Dragon Kleine Panzerbefehlswagen Sd.Kfz.265

Post by longlance67 »

Hiya All.

I need a break from the Stryker as the fun factor is beginning to strain a little so a small project is needed to do in between and needing no excuse to build a dragon kit and being a subject I have not yet added to my WWII armor collection. The first of the Panzers or in this case the tiny command vehicle based on the Panzer I.

Brief history:

The SdKfz 265 was designed to fulfil a growing need within the German Army for a command tank, following the realization that the leaders of a massive panzer formation would themselves have to travel in a tank of some type. This vehicle would have to carry extra equipment and personnel to assist the field commander in his duties.
In 1935 Krupp offered a command tank design based on the existing Panzer I Ausf B training tank chassis. The Ausf. B was a turretless chassis version of the Panzer I designed solely to train tank drivers, and lent itself easily to conversion into a command vehicle.

To increase space for a radio operator the rotating turret of the PzKpfw IB was eliminated and replaced with a larger fixed "box" superstructure. This allowed room for map boards, paperwork and a more powerful FuG6 radio transmitter in addition to the earlier FuG2 radio (Panzer I's had only FuG2 radio receivers). Despite these modifications the vehicle's interior remained small, a factor leading to its rapid replacement by conversions of larger tanks. The cramped quarters also made operation of the vehicle's single ball-mounted MG13 or MG34 machine gun virtually impossible. Because of this, most SdKfz 265 were also equipped with pistol ports, and many had their machine guns removed entirely. A large frame antenna was mounted to the hull of many early version SdKfz 265s. The antenna gave the upgraded radio transmitter units better range and reception.
Because it would be necessary for a command tank to keep up with the tanks under its command, the original 60 hp Krupp M305 gasoline engine of the Panzer I was replaced by the more powerful 100 hp Maybach NL38TR gasoline engine, resulting in a design that was 3 km/h faster, despite weighing 300 kg more than the Panzer I. Increased fuel capacity also gave the SdKfz 265 a range of 180 miles, nearly 100 miles further than the Panzer I.
Despite its ungainly appearance, the SdKfz 265 was 1.97 m high, only 25 cm taller than the original Panzer IB.

The Kit:

Image

The kit comes in with a part count of 426 parts which for such a tiny tank gives an idea that this kit will be a very finely detailed kit indeed :th:

within the box you will find seven frames in DML's standard grey plastic, the quality is very high with no flash and minimum as we would expect from DML. Also included is a nice decal sheet and small etch fret

Hiya Markus, great have you on board mate, to answer your question about the tracks, they are no magic tracks as this appears to be an early release of their new range before magic tracks seems to become standard

HollywoodModelling wrote:Watch out for those track links... mine have broken into shambles more often than not.. that's why it is sitting on my shelf still trackless..
thanks for the heads up mate, the tracks do look very delicate indeed, so some fresh blades and careful cutting will be in order for this build

thanks lads

Thanks Tom, the figures are very nice, even one chap is modeled with a pipe in hand very nice stuff indeed. The tracks will be a fiddly business but I like link to link tracks so as long as I take my time with it we should be ok :cheers2:

Thanks John, great to have you along mate, I have to agree the Panzer 1's are lovely little machines and kinda funny to see how German armor evolved during the war, I have DML Tiger II on the shelf it will be funny to see the size differences when its complete lol

thanks lads

will have a photo update later just letting some parts set at the moment

thanks for looking

Hiya too you all,

thank you for your all kind words and interest my friends means a lot to me, now lets get stuck in shall we :thumb2:

It's been a while since my last DML kit and that grey plastic makes me feel like I'm again hahahah its nice to be back in my comfort zone again and with a completely new subject this being my first Pz.1
So first thing you will notice once you start peering over the manual is just how small but yet busy this build we be with plenty of etch to bring out the details. Like all armor kits the assembly begins with the running gear and this kit is no exception to that rule.

Step:1

step 1 is broken into the making the bogie assemblies A & B of which you make two
Image

Image

they went together ok I did encounter a little fit issue when mating parts C9 - C8 and C6- C7 the fit was a little lose and resulted in a slight wobble in the wheels that needed to be carefully aligned as the glue sets, this could have been a mistake on my part though

Bogie A:
Image

Bogie B:
Image

thats all for now, as the weather is beginning to get nasty again as our wee little country once again gets battered by storms, but as long as the shed stays rooted to the ground I'll be ok

thanks for looking

update

the bogies set aside its time to turn our attention to the lower hull which is tiny lol
for the opening stages of the lower hull and torsion arms positions you will refer to the small correction sheet included in the box instead of the manual

Image

one of the first things it will ask you to add is long etch band which will make up the edge of the fenders, my experience with etch is a little limited and no where near the skills on show in Fran's wonderful Marder build, but we all have to start some where :thumb1:

Image

my tools for the job are a little simplistic but worked ok for this basic bending exercise, I used a tweezers and a straight edge from a steel ruler to conform the correct the shapes, there is one band for each fender

Image

though etch scares the life out of me, this is neatest etch work I've done so far so I'm very chuffed with it

Yes they are simple bends, but I find etch regardless how simple very different due a small shack in my hand that I just have,so even small etch jobs are a challenge for me :eeek:

Looking really good, Shane!
Never thought of placing the parts on top of the instruction sheet! Will try that!
I've never had any luck or patience with complex PE.
Can't wait to see where you'll take this kit :)

Thanks for the kind words John :th:
got the idea of putting the parts on top of instruction steps off some body a while back, but it works nicely when trying to give a blow by blow account of a build gives any body wishing to build a good idea of what to expect in the box :th:

My experience with etch other than laying down grilles is pretty much the same, always had rotten luck with trying form parts or having them fly into the void from my tweezers. But this kit seems to the best test bed to improve my etch skills as its not overly complex...famous last words right

cheers mate

Hiya all,

another quick update for you, we are bracing ourselves for another night of storms here in the west of Ireland, apparently the last week has been the worse storms to hit our shores in 70 odd years but we Irish are a hardy bunch and we took heed to the three little pigs and built everything out of stone

so my weather rant aside, now lets get down to the modeling, got some work done on the running gear there isn't all that much to it on a vehicle as small as this but everything went together smoothly

Image

Image

one thing that disappointed me was the fit of the return rollers, the mounting pegs are just tapered well pegs and results in the rollers sitting a little lose so attention when aligning them well be needed

Image

also got the idler and drive sprockets done no dramas here

Image

now all is ready to temporarily attach the running gear for the track assembly

Image

thanks for looking

stay safe out there,

Hiya All, Hope your doing well :th:

got a small update to share with you, been taking my time, and the main objective for this build is not to cut corners and let my inner rivet counter escape a little :nena: in all its an effort to become a more neater builder and challenge myself and this little kit is proving to be a lot of fun indeed :cheers2:

so I'm at the stage where the running gear and tracks go on, some modelers prefer to glue tracks and road wheels in place and paint all together and I prefer to try to leave off the tracks and wheels so can paint them separately and add them before the weathering begins, and for a vehicle this small I feel that this is the way to go as trying to get in to paint everything in place might prove tricky.

So what I found a nice way to go about this is glue the tracks only to sprockets and idlers and leave the road wheels lose, I'm sure that what most of you do any way but I just thought I'd mention it for any new armor modelers who might be following this and hopefully someone may find this useful :cheers2:

To secure the running gear in place I used latex lquid mask and added a little amount to each mounting post

Image

the suspension is pose-able so any Dio modelers will be pleased to know :th:
but since I plan to model this on a flat country road I needed to the suspension arms to line up some what, so I used a straight edge to keep everything lined up

Image

and here's what I'm left with

Image

now its time to begin the hard part the tracks....thanks for the heads up too Hollywood Modeler :thumb2:

Image

thanks for looking, wasn't that short of an update now looking back now hahahah ah well

P.s anyone living in any area that's having stormy conditions please take of yourselves

hey Rob, we are at the moment getting a little battering, but a few miles inland but we still have fallen trees and the like, I have a lot of family in westmeath its lovely spot, and since its well inland they should be spared from the worst of the winds, but don't worry I'm keeping safe, and staying indoors as much as poss

Hahaha oh those stormy wifes and partners, speaking of which my darling Partner sent me out in the middle of a storm to book a table for Valentines day the things we for love eh :thumb2:
but we all know without our women we would lesser men indeed :cheers2:

As for the tracks I tend to find it really relaxing, think its cause I can turn on autopilot and to some degree switch off, but my favorite step is always without fail either weathering or figure painting lol

good to know your keeping safe, and avoiding those indoor storms Markus :thumb1:

This looks awesome!!! I love it so far bud...man the detail on Dragon kits is unbelievable. Great job with that PE too! Keep it up - every successful encounter with PE is a small victory and another step towards becoming better.

How are you holding up in the storms bud? Are they winter storms? Do you guys get a lot of snow? It's like -5 degrees F (-20 C) all around the eastern US right now...my fingers were starting to stick to the brass PE frets it's so cold

Hi Andy I'm holding good we are meant to get a battering this week from gale force winds, we never normally get storms as bad this, they are the worst storms we have had about 50 plus yrs with 50kmh winds at some places, lucky I live about 14km inland from the city so we been getting 15-20km/h winds and unfortunately it has caused a fatal crash I think we all started taking it seriously then

though it sounds like no cake walk on your side either buddy, you guys have been in near blizzard conditions in certain parts according to our news any way, so I hope your keeping safe mate, We are meant to get a cold snap later this month which normally falls to about -9 to -15C which is a bit nippy but I prefer the cold to the heat....man the heat kills me hahahah

thanks for the kind words Andy,

I'll some video updates up soon

Hiya All

hope your all doing well, the storms have passed thankfully and skies have cleared which in Ireland is a rare event indeed :nena:

I thought I would post a photo update after doing the vids as a lot of the detail is missing due to the quality of my camera, and also thought I would add some more of my thoughts on how to tackle the tracks

as I mentioned in the vid they are a little nasty to put together as they are very small and fragile, I found switching blades for fresh ones after every third run or so helped to cut down on the tracks snapping, also keeping the blade at a 45 degree angle and cutting with a smooth sawing action seems to work very well

however breaks may happen regardless, a good way I found to repair them was clean but parts up first, then leaving them flat on your work surface

Image

then give a light coat of tami extra thin to the larger piece of the two this will create an almost instant workable bond and will stop the smaller part from spinning around the place, using a hobby blade position the broken part

Image

then coat the seam with extra thin and your good to go :thumb1:

Image

the tracks we done in lengths at a time to conformed to the running gear will still setting I used tape to secure them between lengths

Image

after two evenings of work I was left with this :)

Image

thanks for looking

stay safe my friends

Mate I really sorry to hear things went so badly on your build with the tracks there's no worse a feeling when things start going wrong on a build, but I really hope you come back to it some time soon mate :th:

but we all know without our women we would lesser men indeed :cheers2:
 oh man ... she sent you through the storm to book a table for Valentines day... that's great ! But I totally agree with you Shane ... we couldn't exist without the women indeed otherwise it would be a sad world (I'm sure)!
Anyways ... let's come to business buddy ...

First of all ... in my opinion it's a great idea to meld your building reviews with some videos :th:! It's the better way to explain what you've exactly done on the several steps of your build (and no worries about the vid-quality ... the style of explanation is the more important thing here and you did it very well :th:)!
I think it's also good to do some quick picture-updates as always too (in addition maybe)!
And last but not least ... I'm glad to see your success on this horrible tracks after all the hard work you had to put into... well done mate :th:!
Looking forward to your next update ...

Very true about our women Markus we would be in deep trouble without them even if they do make us risk life and limb for a booking....ah the things we do for love right lol ;)

Thank you for the great feed back my friend, all of what you said has been taken on board to make my vids as good and as fun as possible, the plan is to format my future builds with the standard photo updates and then when a large assembly or issue encounter or finished I will make so a video, I also want to try my hand at a Coen style life build where it is just a sit and chat and get to know everyone. I've done a 20min one for this build already, and it is funny how much I talk in it lol

I will upload that soon, and we'll see if its any good

thanks again Markus

keep safe

cheers mate, my first waffle gets kinda deep lol nothing too crazy just making some points on some thoughts I have about modelling lol

Here's a quick photo update of where I am now with the build, I'm turning my attention to the top deck and turret some nice weld details here and only small about of filler was needed to hide a seam form a panel that makes the rear of the turret, other than that nothing else was troublesome

Looking great Shane :th:!
I like this very nice detailed top deck with all its rivets and the PE-grills you've added!
Those Dragon kits are always very impressive and I should give one of these a shot myself (maybe this year)!
But I have to note that I'm a little bit scared of the enormous number of parts and also concerning the level of difficulty :eeek:! And I wouldn't spoil my enjoyment of scale modelling .

Have to agree with you totally Markus, Dragon make some of the finest all included kits out there I've been looking at there recently released Panzer IV Normandy kit and man the amount of goodies that come with it is breathtaking .

As for the Panzer 1 if your planning to build one mate, don't be put off by the part count, it is a very fast flowing build and you really don't feel snowed under once you get into it, after seeing all the work you did with your leo 1 mate you would without doubt charge through it mate :thumb1:

here's a bit of live build vid of everything I was doing up to the last update and also I stumble onto a topic recalling a debate of modeling ethics I remember taking part in a few yrs back lol

enjoy

Great job buddy - and great video.

If I tried to do that, half the thing would have to be censored out due to liberal use of colorful language....

firstly tank you from the link, it reminds me of the album of photo's da took during his time in the Leb, one photo I always wanted to make in miniature for him was a pic of him standing only ten yards in
front of M60 blazer with its main gun trained, hahaha yet he wanted to get his photo taken lol

as for the language I normally swear like mad like most of us do but I get it all out of my system before I start filming hahahah ;)

Hiya all,

its been a little while since I last showed yee what I was up to on this build, and I've quite a bit to it since last time we checked in :th:
I stepped away from the steps in the manual at this stage of the build as the manual called for me to add many small details before mounting the hull parts together, this would have resulted in many parts being broken while handling, so I built up the superstructure and hull before going onto smaller parts, this went together well enough with a little filling needed here and there but nothing to panic about :th:

Image

Image

Image

Image

small details added to turret roof

Image

a small gap needs yet to filled on the joint between the engine deck and rear plate

thanks all for now,

we will be back to the instructions now that we've built up the hull and superstructure

thanks for looking

Can't beat WW2 subject in my opinion but I must say the modern stuff is growing on me, as you can just turn on the news or go on youtube and watch helmet cams for inspiration and reference

Hiya All,

quick update for you

been working on the rear deck, things were going grand till the muffler grille fly off my tweezers and I haven't been able to find it :wall:

But ah well the show must go on, the muffler was textured with a stippling of liquid green stuff, and the smoke box was mounted in place, which included some nice etch details too :th:

thankfully nothing else went missing
