Hi Guys

I thought this might make an interesting topic. We've probably all done it at some stage, purchased a kit that came with extra's that are way above our modelling skills, or because it was so cheap, we've added extra's galore or we've just got carried away with adding extra's over time.

I'll put up my hand and claim to 3 kits that come under these criteria.

3rd Place

This kit came with all the extra's, all up it was actually cheaper then the kit itself on other online sites.





Look at all that etch, all the modifications to even use most of it is way above me, somebody me now.

2nd Place

This kit I got for $10AUD (5 pounds for you Poms ), so I thought I would add some extra's.



This isn't too bad, except it already had a metal gun barrel, so what if it's not exact.



All that etch again , what was I thinking.



1st Place

This plane has got to be my all time favourite jet, the kit itself wasn't cheap and then I decided to do some Internet research, oh boy was that a mistake.



I just thought I would get this extra to fix this problem, then this other piece to fix another problem, is it ever going to stop.





So guys, if you have them, show us your guilty pleasures or those kits that you will build some day.

Hmmm Eduard have released some Russian missiles and pylons that would be perfect for the MiG....... (sound of running feet fading away)

I build my models out of box all the time, but one or two times a year i go crazy on aftermarket stuff. Here two examples:


On this Dragon M48A3 i put a lot of resin, i have spent like extra 50€. I got figures from Verlinden, the flag from Reality in scale, stowage from Plusmodel, gun mantlet cover from Verlinden and the sandbag armour from Legend.


Thats the Tiger II from Tamiya (i think the kit was produced in the 90´s). I got PE fenders from Voyager, single piece tracks from Tamiya (they sell these separately, i did not like the included rubber band track), Aber PE engine grills, RB aluminium barrel and Atak resin Zimmerit.

With regard to rationality these two projects definately went overboard (especially the Tiger II) but who cares? i had a lot of fun with the assembly.

Pretty much all of my builds that I put on this site....

I'd say 60% of my builds are over the top.
I don't seem to be able to just leave well enough alone.
I have to improve them all. Even if it's just some stowage or a few figures.

HamilkarBarca, 2 great models mate, the extra's do add that little bit of extra oomph.

Paul, yeah that qualifies , a mate of mine in Belgium tells me there are now "Naked Kit" categories appearing in shows over there, the pre painted Tiger II would of been a shoe in.

Coen, I don't know if I would call some stowage and figures as over the top, more just adding your own uniqueness to the model.

As I had said Rossco, that would be the minimum that I do.

I'm finding it to be just routine to pick up extra stuff for my subjects. If the model really needs it, I'll go a bit over the top. So when are you going to start those kits? What are you waiting for? Gotta start somewhere Don't let the PE scare you It doesn't bite.

I think for me the first kit I have coming up which would be considered me punching above my weight (at least to the point where I am entering unknown territory), is with my 1/350th USS Buchanan. As with ship kits, its small, and its got a good bit of very small PE parts. Now I have worked with PE before, but never had to add railings etc to a ship!

So for me, this is going to be a walk into the unknown, also in terms of painting something like that, and weathering it.

there's a build I'm planning at the moment which is gonna be a real adventure out of my comfort zone with etch and resin, but the lovely thing about our hobby we can set ourselves challenges and build them as we learn the techniques with other less scary builds

one build that did get the better of me was Trumpeter's 1/35 Karl Morser as my skills werent great then, and having to brush paint it at the time meant it never really got past sub assembly stage lol

This reminds me to check for some aluminum bells for my eagles but to be honest i like the kit prices been low and the option of buying the extras or not, the Tiger 1 1:16 will be the most expensive kit i have ever had (i would be scared to add up the price) lol if only i could stay focused i would be laughing

For me its anything will tracks or wheels just finished the build of a AIFV from AFV club just got to paint it now and just started a Italeri Sd.Kfz 10/4 flak 30 with figures two 1st for me armour and figures. but to be honest the figures probably wont get done until i can afford to get some paint to do them.
