Guys Im joining with two builds, both dive bombers.
One is a legendary plane here in Sweden, The SAAB B17 our own equivalent to the Stuka or Helldiver etc.
The other is the most legendary dive bomber in history, the Ju87 Stuka in the D-5 version, its Italeris 1/48 kit.
I will start with the B17 since its the least complex kit of the two, and since Im also doing Another kit right now.
Its a short run kit, so not very complex and not of top detail or quality. However only read good things about it, eg goes together without problems. 1/72 is not my scale, If I can choose I prefer 1/48 for larger full scale subjects such as Twin/four Engine planes, and 1/32 for smaller subjects, single Engine fighters etc. In this case this is the only model in existence of the B17, and I love this aeroplane.
So when the GB was announced it was a given, 1/72 or not.
We have a flying B17 in Sweden which I have seen many times at airshows and it presents itself majestically in the sky, the Music from the radial just adds to the experience. (Have included a Picture of the real thing last)

The kit is from Marivox, and its very generous. You can build all Three variants, B17A, B and C + the BS seaplane version + the Target tug version. As for decals you can do Ethiopian, Danish, Finnish, Austrian and of course many Swedish variants.
I will do one of the Classic Swedish ones. Dark olive green upper and Blue grey under.
I plan to start this weekend.

I hate to admit my ignorance but I had no idea Saab made planes as well as cars. Love the look of this one.

I might go do some reading hehe.

I remember talking with Robert A about this one. Great to have something not as mainstream.

Hehehe well...its a very simple kit. So assembly fits on a one pager!
When i looked at it I got flashbacks, this is how most instructions looked like back in the 70ties and 80ties.
Nowadays when kits are complex and have hundreds of parts instructions have evolved into equally complex booklets.

Ok Guys some SAAB B17 info Before I start:

The SAAB 17 was the Swedish equivalent of the Ju87 Stuka, SBD Dauntless, Aichi D3A Val and other WWII dive bombers.
The maiden flight was in 1940 and it entered service in 1942.
It was designed as a dive bomber but also used as recon Aircraft.
The bomber variant was designated B17, recon S17
There were Three variants, the main difference being the Engines.
17A, Licence built (Sweden) P&W Twin Wasp, 1065-1200hp
17B, License built (Poland) Bristol Mercury XXIV about 800hp
17C, Piaggio P.XI about 1000hp
It could be fitted with wheels, skis or floats. An unique feature was its use of the extended landing gear assembly, with its large covers, as dive brakes. (The "legs")
In total 325 Aircraft was built.

OK here we go...just took the first parts of the sprues and cleaned them up.
Major parts seems to have an ok fit, like the fuse halves, the detail level is...hmm sparse, and some parts are way out of scale.
The MG is very BIG... (But thats cool, to small and we have a problem...hehehe)
The stick is also to be scrapped, strange shape and to small, when placed it does not even reach up to the seat.
Will scratch build a new one.

Next up, glue some cockpit parts together and the paint the base color for the interior.

This SAAB 17 and a Stuka D-5...but...well inspired and could-not-resist so Went on eBay tonight and...hehehe

Nice chose of subjects, also am really looking forward to see this build and the Stuka.

Ok...fine again ...did other stuff and did not notice that I got logged out.
So, did whole post and... All gone.

Ok, again.
Finally the Vampire is in the spray Booth, so now this baby can carry on for real.

Discovered that i managed to glue the instrumet panel with other part skewed
So, had to very gently cut it loose again, sand and re-glue. Tiny and fragile was very scared to break it.
But worked out well.


"all" the internal parts ready for paint, incl fuse halves.


A tiny bit of flash... In fact, could not tell wing from flash.


So had to use other half as template to be able to cut and sand...

Ok, as I said earlier, was planning this and a Stuka...but got so inspired by all You guys building the real "Heavy" birds.
So, Went hunting on eBay and managed to bag two Babies on my ever growing (Luftwaffe) list.
(Also paid Eduard a visit)
Today it was Chrismas and these arrived!



Oh...this was also in there, all decent Luft46 kits will eventually find its way to my stash...


But...it was these two I was after.
From the Reviews and builds I have seen both are nice kits.
These are big Aircraft so 1/72 is fine and both build up to nice size models.

This kit, He-177 A-6 is actually the A-5 version with some extra parts. However all the A-5 parts are still there so You can build either version. The A-6 has a Beautiful paint scheme... The "Greif" was a very good and capable bomber Aircraft. But due to teething problems and the crazy LW doctrines who dictated light and medium bombers, it never came into play. (thank God for that)


This is one of my absolute favourite bombers, I Think the Condor is a Beautiful Aircraft with its sleek and for the time very modern design. If You were in the merchant navy during WWII, You feared two things...U-boats and the Condors.
They patrolled the sea hunting for convoys which they bombed and strafed. U-boats tailed the convoy and called in the Condors.
The FW-200 C (in many variants and versions) were designed as long range bombers. They carried a two ton bombload (4000lb) roughly the same as a B17 (on long range missions) and had a 30mm cannon fitted in a gondola for "ship killing" and four 13mm MGs for defence.


Also got masks for them...only way really on models like this. (loooots of glass to mask)
And for two Stukas.



So Stuka out, one of these bad boys in.
Will have to sleep on it...to be continued.

Nice update on the SAAB I see what you mean with the machine gun being a little out of scale.

Some cool kits their I agree the Condor is a really nice looking bird.

Back to the Little SAAB.

Internals base painted.


I invented my own shade of "way back then SwAF interior green", I Think it was Tamiya XF-58 with some XF-66 Light grey.


Painted the instrument panel XF-85 rubber black and used the rest to prime the MG, MG placement, Stick and Shell tube.
(Yes the stick is very long, I re built my own since the kit one was to short and had a strange shape, this will be shortened to lenght)


The canopy...
Have tried to lightly sand, polish..Everything. As I suspected its the quality of the plastic that makes it very foggy.
So have decided to get the vacuum formed efter market one. You get a kit with 2 for 7€ so no biggie.
Not that Your gonna see much in there anyway but still the foggy canopy glass looks bad.

Hmm see now that the pic above on the canopy can be decieving, its shows it when lightly sanded about to be polished and not in its original state....

Nice mancave you have there and a very nice stash of kits I am looking forward to seeing more of your B17

Nice subject you have Patric. I like very much all the SAAB planes. I have this kit that you building right know in the pass but after switching to 1/48 scale I sold my kit. But I will be looking closely on your build. Nice start I hope it end up some cracking looking build.

Hi there Wally, sorry for late reply...Thanks and I will do my very best with this Little bomber.
Yeah, 1/48 and 1/32 are my preferred scales with planes, but some subjects is just available in 1/72 and when You want to build them...well.
Its a very basic kit as expected with short run technology but as Robert wrote in Another thread, with some tender love and caring it builds into a nice Little model.
Robert, if You read this, please post pics of Your Beautiful SAAB 17s in the gallery!!!

Well is kind of a temporary mancave...will rebuild garage this summer and create "the mancave of my Dreams".
Im looking at Pauls workshop as inspiration, now THATS a mancave!
As for stash...well its early on in the madness, steadily growing! (so many kits, so Little time...)

Well, hope it will arrive next week.
Problem with the vacuum formed canopies are, well same as whats makes them good I guess...they are thin!
So one has to be really careful when masking and cutting the tape.

Got the canopy today. Much better than the original and surprisingly clear and quite stiff so cutting masking tape should not be a problem...
(Allthough im NOT looking forward to masking it... )

Looking really good. Interesting to see the vac form canopy, I've not worked with one of those before! Looking forward to seeing how you tackle it

Guys, as I have been out of the loop for a few weeks due to extreme workload and som domestic stuff like being down with flu and car problems (gearbox) etc. So, have to now focus 100% on the Condor, my main entry, to be sure to finish in time.

If possible I will try to finish this as well, but Condor prio 1, and this will be put on hold for now.
