Obligatory sprue shots after making sure it's all there



Doing the washing up, modellers style.



I've learned the hard way that when tipping out the waste water from sprue washing to do it through a sieve in case small plastic parts come off in the wash and go to visit all the ex-goldfish.

Next steps are to go through the instructions several times, mark out the sub-assembly areas and translate Revell's weird mix-a-paint system into Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics.

There's going to be some areas for sure that will push me to get better. particularly the cockpit masking and internal detailing/weathering.

Since for me this is probably the largest build I've done i'll be doing it straight OOB and saving the PE/after market stuff for when I have some confidence.

At 1/32 scale it should be a pretty good size model.

Results of about 2hours work. Found a few gotcha's and points to note in the instructions. I've not done 10 and 11 yet(fix the underside of the fuselage and wing spar to the right side yet) as the underside fit looks a little tenuous to make a neat join at this stage.



The same goes for fitting the seat(12) as I'll need to prime and paint all the cockpit parts before putting them together and I can see the seats just getting in the way



I also jumped a couple of steps to 19 after working out it would be easier to fix the seat onto the frame(from 15 and 16) after fixing the frame to the base(19) as the base as four locating holes that help keep the frame aligned.



I also skipped 20,21,22 and 23 for the moment as it was getting late and far too fiddly. Will need to do those tomorrow, as well as glue the seats to the frames(something which I hate doing as the instructions here don't really make it clear where to fit the frame too)

So moved onto 24-27 and was glad I read the tip about fixing small parts with masking tape before cutting. Some really tiny parts here that would be carpet monster food for sure.



Hoping to finish all the internals construction tomorrow so I can prime and paint with german grey(XF63), some mr hobby Iron and dark iron buffable metaliser and other colours for switches, leather etc etc. Been trying to find some color reference shots as the ones I've seen seem to point to a darker cockpit colour rather than the usual Luftwaffe internal colours on the Me-109's etc.

Then later on in the week it'll be weathering, touching up stuff I missed.

I know it doesn't look like much, but boy some of those parts are small..



So far the fit of the kit has been excellent, and I hope I'm doing this in the optimum order as I really don't fancy trying to paint around all the various cockpit gubbins once they are put into place.

Finished off the remaing cockpit construction step and did a very rough and ready test fit to help me visualise where all the gubbins goes, but also to help me see where and what to paint and when.


In spite of the roughness of the test fit, it does seem to go together well. A little concerned about the positioning of the pilots seat(rudder pedals seem to stick out more than looks right and of where and how the various seats will slot in. But more test fitting showed there should be enough room (fingers crossed)

Looking at how packed the cockpit area is, it brings a new appreciation for the bomber crews who had to fly and fight in these things

While all the gubbins is off drying I took a quick photo of the wings and fuselage with a cocktail stick to show the scale. The box says it's 45.3cm X 57.1cm (that's 17.8 inches by 22.4 inches) so that's a fair sized model.



Decided I'm going to leave the tailwheel off (missing steops 32,33 and 35 off) until after the final painting.


So the plan is, is to do half of 34 then stick that to the fuselage in step 35 and Hopefully I can then insert the wheels assembly #33 afterwards.



The nice thing about this sized model is that the job shouldn't be too fiddly to do at the end and it will save me loads of laborious masking later

Feel free to shout out OMG you're heading for a car(plane?) wreck in the order in which I'm doing things But so far it's making sense and I'm getting a real sense of progress.

Great progress mate! I don't think you'll go far wrong with this, from what I've read it's another 1/32 winner from Revell. That cockpit looks fantastic! I want one!

Im stoked to build all these 1/32 Lufwaffe monsters staring at me from the shelf.
But, they are BIG and I dont have the place right now, so have to wait until the new and improved mancave is ready.

Not a lot of progress today. Something called work gets in the way. I have my new favourite paint now. Mr Metal color Metaliser buffable paint. It sprays right out of the pot and after leaving it a while you can run it down with a finger/cotton bud and produce what I think are amazing effects without all the faffing around with dry brushing.



The darker colour is the Tamiya German green(XF63), and I used iron Mr metal color as it's seems to be a close match to the XF 63.

Got to wait until it's properly dry before adding some more coloring, leather/wood effects etc but so far I'm really pleased with the results

I have the buff ables too and I really like them.

Took a bit of a break from detailing the cockpit while I wait for some new colors and brushes to arrive. So I moved onto the wing, tail and engine assemblies (52--67). The undercarriage steps have been skipped for the moment as I'll do those last.



Prior to fitting the start of the nacelle's I primed and painted in RLM02 the wheel bays as some source material found indicated that this was the usual color. One thing to note, the instructions show part number F78 being sloped side up. I'm not sure that's right because after fitting that part was pressing hard against the wheel base strut(D95). By the time I noticed the glue was dry and it was too late to try the other way. So just check before fitting it properly.

I also found it easier to do step 55, after 57 as it allows test fitting of the ailerons and the levels against the engine shroud(C47/48)

In step 59 I added the air brakes (D81) too early as now i'll have to sand and fill around them. Oh well.


It also shows 2 small pieces (F61, F62) added in front of the ailerons, which seem totally superfluous but I added them anyway. My guess is they helpt positioning them against the wing but it was easy enough. The same goes for parts (c148 and C149) While they do,do something it seem an unnecessary faff to fit them when they could mold the tail differently.

At least in my build the add in wing tips have a slight fit issue. I don't think it's me as all the parts were cleaned and sanded. Still, it's nothing that a little Mr Surfacer/Magic putty wont fix.


It's notable as so far the fit of the kit has been excellent.

Sprayed the engines and exhausts with Mr Metal Dark Iron. I'll weather those later when they're properly dry

Unable to resist I quickly dry fitted the cockpit and wings to see the shape of things.



Some minor gaps and seams to fill and sand, which joy of joy will be tomorrows job. I'd going to sort out the gaps on each wing before fitting them to the fuselage as it's getting a bit big to do all the filling at once. So basically bring completed sub assembles for final fitting



The underside will need more attention, again not sure if it was me or that's just the fit of the kit. But there are seams a plenty.

Not too worried about the seams on the fuselage atm. That's just me sticking it together quickly with frog tape. The main concern will be how well the nose fits together with all the cockpit stuff in but that's another day. We're now entering areas which I'm not that experienced in, namely filling and sanding and cockpit masking so wish me luck.

Been a while. Work and waiting for new paints/tools slowed things down some.

Cockpit details. I tried to get the dark and dingy look I'd seen in reference pictures so stuck with the XF63 for the majority of the interior. For the wood effects (probably cant see them that well when it's altogether I used Tamiya XF78 as a base coat and artists burnt ochre applied with a sponge for the wood effect. First time I've done it, and I'm quite pleased with the results.

Also used the same burnt ochre paint for leather effects, which is something I'd been trying to do for ages


Kinda a shame all that detail was hidden so well, but I know it's there The seats were a pita to fit in, I had to keep test fitting the canopy to make sure they didn't bump up against it. Probably could've done with some better locator holes or guidelines. After this shot was taken I went back and re-fitted the seats so they are nice and straight now.


Got the fuselage's joined together. The fit was pretty good, no major gaps but quite a few seams to take care of

Also masked off all the canopy areas.. What a job that is. Top tip. buy the eduard mask when making this again



Then on went the wings. Again no major fit issues but the wing root gap looked a little large to pass it of as a panel line. So it was out with the filler again..

After a little more masking work, laid down a couple of coats of AK primer, using it to help show up where I'd not quite sanded and filled. Then after it was dried it was out with the Sotar 20/20 and a heavily thinned+retarder XF1 for pre-shading.


In the background you can see the undercarriage, props and the like that have all been constructed and primed. The undercarriage was really fiddly to put together. I just hope it's all at the correct angles etc.


Just a few minor stages to complete out of the construction which can be done post painting.

As you can see, by the size of it next to the A3 Mat it's quite a size..

Really like the wood effect will have to give that ago sometime.

It's been a while. so I thought I'd update with a series of photo's and thoughts ready for the reveal thread later on

Revell's paint scheme. I really wish they would do colour ones like Airfix and other manufacturers.


Lots of masking off for the splinter camouflage. Much easier to use Frog tape than break the bank with Tamiya tape.


I didn't really find a satisfactory match for RLM 70 and 71 as the colours seem really close together. But hopefully it'll come out ok with some post shading. I used Tamiya XF 27 and XF61for the main scheme, with Tamiya rubber black for the wheels as well as XF 23 for the underside.

Decaling was ok, but I have to say Revell's instructions make decaling a real pain as the locations for some of the wing warning lines were hidden by the dark colouring of the scheme. By the time I was done decaling I'd have paid an extra quid for colour instructions.
