I am a new builder and i want to get informed and involved with group builds, and help would be great

I have moved this to a more appropriate part of the forum for you.

The information you want dependson what you want to be involved with? We have several main Group Builds running on the forum just now, alongside some Special Interest Group Builds (SIGs). Our main one is a Cold War theme, and so you can join in with any vehicle, plane, figure you name it so long as it was in military service with either a NATO or Warsaw Pact country between 1947 and 1991.

There is a Non-Military Figure GB on the go as well, any scale so long as its a figure of non-military persuasion.

And there are several SIGs on the go, a Panzer II and a Helicopter themed one. Again any scale or manufacturer, so long as they conform to the theme.

To enter, just start at thread up in the appropriate forum section and introduce the model you are doing. Models entered must be unstarted so sprue and box shots are encouraged at the start. The idea is just to produce the best thread you can, in terms of showing your work, history of the subject etc etc.

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Ideally the GB's are usually on a general theme to allow lots of members to contribute. Whereas SIGs are more specialist and naturally would be smaller in scope. I'd say your idea might be more of a SIG than GB, but I get confused about the difference sometimes. Either way you'll need to have a good number of willing contributors - at least 9 or 10, and one way of checking interest is to create a poll.
Ultimately the decision lies with Lee and Paul - the site Admin bods, and they are careful not to have too many GBs and SIGs running at the same time. But by all means give it a try, I think your idea should make for a quick, fun and seasonal SIG.

Okay, one last thing (hopefully!) how do i join a group build?
