Wilhelm Gustloff Ship Scale Model?

Post by Panzerwolf »

Hey all,

I am looking for a scale model of the Ship MV Wilhelm Gustloff.

The Gustloff was a german passenger ship, sunk in 1945 by the soviet submarine S-13, carrying some 10,000 desperate refugees and wounded soldiers. Only about 5% of the passengers survived.
My grandfather's uncle wanted to buy tickets for the whole family, but the ship was crowded and thus (luckily) no tickets were available anymore. He himself however died in this tragic disaster, the most terrible ever in ship sinking history, much worse than the Titanic.

I would like to build a scale model as a tribute to this, but haven't found any kit yet.
Have you ever seen/heard of a Gustloff model?

Help greatly appreciated!

A great find that man, looks like an.interesting project.

The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was indeed MUCH worse than the titanic but.............the dead were Germans at the end of the war so the world turned a blind eye to it.

It is a shame that nealy 7 decades on the world (in general) is still oblivious to it

That's a coincidence, i saw this ship on youtube on a clip about the sinking yesterday, a passenger ship should not have been targeted and im sure this would be a great tribute.

Thanks all for the great replies.
The one from HP-Models sure is quite expensive for a 1/700 scale, so I might consider building it from scratch.
It's terrible that people today are not aware of the Wilhelm Gustloff incident, and that almost no company has this available as a scale model...

My great grandfather worked for the German railway and this helped him to avoid the war, but eventually he had to enter service in early 1945 and fought in East Prussia with a Nebelwerfer unit. Soon he became desperate and shot himself in the hand in order to get home to his wife and children. He took a wounded comrade with him and tried to get a place on the Gustloff, but he was too late, the ship was already gone. He took the next one and escaped. Lucky fellow! I think plenty of such stories exist, this tragedy is still quite important for Germany. Its is certainly an interesting topic, kinda interested in building a model of this ship too.

A very touching ans tragic story, Hamilkar Barkas. It is interesting to hear some WW2 experiences.
I think we all have some stories to share about our relatives in WW2, so I believe it might be a good idea to create a 'WW2 stories of relatives'-thread in the Non-Modelling section.
