on the camo scheme is the interior so I went ahead and chipped the entire interior-



and the gun -



Not exactly a first class work but I ain't complaining ......

After that, I put on the camo scheme. I had to spend a good amount of time to look for it but it was finally my friend who suggested to do this scheme and I am very thankful for that as it looks great and kinda stand out from what I normally do-

Anyway... after that comes the decals - ( forgive the highly glossed surface )











I followed that with some streakings -





You can also see some small scratches on the side of the super structure.
I looked around the model and I saw that little area there just perfect for putting in some rust from pooled water so I went ahead and did that along with some streakings and various chippings as well -





I noticed my Matt Varnish become a little frosted which will be wiped away with some thinner later on.
Here is the rear. I also found a rust-trap so I put some rusts in there as well -



Next is the muffler.
Note - If you guys are building this, be very very careful with the muffler as the instruction was VERY misleading and I put in the wrong way and it didn't fit so I have to take the darn things apart ( AFTER it as been painted and rusted ), put the little attachment point the other way around from the instruction and spend another 1 hour painting and rusting it. Be sure to dry fit that darn thing before you guys glue it.



I noticed it's a little bit red ( probably because of the burnt serpia ) so I darkened it a bit more -



Now it's the time to get dirty ( literally ) with pigments -





I noticed the colors on the 2 wheels are different. I pondered for a bit should I fixed it but I like it that way so I'm gonna be keeping it like this.

And here's how the might rhino look after all the weathering was done -

Well, that's it for now. Whew, this was a rather long update. Next will be the crew ( which I am not looking forward to >_< ) ...

Well done dude, this build looks beautiful. You always know somethings good when you can see it in your head out in the fields, sloshing in mud and causing havoc; looking at the Nashorn I can instantly see the setting its in.

For a complete newbie like me I look at some of these tank and can never imagine being able to build one, and when I saw the 1k+ pieces... my brain froze :-p

Hey guys ... After working on it for a while, I got myself an update for you all.

Now, bear with me as my figure painting skills sucks and I'm still giving my best and improving on it.

Here is one of the loaders-

This is the gunner ( this is the Tristar set made specifically for the Nashorn. I opted to use this gunner as I want to save the other gunner for the Stuer Emil )




I belive this is the commander -




And I carried on with the small little things that need to be put on -
Here is the MG34 on the right side of the super structure -


These are the little periscopes attached on the support ''girder '' of the super struture -




They were clear parts to I just put on a coat of Vallejo Colour Reflective green on it.

I wanted to give the vehicle more life so I decided to put in the helmets -

Vallejo German grey based with drybrushed GunGrey ( I believe it was GunGrey )

I put in a little black bag there just to liven up things.. what's in there is beyond me.. LOL... and a fuel can on this side-


and you will notice that I also put on some ammo belt for the MG34-

It's a little bit sloppy as it is so small and I cannot focus my eyes.

Water can on this side -


So that's that with the vehicle.
This is how it looks now with all her crew glued onto place. I still have to paint the shoulder badges ( which I am not looking forward to but I really want to so it's a little dilemma there for me )








Coming up next is the diorama for this, which I am dreading. Hope I can pull that off well. Fingers crossed.
